Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Adobe’s Creative Cloud apps for Android receive enterprise support

Adobe recently discontinued its original Photoshop Touch app in favor of a new generation of mostly single-use applications for Android (and iOS) including Photoshop Mix, Brush CC, Shape CC, and Color CC. Now large corporate customers subscribed to Creative Cloud for enterprise can take advantage of the new apps in conjunction with the high-bandwidth features that come with their tier of service, including fast deployment of these new products to teams within their companies on a case-by-case basis and 24/7 dedicated IT support. Updates with enterprise support for the aforementioned apps hit Google Play today.

This new suite of mobile apps for Android allows users to connect to the Creative Cloud platform and save new content to be used on whatever platform they choose to use to access Adobe’s suite of products. For example, Color CC allows users to pick colors from imported images and save them to a color palette which then be accessed from desktop, tablet, or wherever else Creative Cloud apps are available. Maybe a marketing employee comes across a color in the real world that they’d like to consider using for their next campaign. Now they can rest assure that prying eyes won’t be able to steal their inspiration from them.

Along with the features mentioned above including quick deployment of new Adobe tools and services to employees and priority 24/7 support, Creative Cloud for enterprise puts more power (read: liability) in the hands of corporations by allowing them to store assets – new designs, marketing campaigns, etc – on their own servers, behind their own firewalls. Large businesses are typically slow to adopt new technologies due to stringent security requirements put in place by the same employees who are tasked with considering what new technologies to introduce to their workforces. That’s just to name a few of the additions that come with that costly tier of service, though.

The updates are available now in Google Play. For those who want the APK downloads, they can be found below.

Waze for Android updated, appears to work on Android M now

If you’re someone living on the bleeding edge by running the Android M Developer Preview on your main device, you may be happy with today’s update to the Waze traffic and navigation app.

After many complaints in the Waze forums (like this thread) and other locations around the web about the app crashing on startup for users on Android M, version 3.9.5.0 released today seems to fix the issue. Before I downloaded this update the app would not work at all, and as soon as I installed the update it to function. One commenter on APKMirror indicates that this update fixed the app for them as well.

This update only seems to include bug fixes like this support for Android M – I haven’t been able to find any above the hood changes. Though if I do, I’ll update this post. The size of the update is 37.56MB, and can be downloaded from Google Play or as an APK from APKMirror (click here). If you’re running Android M there’s a good chance you know how to install an APK.

You know what I haven’t once thought since purchasing my ASUS ZenWatch? “Man, I wish this thing had a software keyboard!” Nope, not even once. But someone clearly has, as the developers behind the 5-TILES keyboard for Android smartphones have brought their signature tile-based keyboard to Android Wear users in the form of a messaging app, called Wear 5-TILES.

Sony Mobile CEO: Cash flow is ‘very healthy,’ no plans to leave the smartphone business

Following news of intense mobile unit layoffs and more than underwhelming 2014 results, rumors began spreading that Sony Mobile had plans to essentially shutter its smartphone business. These were proven false for the time being when the company launched its Xperia Z4 handset (and the subsequent Xperia Z4v for Verizon stateside), but now Sony Mobile CEO Hiroki Totoki has come out (via Arabian Business) to further reiterate that it has no plans to leave the smartphone business…

Google Store now selling Nest Cam in the UK, Belgium, France, Ireland, & Netherlands

Google has expanded availability of its new Nest Cam product to more countries after officially unveiling the device last month. Starting today, customers in Belgium, France, Ireland, Netherlands, & United Kingdom will be able to pick up the device through the online Google Store. Google previously launched the device for customers in Canada and United States through its online store.

The product, alongside other new Nest products shown off in June, are the fruits of Google’s acquisitions of smart thermostat maker Nest and connected security camera company Dropcam last year. Nest Cam offers a lot of what made Dropcam cameras popular, offering 1080p HD video, 130-degree field of view, 8 infrared LEDs, night vision video support, companion mobile apps, and cloud recording and video history through a subscription service.

Nest Cam is available for $199 USD from the Google Store.

To the surprise of nobody, HTC losses mount in Q2

As predicted by the company itself, Android device manufacturer HTC today reported bleak earnings results for the April through June period. For the three month period, the Taiwan-based company lost NT$8.03 billion after tax and operating costs are taken into consideration. HTC reported profits during the prior four quarters, but apparently those couldn’t hold, likely due to lackluster demand for the One M9. Today’s reported losses spread out over the company’s shares come out to an approximate NT$9.70 ($0.3) per share. Revenue for the quarter was NT$33 billion.

Alleged Galaxy Note 5 CAD drawings show Galaxy S6-esque design

Evidence is mounting to suggest that Samsung’s next great phablet is going to take heavy design cues from the latest Galaxy S smartphone. NoWhereElse has published a bunch of CAD drawings which claim to be an accurate representation for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5. If genuine, it shows a device which essentially looks like a big version of the Galaxy S6 with a space to store a stylus.

We’ve seen several concept renders in the past, and even schematic leaks from case makers. This is one of the first which claims to be an official CAD 3D drawing. Like the S6 it features a central micro USB port on the bottom edge in between a 3.5mm headphone jack and a loudspeaker grille. Traditionally, Samsung’s Note series’ phones have the loudspeaker on the back.

Although we don’t get a good look at the materials used, it’s more than likely that — if this is a giant S6 — we’ll see heavy use of both glass and metal for the chassis and body of the device. We could also see a non-removable battery with Sammy opting to use a solid glass back which curves towards the metal edges.

Once interesting factoid to note: The 3D model points to a screen measuring 5.7-inches diagonally, suggesting that Samsung might not opt to enlarge its display real estate when the Note 5 is eventually announced and released later this year.

Check out NWE’s video of the 3D CAD drawing below:

At long last, Android OEMs facing lawsuits against bloatware

At long last, action is being taken against bloatware on Android devices. Samsung and Oppo are facing lawsuits over their use of pre-installed apps. Both companies are being sued by the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission, as revealed in a report by the Shanghai Daily. In a study of 20 phones, multiple devices were found to have apps which were not only pre-installed but also unremovable.

Turing Phone promises physical strength and secure communications like no other

Turing Robotic Industries recently took the wraps off a phone which — if it lives up to its promises — could be essentially indestructible and ridiculously secure. The Turing Phone is built from a “revolutionary liquid-metal” called Liquidmorphium which is stronger than steel and titanium. If that sounds familiar to you, there’s good reason for that. Apple has been in partnership with a company which manufactures a very similar material for some time now.

Future YotaPhone handsets will have Sailfish OS instead of Android

Update: While we can’t verify the authenticity of this quote, it seems that Yahoo News might be wrong..

We do not have any ongoing development of Jolla version of YotaPhone. I can’t say how things will turn in the future. Maybe Sailfish will obtain a certain market share as mobile OS.

At this point of time, we are fully committed to Android and recently migrated our customer base to 5.0 and working on the next generation of Android OS.

Yota, the Russian company behind the dual-screened YotaPhone, has reportedly decided (via Yahoo News) to no longer pack Google’s Android on its future handsets. Instead, the phone maker will be going with Jolla’s Sailfish, a spin-off of Nokia’s former MeeGo Linux distribution. Sailfish, which was built by many of the same engineers that worked on MeeGo, reportedly beat out Samsung’s Tizen in Yota’s search for an Android alternative…

Google Chrome for Android hits 1 billion installs

Not many apps have managed to hit 1 billion installs on the Play Store, but today another has been added to the list. Facebook Messenger became the 10th app to hit 1 billion installs early last month, Google Hangouts managed to hit the same milestone just a couple weeks ago, and now Google Chrome is following suit to become the 12th app to hit 1 billion.

Not many apps have reached this number, and third-party apps from Zuckerberg and Co. are the only outside of Google to do it. Only three, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp, have managed to see this many users. As you might expect, other popular Google-made apps like Google Maps and Gmail passed 1 billion a while ago.

Here are 3 Android apps to help you read news better

Between Google+, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and the 100 other apps and services that vie for my attention in any given day (okay, maybe an exaggeration), it can sometimes feel very debilitating to try and keep up with everything happening in the world. Unless you read all day and train yourself to be a speed reader, how are you to see everything that’s happening in your areas of interest? Most of us just don’t have that kind of time in our lives to stay informed, work 8 hour days, and still maintain a healthy lifestyle. And as we’ve seen in cases like Internet providers’ attempting to prioritize their own services over those of companies like Netflix, being informed matters.
