Motorola announced a handful of new devices at an event just last month. The now Lenovo-owned company unveiled the new Moto G and two versions of the Moto X: Play and Style (or Pure). The Moto X Play is Motorola’s attempt at bringing a competitively-priced phone to the market with near-flagship specifications. For just under £280 in the UK you get a device with a full HD (1080 x 1920) 5.5-inch display, an octa-core processor and a gigantic 3,630mAh battery. It’s water-repellent, has a 21MP camera and — best of all — runs an almost vanilla version of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

With Samsung’s most recent device launches being surprisingly restrained, you could almost be forgiven for thinking the company didn’t care so much about the showmanship of releasing high-specced products with ridiculous features anymore. Case in point being the elegant and well-made Galaxy S6 and Note 5 phones. No longer are they smartphones packed with eye-watering feature lists, or a slew of gimmicky features no one needs. But that doesn’t mean the company is completely giving up on trying new, interesting things. At least, not if a recent rumor from SamMobile is anything to go by.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 announced, and it’s ridiculously thin

This morning in Seoul, Korea, Samsung announced its latest Galaxy Tab, and it’s ludicrously thin. Both models of Samsung’s metal-framed Galaxy Tab S2 measure in at just 5.6mm thin and feature either a 9.7-inch or 8.0-inch, 2084×1536 resolution Super AMOLED screen. The S2 will be available to buy across the globe from August.

Other specifications include an 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front-facing camera and an octacore processor made up of a 1.9GHz quad-core and a 1.3GHz quad-core chip. The Tab S2 will ship with a fingerprint sensor built-in, 3GB RAM and either 32GB or 64GB inbuilt storage, expandable up to an extra 128GB. If you go with the larger 9.7-inch model, you’ll get a 5,870mAh battery while the 8-inch has a 4,000mAh cell. There will be LTE and Wi-Fi only models available at launch.

Steve Hemmerstoffer, otherwise known as the infamous @OnLeaks on Twitter, has posted some new images online (translated URL) that purportedly show an updated 2015 Moto G, the budget smartphone from Motorola that comes in just above the really-budget Moto E. Hemmerstoffer is well known for having leaked accurate renders of the LG G4 months before it was unveiled by the company, and has as of late posted renders of new Samsung Note and Galaxy Tab S iterations.

AT&T’s Galaxy Tab S 8.4 receiving OTA update to 5.0 Lollipop

Another day, another OTA update for a Samsung tablet. Today it’s the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 on AT&T, which is receiving a bump to Lollipop (hurrah!). The update is to 5.0.2, not a more stable version like 5.1.1, but be grateful that you’re at least getting all the goodness that comes with Lollipop.

This information is courtesy of a support page on AT&T’s website, which also says that the size of the update is over 1.1GB, so you’re going to need at least that much space available to download and install it.

As per usual, updates delivered by the major carriers tend to have notoriously slow roll-outs – waiting a week or more to see it come down on your device is totally normal. To check if it’s been pulled down to your device, open the Settings app, find “About device,” then tap “System updates.”

As first reported by Android Police and listed on a Samsung support page for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, it seems that Verizon’s variant of the tablet is now receiving an OTA update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

The software version for the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 becomes T707VVRU1BOD4, and to check if the Lollipop update has reached your device you need to open your Settings app and select About device.

We would’ve hoped this update would be to 5.1.1, as earlier 5.0 versions have been known to cause a bevy of problems for many devices, but alas we can only hope that Samsung did extensive enough testing to fish out any significant problems.

Update (Verizon): If this page on Samsung’s support website is to be believed, 5.0.2 should soon begin rolling out to users of Verizon’s Galaxy Tab S 10.5 as well. The page includes no additional info on the update, like download size or enhancements beyond those included in Lollipop itself, save for the date released (5/20/2015) and the software version number (T807VVRU1BOD2).

Update 2 (Sprint): Now the changelog for Sprint’s variant of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 has been updated to reflect an upgrade to 5.0.2 as well, so it should be rolling out soon. Separate from the enhancements and bug fixes included in 5.0 Lollipop and those added by Sprint, this update also removes the Lumen Toolbar which most Sprint users consider to be crapware.

Update 3 (US Cellular): And now we have the changelog for U.S. Cellular’s variant of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, so 5.0.2 should be going out over air for those devices soon. The description includes nothing more than the list of enhancements and bug fixes that are included in standard 5.0.2 Lollipop. The release date is listed as today and the software version number is T807R4TYUBOE5.

Owners of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 on T-Mobile’s network may fret no more. If you haven’t already, you should soon see an over-the-air update come to your device updating it to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

The device has up until now run Android 4.4 KitKat, with the AT&T model receiving an OTA update to Lollipop last week and the WiFi variant having received it back in March. It would be nice if this update would have been to a newer, more stable version of Lollipop like 5.1.1, as earlier versions including 5.0.2 have been known to cause a bevy of problems for many devices.

But alas, as the picture above shows, the update bumps the software version of the T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S to T807TUVU1BOE1. The full download comes in at a whopping 1.1 GB.

T-Mobile hits back at Verizon’s ‘Never settle’ ads, offers free try-out & switch deal

T-Mobile is hitting back at Verizon’s ‘Never settle’ ad campaign, offering to lend Verizon customers a new smartphone and port their existing number to it for a 14-day trial. If customers prefer T-Mobile’s service, the company will pay off Verizon’s Early Termination Fees up to a maximum of $650.

Any outstanding payments on your phone are also paid off, within the same overall limit, when customers choose to trade in their old phone for a new one on T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plan.

T-Mobile promises you won’t lose out if you choose to stay with Verizon. You always retain your existing phone, the carrier will refund any fees incurred on its own network and will pay any costs for switching back to Verizon.

The offer opens on 13th May, running until the end of the month. Visit t-mobile.com or one of the company’s retail stores between those dates for details. The company introduced crowd-sourced coverage maps back in March.

Verizon finally offers Nexus 6 starting tomorrow – almost a half year late

Remember the Nexus 6 launch waaaay back before the holiday shopping season last year? That’s when everyone except Verizon started carrying the Nexus 6 in the US. Shamefully, today, they are officially launching the phone almost 6 months after it launched on its competitors. It will be available to buy (After lots of rumors and delays) starting tomorrow and in Verizon Stores on March 19th for $250 on a 2 year Verizon plan or$27.08/month x24 on Verizon Edge (ouch – comparatively the $650 iPhone 6 is $199 subsidized).

A small bonus, it will ship with Android 5.1 and will come with 6 months of Google Play All Access – which will expire right about the time the next Nexus phone is launched. Verizon clearly has some catching up to do in the area of keeping modern and playing fair.

People have purchased the Nexus 6 from Google Play or other venues for $650 have had no issues putting in a Verizon SIM and at a $250 subsidized price, there is no reason to stop now. There is certainly some very bad blood between Google and Verizon – perhaps related to the latter’s MVNO ambitions. Verizon and Motorola continue to be good partners on their Droid lineup.

When you hear the word Droid, you probably think of two things: Star Wars and Android. While both items are a correct association, the latter comes with a bit of a twist. Armed with a licensing agreement with Lucasfilm, Verizon launched the Motorola Droid in the fall of 2009. To make a long story short; the device went on to become one of the first commercially successful Android smartphones, but with one small carryover. Verizon ran a very aggressive, but highly successful marketing campaign for the Motorola Droid and as a result, casual tech consumers started referring to Android phones and tablets as “Droids.”

Up until now, Verizon has typically released a few Droid-branded phones each year. But here we are at the end of 2014 and its hardware partner Motorola Mobility has been busy working on its own smartphones like the Moto X, which recently launched across multiple wireless carriers, including Verizon. With the exception of a questionable camera and a few small quirks, the former Google company’s flagship handset is truly sublime. So when Big Red and Motorola announced the Droid Turbo, we saw a device that looked to right some of the Moto X’s wrongs, at least on paper. However, is it really enough to lure us away from the phone that made us feel all warm and fuzzy just two short months ago?

Verizon debuts its LTE-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 starting at $499 w/ contract

Galaxy-Tab_N000046_1024-x-640Verizon announced today that its 4G LTE version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S 10.5 tablet is now available for purchase online and in-stores. Verizon also says its variant carries some capabilities unique to the carrier.

Messaging apps are another way to make tablets a more versatile tool. Verizon Messages lets you text from your tablet without having to use your smartphone. You can read a digital magazine on Papergarden and text friends about it instead of reading on one device and texting on the other.

Samsung first announced the latest generation tablet earlier this year in June, and various LTE versions have begun to roll out recently. Verizon’s LTE model starts at $599.99, and customers can pick it up for $499.99 for a two-year contract for a limited time, according to the carrier. Otherwise, users can add the LTE-equipped tablet to More Everything plans for $10/month after purchasing the Galaxy Tab S 10.5.

Granted that isn’t Samsung’s official reason for launching the ruggedized version of the Galaxy Tab, which is both water and dust resistant, and protected against 1.2 metre drops. Samsung says that the Galaxy Tab Active is likely to appeal to business users who need to use tablets in places like construction sites and transport depots.

Along with the protective casing, the device has what is described as a tougher C-Pen stylus. You might wonder how many Galaxy Tab variants are needed, but the company says that it consulted with Fortune 500 companies to determine what was needed from a professional tablet …

Samsung is awfully proud of its Galaxy Tab S’ high-resolution Super AMOLED display and in an effort to get more eyes looking at its new tablet’s 2,560 x 1,600 screen, the company is partnering with Lionsgate to debut the first official trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ahead of its online release. The trailer will be shown first on July 25th during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Fans unable to attend the show can see the preview at Samsung Experience Shops at Best Buys nationwide from July 26th – 27th.

While the iPad is Samsung’s usual target in Galaxy ads comparing its devices to the competition, to really show how great the new Samsung Galaxy S tab display the company put it up against one of its own LCD screens. Samsung just posted its latest TV commercial for the device (above) that it says shows off the “finer visions and truer colors” of the Tab S.

It’s not exacty a glowing recommendation for its tablets that use LCD displays, but it’s certainly a good look at what the Tab S display has to offer. You can check out our hands-on with the Galaxy Tab S here.
