With first impressions on the table, we’re already pretty impressed with what LG has done with LG G6. The bezel-light flagship brings a lot of impressive aspects to LG’s primary lineup, and clearly, interest in the device is pretty strong. Roundup: Best deals on last year’s Android flagships

Now that Samsung, LG, Sony and Alcatel have announced their flagship phones for 2016, its competition won’t be far behind. HTC is expected to announce the One M10 soon and Huawei will unveil the P9. While new phones are exciting, perhaps even better news is that last year’s best phones are now available at lower prices, and they’re still great smartphones.

Opinion: LG G5 needs great software if it’s going to be a market-leading smartphone

LG is a manufacturer capable of making brilliant hardware and well-considered smartphone designs. The LG G2 had impossibly thin bezels, unlike anything else on the market when it launched. Likewise, the G3 was the first mainstream smartphone to feature a Quad HD display. The G4 added to that with one of the best cameras we’ve ever seen on an Android phone and it gave us the option of really attractive, comfortable leather back panels.

Cyanogen’s CM13 nightlies bring Android Marshmallow to LG G4, Moto X (2014), OnePlus One, more

The CyanogenMod team announced in a blog post this morning that it has started pushing its Android Marshmallow-based CM13 nightlies to a handful of older Android phones. It does note, however, that if you’re currently using YOG4P orYOG7D builds of CM12.1 and are happy with its stability, you may want to give the CM13 nightly a miss. A nightly — for those who are unaware — is essentially a beta custom ROM build that CyanogenMod pushes out to its users.

LG announces mobile payment service to compete with Apple, Google and Samsung

The mobile payments industry is getting more crowded by the month. Early this morning, LG confirmed on its Facebook page that it will be entering the market with LG Pay, and has signed up a couple of Korean partners to do so. The company has joined forces with Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card in its home country, but didn’t say when the service is going live, or when it’ll expand to international markets.

The service will work on most LG phones, new or old. Although the company has been light on detail, we’re assuming that means those with built in NFC. Although, conceivably, it could be like Samsung Pay in that it works with both contactless NFC card readers as well as traditional Magstrip ones. Like Samsung and Apple, the service will only work on its own devices and isn’t cross-platform or cross-manufacturer.

Although we’re not surprised that LG has decided to follow in the example of Sammy, it’s still bemusing that any Android OEM should seek to release their own payment system when Android Pay is already here and will eventually work on most devices as long as they have an NFC antenna.

We’re skeptical of LG’s chances of success in a crowded market, but you can be sure that — in the future — LG’s mobile payment app will become yet another piece of bloatware to add to an already bursting collection of unnecessary duplicate apps and services.

Android Marshmallow stock ROM appears for LG G4 as OTA rollout delayed

LG said earlier this month that Android Marshmallow is coming to the G4 soon (possibly quicker than pretty much every other non-Nexus smartphone), but a new post by the Korean company on its Poland Facebook page says that the update have been “temporarily suspended” due to technical issues (via AndroidBeat):

Nicolas, update is temporarily suspended due to technical reasons. We will keep you informed about the changes!

LG G4 owners getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow update from next week

When it comes to Android smartphones running manufacturer skins on top, the wait for the latest software updates can be excruciating, especially if you have a carrier-locked version. This year, LG’s seeking to change that it seems. The Android OEM announced via press release this morning that customers with the LG G4 will start seeing Android Marshmallow updates land from next week…

Roundup: 5 of the best discounted flagship Android phones

With several companies having recently announced brand new flagship phones in time for the holiday season, you may be tempted to go all out and get the latest, biggest and best phones available. Samsung released the Galaxy S6 Edge plus and Note 5, LG announced the V10, and Google’s Nexus range got an update. But, with those new, shiny phones out at full price comes the depreciation of slightly less shiny and new phones which are still very much flagships in their own right.

We’ve rounded up some of this year’s flagships, all of which have seen discounts (some more generous than others) with the arrival of the newest devices…

Specifications compared: LG V10 vs. LG G4

Last night, LG sent out a press release detailing its next flagship smartphone and teased its 2nd-generation Urbane watch. Today, at an event in New York, LG gave a more detailed first look to a select group of press folk. In so many ways, I can’t help but feel the LG V10 is the phone the LG G4 could have been. With so many flagship phones being equipped with fingerprint sensors and durable metal frames, the G4 has been a little out of place.

Now that the V10 has been outed, we can take a look at how its spec sheet compares to its little brother…

Nexus 6P camera among the best, according to DxOMark

Google wasn’t shy about telling us how great it thinks its new Nexus cameras are in its product unveiling yesterday. Both the new Nexus 5X and 6P use a 12.3MP Sony sensor with pixels so big, they didn’t need to add OIS. And while we should take Google’s word with a pinch of salt, the camera testers over at DxOMark pretty much agree with them…

LG G4 Pro spotted on GFXBench, features 5.7-inch QHD display and 4GB RAM

We’ve heard a number of rumors concerning upcoming LG devices over the past few weeks and months. All together, we’re not entirely clear on what LG has in store for us for the holiday quarter. Whether it’s a budget phablet with a stylus, a ‘V10’ with a secondary ticker display or the LG Class which was officially announced recently, the Korean tech company’s wares have leaked so much it’s confusing.
