Fitbit Charge 5 — When does it come out and what we know so far
Even under its new Google owners, Fitbit isn’t done with fitness trackers. This fall, we’re expecting the company to launch another new tracker in the Fitbit Charge 5. Here’s what we know about when it will come out, what new features it will bring, and more.
Fitbit Charge 5 has a color display
By far, the biggest change coming to the Fitbit Charge 5 is a color display for the fitness tracker. For the past several years, Fitbit has only used a monochrome — black-and-white — display on fitness trackers. The reason for that is that monochrome displays generally eat up less power and are easier to read in direct sunlight.
Fitbit changed its tune regarding those displays starting earlier this year with the debut of its style-focused tracker, the Fitbit Luxe. That wearable uses a .76-inch AMOLED display that has a touchscreen. The panel is generally considered “good enough” for outdoor viewing but clearly struggles by comparison. The display on Charge 5 is largely expected to match that one, and the physical design is clearly inspired by the Luxe as well.
We first leaked the Fitbit Charge 5 as “Morgan,” so we can independently confirm the brand’s plans for a color display.
As for what sensors and features the Charge 5 might bring, a standard package is likely on the table. That means step tracking, heart rate data, sleep tracking, and workouts too.
When will Fitbit Charge 5 come out?
As for when we’re expecting the Fitbit Charge 5 to come out, it’s a little tough to say at this point. The one bit of evidence available in the date shown on recently leaked renders which show October 23. This exact date is unlikely since it’s a Saturday, but it might be in the same ballpark as what Fitbit is planning.
Another way we might be able to figure out the release date is by looking at historical Fitbit launches. The Fitbit Charge 4 was released in April, as was the Luxe a year later. It’s unlikely, though, that the company would wait so long to debut this wearable. Rather, a better place to look might be the Fitbit Sense and Versa 3, which debuted in September 2020. That seems like a very reasonable timeline to expect the Fitbit Charge 5 to make its debut, but as should be clear at this point, an exact release date is hard to determine.
What price will Fitbit Charge 5 have?
As for pricing, the Fitbit Charge 5 will likely be one of the more expensive trackers the brand offers up. Where the Inspire 2 costs just $99, the Charge lineup usually starts around $150. That’s the price the Fitbit Charge 4 launched at, but the product has since been discounted to just $130.
