Dell Chromebook 13 (2015) unboxing and first impressions [Video]

Of all the Chromebooks that were announced this year, it was the new Dell Chromebook 13 range that caught our eye. Unlike most Chromebooks, it’s not really low-end and cheap, but’s also not quite as extraordinarily priced as the Chromebook Pixel. It sits somewhere in between, right in no-man’s land. The cheapest model will set you back $429, while the most expensive is around $650 currently. In the UK, prices range from £484 to £856

Nexus 6P gets $50 discount in Google Store sales, Huawei Watch, Chromebooks discounted too

Google’s new Nexus phones are only a few weeks old, and yet you can already buy them at less than their full retail value. The Nexus 5X has been discounted since Black Friday weekend. Now, the flagship Nexus 6P has also seen a price drop.  You can now snag the smartphone with $50 discount in the US or Japan, direct from Google’s online store.

Smartphones aren’t the only products to see a price drop. Google has also discounted the Huawei Watch, Chromebooks and is offering deals on the new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio…

Pixel C review roundup: Good hardware, but Android on tablets needs serious work

Affirming last week’s rumors, the Pixel C is now available for purchase. Android on tablets have had a varied history and unfortunately this one suffers from the same usual friction of putting what is essentially a phone OS on a large screen. However, the device is not completely without merit on the hardware side and accompanying software updates might change that in the future.

Chromebooks win education as Google takes over from Apple & Microsoft in classrooms

Chromebooks have emerged as the clear leader in the classroom, reports CNBC, leaving former market leader Apple for dust.

Chromebooks now make up more than half of all devices in U.S. classrooms, up from less than 1 percent in 2012, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting […]

Google’s rapid gains come at the expense of its biggest rivals. Over the past three years, Apple’s market share been slashed by more than half, from 52 to 24 percent and Microsoft’s market share has slipped from 43 to 24 percent.

Chromebooks now make up 4.4M of the 8.9M devices sold to schools and school districts, with Google noting that it is seeing the dual benefit of both increased market share and overall growth in demand for computing devices in schools …

Lenovo IdeaPad N20p Touchscreen Chromebook is down to $170 today

While the door-busting Black Friday weekend deals are long gone, there are still some great discounts out there for holiday shoppers. One of today’s featured tech deals on eBay is a heavily discounted Lenovo IdeaPad N20p Chromebook. The Chrome OS-based laptop normally retails at around $300, and is currently available for just $170 in limited quantity. As a reference, the same Chromebook is priced at $290 on Amazon, where even used models are more expensive than the eBay deal.

Spec-wise, the Lenovo IdeaPad N20p is respectable. It has an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 resolution,  10-point multitouch display which can swivel around 300. Inside, there’s a 2.16GHz quad-core Intel Celeron processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It has a plethora of I/O ports too; there’s a USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 port, SD card slot, mini HDMI out, 3.5mm jack and the necessary power input. It also has built-in stereo speakers, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. Not a bad spec-list for a device that costs less than $200.

If the Lenovo IdeaPad doesn’t take your fancy (even at this price), and you’re hunting for a Chromebook this holiday season, we’ve compiled a list of what we think are the best Chromebooks for any budget.

9to5Google Gift Guide: The best Chromebooks for everyone

Tech is always on the top of someone’s gift list, and normally, one item wanted by kids and adults alike is a laptop. For those who want web access, and web-based apps, a Chromebook is an ideal gift and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. What’s more, virtually all Chromebooks come with 100GB free Google Drive cloud storage…

Google: Chrome OS not folding into Android, Material redesign + 2016 Chromebooks coming

Officially offering a denial to a report last week claiming Chrome OS would merge into Android by 2017, Google has taken to its Chrome blog to say Chrome OS is here to stay. Chromebooks that run the Chrome operating system has taken off especially well in the classroom, giving Google added incentive to ensure Chrome OS users that the platform isn’t facing any dramatic changes in the near future. Hoping to convince users that recent reports of the future of Chrome OS are wrong, Google has shared some usage numbers and even offered a peek into the future of Chrome OS…

Google confirms its ‘Pixel C’ Android tablet w/ detachable keyboard, Android Marshmallow, more

Google has today confirmed that it’s introducing the next entry in its Pixel line: the Pixel C. This tablet, unlike the Pixel devices that preceded it, will launch not with Chrome OS, but with Android — 6.0 Marshmallow to be exact. The device also offers a detachable keyboard — taking on the likes of Microsoft’s Surface and the iPad Pro — and comes with the same high-quality build found with the original Pixels. And like the original Pixels, this device isn’t a Nexus; it’s completely made by Google in-house, and there’s no tramp stamp from any other OEM to be found on its body.

Google adds new Dell Chromebook 13 to Chromebook for Work lineup, available September 17

Chromebook for Work is Google’s lineup of premium Chrome OS-powered laptops which it promotes as easy to deploy, highly secure, and ready to run legacy Window applications through OS virtualization. Today the company announced that Dell will begin selling a new one of these business-ready Chromebooks starting September 17th, called the Dell Chromebook 13.

The Chromebook 13 is, like the rest of the Chromebook for Work line, packing a serious punch for a computer running such a lightweight operating system. It has a 13.3″ full HD touchscreen display (1920×1080), a 5th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, a backlit keyboard and glass touchpad, and a palmrest made out of magnesium alloy. The laptop is quoted for 12 hours of battery life, although these ratings are usually generous. The starting price will be $399 when it goes on sale, with no more detail on upgrade options or variants. “Enterprise class performance at an economical price point,” Google says in its blog post.

Chrome OS certainly does hold a lot of promise for IT departments frustrated with the current solutions out there, namely Windows and all the tumult going on at Microsoft over the company’s strategy for the operating system going forward. Google’s operating system was built at a much later time, and without the baggage of years and years of developing and supporting software meant for a place and time that has since passed. In my day-to-day there are rarely more than a few edge case applications and tools I need a full-on desktop computer for, so the ability of Chrome OS to virtualize Windows and run its applications is just icing on the cake of an OS which recognizes that many business-related programs can run in the web and be almost indistinguishable from their desktop equivalents — especially with Chrome OS’s ability to run web apps as individual windowed apps.

Touchscreen + Chrome OS: Do they work together? [Video]

Acer did something a little unusual last month when it announced an all-in-one Chromebase desktop with a touchscreen. It’s the first of its kind, and the company hopes it can bring something unique to the market. I’ve been testing it for the past week and, although it’s clearly not an input replacement for the mouse and keyboard, it actually has its uses.

The entire 21.5-inch 1080p panel has a layer of touch sensors over the top of it. It’s ten-point multitouch, and can be used to do all manner of things. It’s mostly intuitive too. There’s little unusual or unfamiliar if you’ve been using touchscreen smartphones for any length of time.
