Nexus 6P

See All Stories

From a design standpoint, this is the most premium-looking Nexus we’ve seen since the original Nexus One all those years ago. Huawei’s taste for metal unibody phones shines through, with a phone that looks incredibly elegant despite its obvious large size. The aluminum chassis will come with a choice four different anodized finishes: Aluminum, Gprahite, Frost, and a Japan-exlusive gold. The only part which isn’t metal on the back is the slightly protruding camera hump. The phone measures in at just 7.3mm thin, 77.8mm wide and 159.4mm tall, making it smaller in every dimension than the current Nexus 6.

The 12.3MP rear camera is housed in a large pill-shaped glass panel along with a dual-LED flash. It’s also equipped with optical image stabilization and 4K video recording, along with an f/2.0 aperture to ensure low light pictures look as good as they can from a sensor this small. It also has pixels much bigger than standard smartphone cameras and can take 30fps bursts of photos to help create cool GIFs and choose the best pictures.

Amazon now officially sells the Nexus 6P, offering 64 GB model for $499

ah-huawei-nexus-6p-render-7-jpg-1200c397972-2015-09-27-16-52-02

While the Nexus 6P has been listed on Amazon for quite some time, it was only available through third-party sellers until today. The phone’s availability is currently rolling out now as sold by Amazon itself, and while the 32 GB and 128 GB models are not yet available (at the time of this writing, at least), the 64 GB model is currently listed at $499, which matches the current price on the Google Store.

The Nexus 6P’s availability has been broadening as of late, most recently becoming available at Best Buy as we told you would happen. The gold “Special Edition” model has also become available in India through FlipKart, and we expect that availability of that version will spread to the United States soon. In other related news, you would be foolish not to pick up the 32GB Nexus 6 at $250 via Amazon.

Now, the flagship Nexus 6P has also seen a price drop.  You can now snag the smartphone with $50 discount in the US or Japan, direct from Google’s online store.

Nexus Studio Event: how Google’s 5X and 6P were created and more

open_studio

[Ed. Note: This is a rewrite of the original post which was the result of a miscommunication between editor and writer on coverage of an excellent Reddit writeup of an event. Apologies for the mistake]

Last week, Google hosted a Nexus Studio event open to the public in New York City. For three days, many teams that helped build the latest generation of Nexus phones were on hand giving talks and answering questions about the Nexus 5X and 6P. These included representatives from the Nexus industrial design, hardware, and engineering teams, Nexus software product managers, and the Android UX design team, among many others.

One Reddit user wrote up a very detailed post about all the things he learned from the “super friendly and surprisingly open” Google employees on hand. Below is a summary of the interesting information gleamed from numerous talks…

Google to soon begin selling Nexus 6P via Best Buy, offer the gold variant in the United States

ah-huawei-nexus-6p-render-7-jpg-1200c397972-2015-09-27-16-52-02

Before the Nexus 6P launched, it seemed — thanks to some early render leaks — that four different colors of the phone were going to be available for consumers. Come the Nexus event in September, only three colors (Aluminium, Graphite, or Frost) were available in most regions, with only Japan announced to be getting access to the last “Special Edition” gold variant. According to people familiar with the matter, the company is planning to soon begin selling the Nexus 6P via Best Buy, and finally launch the gold variant in the United States after only just recently making it available to Japanese customers through cellular carrier SoftBank…

Opinion: LG V10 is a dual-screened, tri-camera beast of a phone, but is that what you want?

lg v10

I used a Nexus 5X throughout most of October (and was very frustrated with it), but earlier this week the LG V10 showed up at my doorstep — and I just had to give it a shot for a couple weeks. Although my opinion may be skewed thanks to my less than joyful experience with the 5X, I actually found the LG V10 to be a contender for best handset I’ve used this year. It’s huge and heavy, yes, but at least for me, it’s more than feature-complete enough. And it’s especially great when you ditch LG’s software…

Nexus 6P owners on Australian Telstra now receiving OTA fix for 4G issues

ah-huawei-nexus-6p-render-7-jpg-1200c397972-2015-09-27-16-52-02

Owners of the recently-released Nexus 6P on Australian carrier Telstra have been complaining of sporadic 4G issues since the phone first launched, and now it appears (via Ausdroid) that these users are receiving an OTA update to fix these issues.

The update comes in at a solid 71.1 MB and specifically mentions improving “4G network connectivity for your Nexus 6P.” The build number is MMB29N, and the Android security patch level is still at November 1, 2015. Reports from Twitter suggest that the problems are indeed resolved.

You can download the OTA update directly from Google’s servers by clicking the link below, and info on how to install it can be found in our guide.

Google engineer warning: Don’t use OnePlus’ Type-C connectors with your Nexus 5X/6P

oneplus-type-c

Recently we brought you news that a Google engineer named Benson Leung was testing a bunch of USB Type-C cables and reviewing them on Amazon, so that you didn’t have to and risk ruining your brand new Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P or Chromebook Pixel. Just yesterday, Leung specifically called out OnePlus on his public G+ profile to shame the company on its use of outdated tech which isn’t just old, but could end up damaging people’s devices. In short: If you have a Nexus 6P, 5X or Chromebook Pixel, you couldn’t buy any of OnePlus’ Type C connectors to charge or connect them…

Google expands its Nexus Protect warranty program to Canada

nexus-protect

Google’s AppleCare-like warranty protection program Nexus Protect is now available in Canada. The company announced the expansion in a post on Google+ more than a month after the program launched in the United States alongside the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X.

Nexus Protect, for those unfamiliar, offers an additional year of coverage for mechanical breakdowns within your Nexus phone, as well as two years of protection from accidental damage like water damage and shattered displays. Google touts that, after you file a claim and it is approved, you’ll receive your replacement device as soon as the next business day, with shipping both ways covered. Nexus Protect coverage is attached to the phone itself, so if you switch carriers or give the phone to someone else, the coverage stays with it.

Nexus Protect runs $69 for the Nexus 5X and $89 for the Nexus 6P. It’s also important to note that claims are subject to a $79 deductible and that Nexus Protect only covers 2 incidents of accidental damage every two-years.

If you reside in Canada, you can find out more about Nexus Protect on Google’s webpage for the program here.

How to: Train your Nexus 5X/6P to recognize your finger even when you miss [Video]

Using Nexus Imprint with other parts of your finger - YouTube 2015-11-09 09-37-14

I’ve had a Nexus 5X for just a few days, and one of the biggest things I love about this phone is the addition of Nexus Imprint. I like to keep my phone secure, but I really don’t like having to type a password every time I unlock (because, well, I unlock my phone dozens if not hundreds of times per day). But something I quickly noticed with Nexus Imprint on the 5X — especially since I have fingers big enough for a 6P — is that I simply miss the sensor far too often. I commonly find myself overshooting, sometimes even tapping on the camera since that’s about the distance my finger naturally lands.

So how did I fix this? Well, it turns out that it’s actually pretty simple. Thanks to the fact that you can register up to five different fingerprints in the Nexus Imprint settings, you can make your sensor almost impossible to miss. Instead of adding five different fingers, I decided to try adding five different parts of my right index finger…

Nexus 6P’s ‘visor’ back camera glass is spontaneously cracking for some users

3GIJfs3

via <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3rwc6p/nexus_6p_back_glass_window_has_just_spontaneously/cwryfvl">Reddit</a>

It seems like smartphones can’t be released anymore without some kind of serious flaw popping up.

Nexus 6P owners are reporting that the glass panel covering the phone’s cameras are suddenly cracking, with one user reporting having left the device screen up on a table followed by a loud, spontaneous, “snap”. Picking up the device they found the glass cracked and a pile of glass shavings left on the table. Among two users who shared images, the damage looks remarkably similar…

Review: Google’s Nexus 6P is a solid smartphone worthy of your money [Video]

nexus-lead

This year Google decided to change things up a bit and release not one, but two new Nexus devices, with different builds, and different price points to satisfy a wider range of people. So there’s the LG-made Nexus 5X that starts at $379, which I recently reviewed, and then we have the Huawei-made Nexus 6P that starts at $499. These two options aren’t very far apart in terms of pricing, but the difference between them is pretty significant in a few areas…

Nexus 6P gets a 2nd bend test, practically snaps in half right out of the box [Video]

nexus-6p-bend

Last week we shared a video with you produced by YouTube channel JerryRigEverything. In it, Jerry subjected his Nexus 6P to a bunch of durability tests before trying to bend it. The phone wasn’t very scratch or heat resistant, and even less bend resistant.

At the time, we were skeptical of how ‘bendy’ the Nexus really was. Having already suffered some serious damage, including a cracked screen, we thought the Nexus 6P‘s durability was already severely compromised even before the bend test was attempted. We weren’t the only ones to think that way either, so Jerry’s back with another video. This time, he didn’t do any of the durability testing and tried to bend the phone immediately after unboxing it and setting it up….

Nexus 6P buyers get $50 discount on Huawei Watch

nexus-6p-huawei-watch-deal

Huawei has taken a leaf from Apple’s book with its latest promotion, offering discount on its wearable product when customers order a smartphone. Buyers who order the Nexus 6P direct from Huawei can get $50 off the Huawei Watch when they buy both devices at the same time. That means you’ll be able to get one of this year’s best Android Wear smartwatches for as little as $299.

This deal, of course, is more than likely being launched to counter Apple’s very similar promotion in which customers purchasing an iPhone and an Apple Watch at the same time receive $50 discount in select stores. Overall though, there’s still a huge price difference between buying the new Nexus and buying the new iPhone. Nexus 6P models start at $499, where the iPhone 6s begins at $649. Huawei Watch begins at the same price as the Apple Watch Sport, and is $200+ cheaper than the stainless Apple Watch models.

If you want to take advantage of the deal, head on over to GetHuawei.com and add the Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch to your basket. The $50 discount will be applied automatically. All in, the cheapest combination will set you back about $800, that’s only $50 more than the price of the cheapest 16GB iPhone 6s Plus on its own. That’s really not bad when you’re getting two of the best Android/Android Wear products available right now.

Google’s new Nexus 6P buckles in hands-on bend test, fails at durability [Video]

nexus-6p-bends

There’s nothing like a little controversy when a new smartphone is launched to get people debating online. Whether that’s an iPhone that scratches or bends too easily, or a stylus that gets jammed inside a phone when placed the wrong way around. The Nexus 6P is the latest pure Android phone from Google, and is about to come under some new scrutiny from prospective buyers thanks to a video from Jerry Rig Everything on YouTube

Nexus 6P teardown reveals that the attractive flagship is extremely difficult to repair

JwWa5bYsFBq2YJU3

There are plenty of different comparison points between this year’s Nexus phones, and in most of them the Nexus 6P is simply superior. The Nexus 6P has a larger screen, a more premium build, a better camera, and more powerful internals. But there’s one area that we now know that the Nexus 6P is clearly the loser. When it comes to repairability, the Nexus 6P is one of the worst phones ever, getting a score of just 2 out of 10 from iFixit…
