Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

 • HTC G1
 • HTC Nexus One
 • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
 • HTC Incredible S
 • Samsung Nexus S
 • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
 • Samsung Galaxy Note
 • Nokia 8
 • BlackBerry KeyOne
 • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

FCC approval appears to confirm Nexus 5 is made by LG – with impressive specs

Site default logo image

The mystery over whether the Nexus 5 is made by LG or Motorola appears to have been solved by FCC approval documents. The documents refer to the handset as the LG ZNFD820, but all the signs point to this being the replacement for the Nexus 4, expected to be launched in the next month or so. Google recently slashed the price of the existing handset, with the 8GB model going out of stock for good.

It appears to match the video grab we caught earlier this week.

Engadget points out that the casing images appear to be an excellent match for the phone which Google apparently inadvertently included in the KitKat promo video that it swiftly withdrew. The specs also look likely for what we expect to be a significant upgrade to the Nexus 4 …

Improved customization for the Moto X is available via AT&T, but Sprint says that it will support Moto Maker in the coming months.

Distancing itself from the other carriers that offer the Moto X, Sprint says that customers that switch to Sprint (and port their phone number) from another carrier will get the phone for $99.

Galaxy Beam 2 with brighter, higher resolution Pico projector coming soon?

Today at IFA 2013, Texas Instruments DLP Products brought out a new version of its tiny Pico projector chipset that boasts “100% higher brightness on a frame-by-frame basis while consuming 50% less power.” It also doubles the resolution as compared to the previous version.

Samsung’s Galaxy Beam is probably the most well-known device taking advantage of this chipset, and we’ve heard that TI’s better version can be making its way to the Galaxy Beam 2 in the coming months.

Here’s the full press release from TI DLP Products:

Texas Instruments DLP® Debuts New DLP Pico™ Chipset Optimized for Ultra-Compact Mobile and Wearable Devices

New Architecture Delivers Greater Brightness and Higher Resolution

BERLIN – September 05, 2013: Today at IFA 2013, Texas Instruments (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) DLP® Products unveiled its newest DLP Pico™ chipset, the 0.2” TRP, which brings unparalleled brightness through greater optical/power efficiency, and higher resolution to next-generation smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and wearable devices, such as near-eye displays.

The 0.2” TRP chipset, the latest in the DLP Pico family, is the first to incorporate the Tilt & Roll Pixel (TRP) architecture announced at CES 2013, as well as the adaptive IntelliBrightTM suite of algorithms demonstrated at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

With the ability to produce up to 100 percent higher brightness on a frame-by-frame basis while consuming up to 50 percent less power, the new 0.2” TRP chipset also features twice the resolution of its predecessor. The result is bright, detailed images with a life-like quality, making DLP Pico the ultimate means of sharing life’s experiences, anytime and anywhere.

“We believe that through the creativity and passion of our customers, the 0.2” TRP chipset will set a completely new benchmark for big picture experiences from mobile devices,” said Frank Moizio, business unit manager of DLP Pico. “We expect their pioneering products to create the most compelling and unique displays, transforming the value of mobile experiences.”

Beyond traditional mobile electronics, DLP Pico is finding applications in emerging technologies like the growing wearables market. As with many wearable devices, the design of near-eye displays presents a unique design challenge, requiring a critical balance of both style and performance. In this arena, DLP Pico excels, as described by Paul Travers, CEO of Vuzix:

“Given the aggressive power and brightness needs of our see-through near-eye display products, the new DLP Pico chipset is a perfect fit,” said Travers. “The combination of unmatched power savings and high contrast lets us deliver consumers longer battery life while creating a brighter, more vibrant image than we would be able to achieve with any other technology.”

World class brands and manufacturers are actively designing products with the new DLP Pico chip. PayPal for Android redesigned, adds ability to pay at local shops

Today, PayPal has announced a significant update to its Android app that is much simpler.

Feature-wise, the app update focuses around mobile payments. With a new “Shop” tab, users of the new PayPal app can find restaurants, shops, and venues that support paying with PayPal. On top of that, some of these shops even support purchasing and paying for food or another item before walking into the store.

As explained to TechCrunch, some of these shops even support coupons. Ordering ahead includes the nice benefit of skipping the line. Another feature that goes nice with the “Shop” feature is the ability to pay a restaurant bill via the app.

A bill-me-later option has also been added. The new update is now available on Google Play.

Hands-on with the new S Pen multitasking features for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 & Note 10.1 2014 Edition (Video)

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG_nkqHhCDA&feature=youtu.be]

With last night’s introduction of the new Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition, both devices got spec bumps, better displays, and a new leather-like textured back– but Samsung isn’t introducing any radical design changes. It’s not exactly surprising– it did the same with the Galaxy S4– and the upgraded specs will only help the company continue the success it’s had with the stylus focused devices. However, the real stand out features of the new Notes come in the way of S Pen features accessible through the new “Air Command” function. The feature pops up a radial menu from just about anywhere when hovering the S Pen and clicking its button, and the menu will let you access a few handy (gimmicky?) new features for multitasking and quickly saving content. Samsung is focusing on the new S Pen features in its ads for Note 3 and new Note 10.1, and we decided to go hands on in the video above to get some first impressions. We quite enjoyed using the new S Window feature to open apps in a sizeable window within another, but some shortcomings with the new multitasking features might make them more gimmicky than a faster alternative to other solutions with third-party apps. You can also quickly access Quick Action memos and Screen Write for annotating screenshots, nice additions to the radial menu but nothing that we couldn’t do with the S Pen previously.

Nook HD and HD+ clearance sale in UK, from £79

If you’re in the UK and have been considering a Nook, it looks like now is the time to buy: Barnes & Noble has cut prices again “while stocks last.”

Prices of the 7-inch Nook HD have been cut by £20, with the 8GB model down to £79 and the 16GB version at £99. The 9-inch HD+ sees a £30 drop to £129 for the 16GB and £149 for the 32GB.

9to5Toys recently had the 16GB HD+ for $110 shipped, but this has now sold out.

The Nook line has always been a loss-maker for Barnes & Noble, and the company said back in June that it was quitting the hardware business. The company then announced a change of plan after new CEO Michael Huseby was installed (not the first time the company has done a U-turn), though it’s not yet known whether the new Nook device expected later this year will be a dedicated ebook reader or another Android tablet.

HTC’s woes continue with arrests and alleged Chinese government conspiracy

Site default logo image

HTC’s former VP of Product Design Thomas Chien (photo: HTC blog)

Taiwanese company HTC has not been having a happy time of late. Senior departures, including its COO; a halving of market share since 2011; former UK execs setting up a rival company; disappointing Q2 financials; and the possibility of the first ever loss in the company’s history in Q3.

But the latest saga in the company’s troubles read more like the plot of a soap opera than real-life. First, several of HTC’s former lead designers were arrested last week on suspicion of fraudulent expenses claims and leaking of trade secrets. Now Engadget reports that one of those arrested, ex-VP of Product Design Thomas Chien, may have been involved in a conspiracy with a Chinese municipal government to use both the trade secrets are purloined cash to create a rival smartphone company in China …

Google apparently slips unannounced Nexus phone in its KitKat video

Site default logo image

Earlier today, Google announced its upcoming Android 4.4 KitKat software update. In tandem with the announcement, Google posted a video that showcases the unveiling of the KitKat statue at the company’s headquarters.

At about 38-39 seconds into the video (embedded below), a Google employee is seen taking photos or video recording the statue with an unknown Nexus device (on the left).

Close-up shot, click for larger

The backplate seems similar to that found on the new Nexus 7, and the camera lens appears to be larger than the current-generation Nexus 4. Speaking of the camera, Google executive Vic Gundotra previously hinted at major advances in the Android camera department:

The unannounced phone also appears larger in size, so perhaps the new device will sport a bigger screen.

The next Nexus phone is rumored to debut in Q4. The video below has been pulled since this report was published, perhaps indicating that this was a true leak.

Here’s a copy of the video:

And here’s the new phone blown up:

Thanks, Michael!

Details and video of Sony’s upcoming QX lens-shaped camera leaked: two versions coming later this month

[youtube=http://youtu.be/HKGEEPIAPys]

Details of the rumored smartphone-compatible, Carl Zeiss lens-weilding camera attachment from Sony, set to be announced tomorrow, have been leaked by sonyalpharumors. The promotional video above shows the features of the QX100/QX10 “lens-style cameras”.

For devices with NFC, a simple tap hooks up the camera/lens and makes it ready to share or save files right on the spot:

For added convenience, the app can be activated using NFC one-touch with compatible devices. Once pictures are taken, they are saved directly on both the phone and the camera*, and can be shared instantly via social media or other common mobile applications.

The device will take advantage of the PlayMemories Mobile app available for iOS and Android devices. The device will come with a piece to attach to a phone, however, it is also detachable as seen in the video.

The QX100 and QX10 will be available some time later this month for $500 and $250, respectively.

KIT KAT posts Android KitKat 4.4 (parody?) video, “The future of confectionary”

[youtube=http://youtu.be/OKOrkLxOBoY]

“A beautifully immersive and multi-sensory experience”

“When we set out to create confectionary perfectionary by designing the perfect chocolate bar, we nailed it the first time.”

The above video was posted to KIT KAT’s YouTube channel and parodies the regular tech product videos by talking about the features of a KitKat® in very geeky ways. Nothing is revealed about the upcoming Android operating system Android 4.4 KitKat, but it seems the partnership / promotion platform between KIT KAT and Google is strong.

Android 4.4 has a name: KitKat

Site default logo image

Google’s SVP of Android, Sundar Pichai just announced over 1 billion Android activations and the name of the next Android operating system on Twitter. Android 4.4 will be named after the Nestlé KitKat bar. A giant “chocolate” Android statue has also appeared alongside the previous Android mascots on Google’s campus.

As far as the changes in Android 4.4, Google says they are trying to “make an amazing Android experience available for everybody,” but so far there’s no indication of what that actually means.

To celebrate, Nestlé and Google have teamed up to giveaway a Nexus 7 and Google Play Store credits in specially-marked Kit Kat bars.

Google reportedly acquired WIMM Labs for its Android smartwatch/wearable platform

Site default logo image

Google has reportedly acquired WIMM Labs, the company that first introduced us to its 1-inch, Android-powered wearable platform back in 2011.WIMM stopped offering its open Developer Kit for its “WIMM One” platform back in the summer of 2012, noting on its website that it had “entered into an exclusive, confidential relationship” for the technology. According to a report from GigaOm, that’s because Google quietly picked up the company last year to help work on its own wearable products:

At the time, some publications speculated that Apple may have snatched up WIMM Labs to bolster its iWatch efforts, but GigaOM has now learned that the buyer actually was Google. The acquisition was facilitated by Woodside Capital Partners, and it looks like a significant part of WIMM’s staff stayed on to join Google. Most of WIMM’s senior staff still list their original company on their Linkedin profile, but a few have updated it with a mention of their new employer.

The news comes just as Samsung is about to introduce its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch product and as rumors of Apple releasing a smartwatch or similar wearable product continue to heat up. According to the report, which Google is yet to confirm, the talent picked up from WIMM is currently working with Google’s Android team. There is no mention of Google working on a smart watch product specifically, and, while the 1-inch WIMM One platform might be best suited to the wrist watch form factor, there is a possibility Google could put the tech towards other wearable products.

Twitter launches Android beta tester program

Following an app update earlier this week to the Twitter mobile apps that introduced a somewhat controversial conversation view in the app’s timeline, Twitter is now making a beta of its app available for those interested in testing out the latest beta. It’s likely not a direct response to the backlash Twitter received with the latest update, but at least those interested in testing out the latest new features and UI changes will have the ability to give feedback prior to the public release of future updates. It’s worth noting that the beta will replace your current Twitter app, rather than installing a separate beta version like some Google’s beta apps, but you can return to the public build at any time.

Facebook and Google do it with a lot of their apps, and now you can download the Twitter for Android Experiment by joining this Google group and signing up to become a tester here.

Samsung Galaxy NX Camera available in the US starting October for $1,599/$1,699 w/lens

Site default logo image

Samsung announced today that the new Galaxy NX camera that it first showed off at a London event back in June will soon become available in the US after landing in the UK this month. Starting October, you’ll be able to pick one up for a hefty $1,599 (body only) or $1,699 with the bundled 18-55mm lens. This is the first time Samsung, or just about any big camera manufacturer, has released a professional mirrorless camera system running a full-blown Android OS. The device follows the more consumer friendly and less expensive compact Samsung Galaxy Camera it introduced last year. To navigate through the Android 4.2.2 UI, the Galaxy NX packs in a 4.8″ HD TFT LCD touchscreen display, 1.6GHz quad core processor with separate image signalling processor, hybrid autofocus, and a 20.3mp sensor. The device will also support 13 interchangeable lenses from the NX line and a brand new 10mm fish eye lens. And what good would an Android camera be without built-in Wifi and LTE capabilities? The Samsung Galaxy NX is definitely an interesting move for Samsung and we plan on bringing you a full review of the device soon.
