HTC 10

After two years of average flagships, HTC finally delivered for 2016 with the HTC 10. We praised the device in our review, as did most publications and buyers, but that hasn’t quite done the trick. HTC has apparently had a bit of trouble selling the 10 as shown by T-Mobile. Just two months after the device went on sale, T-Mobile had already dropped the device from its smartphone offerings.

The HTC 10 has been frequently discounted since its release, at least on the unlocked model. These discounts usually came as $100 discounts direct through HTC, and now the company is offering that deal yet again, but with an extra perk.

According to a report by TrendForce analyst Avril Wu, the total production volume of HTC’s flagship HTC 10 will hover around 1 million units, with an overall yearly production volume of just 13 million units. That figure is significantly less than last year’s yearly production mark of 18 million units, even with the assistance of an upcoming Google Nexus branded HTC smartphone for the second half of 2016.

Last week, Spigen sent over a few cases for the recently released HTC 10. That was great news for me, as I’ve been extremely hesitant to use the device as my daily driver without some sort of protection.

And it seems as if HTC’s downward spiral continues. The latest in its seemingly never-ending doomsday news cycle comes today in the form of a pair of reports from Focus Taiwan, with the former suggesting that the lower-specced HTC 10 has been an absolute flop in China and the latter saying that the company has formed a completely separate company for its VR ambitions…

Earlier this week we brought you news that Google engineer, Benson Leung suggested quite strongly that the LG G5 and HTC 10 (and any other device using Quick-Charge technology and a Type-C connector) was technically not compliant with USB Type-C specification. Because of the way Quick-Charge 2.0 and 3.0 delivers the charge, it restricts some of USB Type-C’s functions by taking up the data lines.

While we’re yet to hear any kind of response from LG or HTC, Qualcomm has (sort of) answered the criticism by half suggesting it’s up to manufacturers to choose how they implement the technology, and that there have been no complaints so far from customers.

You may remember the name Benson Leung from when the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X launched at the end of 2015. At the time, he set out to review as many Type C chargers and adapters available on Amazon to separate the true Type C compliant accessories from the non-compliant, helping buyers avoid purchasing products that might damage their new Nexus phone (or Pixel C).

Following his most recent review (via AP), the Google engineer has pointed to a previous Type C spec explainer to suggest that both the HTC 10 and LG G5 are out of spec.
