LG G4 spotted on GFXBench, curiously packs a Snapdragon 808

onleaks-onleaks-twitter-2015-03-10-11-01-38

The LG G4 was (purportedly) seen in some leaked renders earlier this month, but today the upcoming handset from LG seems to have made its way through benchmarking software for the first time. As usual, GFXBench seems to be the culprit in this leak, revealing many of the upcoming device’s specs—and interestingly, the phone might be going with the Snapdragon 808 system-on-a-chip.

Samsung Galaxy S6 gets dunked and brutally beaten, comes out mostly unharmed (Videos)

Samsung water resistance

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Water Test - Secretly Waterproof:Resistant? - YouTube 2015-03-30 08-39-41

Every time a new flagship smartphone comes out, YouTube reviewers and testers like to push them to the limit and see how far they can go when brutally tortured—for science, of course. And now that the Galaxy S6 is landing in the hands of some buyers, these tests are finally starting to hit the internet. One YouTuber tests the phone’s waterproof abilities despite it no longer technically being waterproof, and another just absolutely smashes the phone on the ground to see what happens…

Upcoming HTC One E9+ handset gets official in China, no word yet on the E9

At this point we’ve had several looks at HTC’s upcoming One E9+ handset, and—whether it intended to or not—the company has now quietly made the device official via its Chinese website. We saw the first leaks of the phone earlier this month via Chinese regulators, and then saw more images surface by way of famed phone leaker Upleaks. Most recently, Upleaks showed us renders that look almost identical to the ones now seen on HTC’s own website…

Latest leaked renders give us a full-body view of the HTC One M9+

CBKsxaBUIAABxuM

We’ve been seeing a lot of leaked detaills about the HTC One E9 and (E9+) roll out lately, but now we’re getting yet another look at a phone being referred to as the HTC One M9+. HTC sent out invites for an April 8th event depicting a device that hasn’t been officially announced (which is assumed to be this “plus” version of the HTC One M9), but now Upleaks has come out with some new renders of the upcoming smartphone.

OnePlus apologizes for missing deadline on Oxygen OS, says CM12 coming ‘as soon as possible’

181707-oneplusonefull

OnePlus missed its March 27th goal for bringing its new Oxygen OS to the public today, and the company has now taken to its forum to apologize. It’s not exactly surprising to see this happen as OnePlus definitely hasn’t been known for being the most reliable deliverer of software, but it’s unfortunate nonetheless.

YouTube experimenting with 4K at 60 FPS, and you can watch a few demo videos now

How Paintballs Are Made at G.I. Sportz - YouTube 2015-03-27 10-45-36

YouTube has been beefing up the capabilities of its video player for quite some time now, and it first introduced 60 FPS support in June of last year. Now, some videos on the site seem to be able to play back not just at 60 FPS, but at 60 FPS in super high-def 4K resolution. It looks to be an experiment that Google is slowly introducing, as only a handful of hand picked videos are capable of this at the moment…

OnePlus says that its new product is a drone called the DR-1

vAb16Vk

It’s not exactly clear whether or not this is all a big joke, but Carl Pei, the founder of OnePlus, came out on Reddit yesterday in an AMA to say outright that its mysterious upcoming product release is going to be a drone. The company has been teasing this new product for a while, assuring us that it’s not a tablet nor a smartwatch, but recent teases seemed to point more toward some kind of gaming system.

Nexus Player now available in the UK, new accessories land in Google Store

Amazon accidentally revealed earlier this week that this would be happening today, but we now have proof that the slip was legit: the Nexus Player has now launched on the Google Store in the UK for £79. A couple of new Android Wear accessories have also landed in the store today though, including a Sony SmartWatch 3 watch band and a standalone charger for the Asus ZenWatch.

Sprint announces HTC One M9 and Galaxy S6 preorders begin March 27

T-Mobile and AT&T both announced today that preorders for the HTC One M9 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 will begin tomorrow, and now Sprint has come out to do the same. It seems as if each carrier is using a different tactic to get you to go with their service (what’s new?), and Sprint’s method will be to offer a lease of the Samsung Galaxy S6 for completely free for those willing to sign up for the Sprint Unlimited Plus plan.

Google releases new ‘Cloud Console’ app for mobile Google Cloud Platform management

HP2FPOZ9CQGavcuR2yT5VmOqXFKKnSMs1vHTg6K7M5HptI9pVDAxpUPsgs-0DtsYT4E=w300-rw (300×300) 2015-03-25 11-11-07

Google has today released a new app called “Cloud Console” in beta, and it brings a convenient mobile management console to those who have solutions running on Google’s Cloud Platform.

Among the app’s highlighted features, you’ll find the ability to check the status of Google App Engine and Compute Engine resources, create custom dashboards to get a “glanceable overview” of your solutions, take action from your mobile handset like stopping virtual machines, and view and manage incidents in Google Cloud monitoring.

Here’s the official description:

The Cloud Console enables you to manage your solution running on the Google Cloud Platform directly from your Android phone or tablet:

* Check the state of your Google App Engine or Compute Engine resources
* Create your own custom dashboard to get a glanceable overview of your solution
* Take quick actions directly from your device such as stopping a virtual machine
* View and manage Incidents tracked in Google Cloud monitoring

We plan on shipping new features regularly. Please give us your feedback in the app by swiping from the left and tapping “Send feedback”.

You can get the app for free on the Play Store.

Update: The app has now been officially announced:

Imagine being away from your desk and receiving automatic alerts when an issue occurs in your Google App Engine app. Or waiting at the airport and stopping your test VMs before leaving for vacation. With the beta launch of Cloud Console for Android, managing Google Cloud Platform from your phone or tablet is possible (and yes, an iOS version is in the works).

Invites for April 8 HTC event go out to Chinese media, probably for ‘HTC One M9+’ announcement

HTC-One-M9-Plus-date-Sortie

Invites for an HTC event taking place in Beijing on April 8th, 2015 have reportedly been sent out to the Chinese media (via Nowwhereelse.fr). As you can see, the device shown on the image above is a bit different than the HTC One M9—it has a dual-camera set up and a circular main camera, rather than the single, rectangular shooter on the back of the new flagship. The render does look similar to the regular One M9 in some ways though, showing what looks to be the same dual-tone finish. In all likelihood, this is the rumored HTC One M9+.

More leaked images of HTC One E9 appear, show a glossy backside

CA6UoTLWsAAwGVn

Some images of the HTC One E9 appeared earlier this month thanks to a leak via Chinese regulators, showing a phone that sports a super-big camera on its rear and a 5.5-inch screen on its front. Hardware wise, Upleaks said earlier this month that the device will likely pack a 64-bit MediaTek processor, 32 GB of flash storage, 3 GB of RAM, a 20-megapixel main camera, and a couple different front shooter variants (either 13-megapixel or 4-megapixel “UltraPixel”). On the software side, it’s almost surely going to ship with Sense 7.0 (which launched alongside the HTC One M9).

Lasting impact: 5 groups that are still doing important things with Google Glass

IMG_4833

The Google Glass Explorer program ended somewhat abruptly in January, and this didn’t come as much surprise to the Glass-bashing media nor those who tried the device for their own consumer use. In these situations, where Glass was a privacy nightmare and an underpowered gadget, the head-mounted wearable display would appear to be a failed piece of consumer technology (and Google’s Astro Teller believes that allowing this mindset to spread was one of the project’s biggest failures).

And it’s true. The first-generation of Google Glass might not really bring much value to the daily lives of most people, and it’s definitely not close to being socially acceptable quite yet. But many companies and organizations that adopted the experimental $1,500 spectacles for specific use cases weren’t so quick to dismiss the device. In fact, there are many groups—even now, after the Explorer program has ended—who are still doing some exciting things with it.

Amazon Fire TV gets expandable USB storage, support for Bluetooth headphones, more in coming update

amazon firetv hero

Amazon has today announced that a bunch of new features are heading to the company’s Fire TV media streaming device. Coming as an over-the-air update in “the coming weeks,” the new software features expandable USB storage, the ability to connect to WiFi connections that require web authentication, private listening on Fire TV, a new hidden PIN entry screen, the ability to search Prime Playlists, new shortcuts, and more.

Some of these features are coming to the company’s more compact Fire TV Stick device in a couple of weeks, too. While expandable USB storage and private listening seem to be only coming to the standard Fire TV due to hardware restraints, the new WiFi features, Prime Playlists, hidden PIN entry screen, and shortcuts seem to be coming to the Chromecast-competitor as well.

Additionally, Amazon has also announced today that the Fire TV Stick is coming to a couple new European countries—UK and Germany— on April 15th.

SEATTLE—March 24, 2015—(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon today announced new features are coming to the best-selling Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick. These features will be delivered as part of a free, over-the-air software update in the coming weeks. Amazon also announced today that Fire TV Stick is now available in the UK and Germany, joining the #1-selling streaming media box, Amazon Fire TV.

“Customer response to Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick has been overwhelming—we’ve been working hard to build more of both as quickly as possible, and we’re excited to be adding new features we think customers will love,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Devices. “In the UK and Germany, Fire TV is already the best-selling streaming media box on Amazon, and we’re thrilled to be bringing our fastest-selling Amazon device ever—Fire TV Stick—to the UK and Germany. We think millions of customers in the UK and Germany are going to love this product.”

New features coming as part of the free, over-the-air software update include:

-          Expandable USB storage on Amazon Fire TV—You can now use a connected USB mass storage device to expand your Fire TV storage for downloaded apps and games—this enables you to have more games downloaded for easy access.

-          Connect to your hotel or dorm room Wi-Fi with captive portal support out of the box—Take your favorite movies, TV shows, games, and more with you away from home—Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are the first streaming media devices to enable you to connect to Wi-Fi that requires web authentication—this includes Wi-Fi at most major hotels, as well as some universities.

-          Private listening on Fire TV—Enjoy favorite movies and TV shows after the kids go to sleep, without worrying about waking them up. Support for wireless Bluetooth headphones to Fire TV lets you listen to your movie, TV show, or music without bothering others in your household.

-          Browse and search Prime Playlists—Prime members can now take advantage of hand-crafted Prime Music playlists directly from Fire TV and Fire TV Stick—there are hundreds of expertly curated Prime Playlists to choose from based on your mood, activity or even artist or decade of choice.

-          Hidden PIN entry—With the new PIN entry screen that hides the numbers selected, you can now make sure your kids (or freeloading friends) can’t see your device PIN as you enter it on-screen to confirm a purchase on Fire TV or Fire TV Stick.

-          New shortcuts—Quickly put your Fire TV or Fire TV Stick to sleep or enable display mirroring by pressing and holding the Home button on your remote.

Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are available for purchase at www.amazon.com/firetv and www.amazon.com/firetvstick. Fire TV Stick is available to order starting today in the UK and Germany—it will start shipping on April 15. Learn more at www.amazon.co.uk/firetvstick and www.amazon.de/firetvstick.
