HTC holding ‘Double Exposure’ event in New York on October 8th

Site default logo image

HTC just blessed our inbox with an invite for a media event referred to as “Double Exposure.” Set to take place on October 8th in New York City, the invitation’s tagline sounds like something to do with photography and looking at HTC’s track record, we’re thinking it’s related to the company’s recent inclusion of dual-cameras on its top-shelf smartphones. Whatever the case, we’ll be there to find out what the Taiwanese phone maker is up to. So be sure to save the date.

AT&T’s HTC One M8 finally receives its Android 4.4.3 update

Android 4.4.4 might be one of the final KitKat releases before Google moves its mobile operating system to version L, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is happily riding on the new software bandwagon. After waiting what probably felt like an eternity, the HTC One M8 on AT&T is finally getting a taste of Android 4.4.3. Sure, it’s not the latest and greatest software that Mountain View has to offer, but today’s update does manage to ship with its share of enhancements.

Samsung and Apple will sew-up the smartwatch market, others will fail, predicts analyst

Site default logo image

Samsung and Apple will largely own the smartwatch market between them, predicts Jackdaw Research chief analyst Jan Dawson in a report being issued later today and seen by Re/code.

Dawson said that new players should “stay out of the market,” and existing players should scale back their plans.

“We do not recommend that existing vendors should maintain current levels of investment when market growth and the overall revenue opportunity remain poor,” Dawson said. “It is unlikely that more than one or two small vendors will be able to make a sustainable business out of smartwatches in the face of competition from Samsung and […] Apple” …

Windows Phone to get sloppy seconds on HTC One M8

The HTC One M8 has been proclaimed as the year’s best Android hardware. After its initial release from HTC, Google developed a Play Edition of the device that ran stock Android. Now, just a few months later, the hardware looks to be recycled again, as The Verge reporter Tom Warren reported on Sunday that a Windows Phone version of the device will be launching later this year.

[tweet https://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/493430170326691840]

This proves interesting, as just a few days ago, a feature list of Windows Phone 8.1 lists “support for smart cases” on the change log. What does this mean you ask? Remember the smart (dot) case HTC launched alongside the M8?

HTC’s Android Wear smartwatch mocked up based on leaked details

While it was originally rumored that the so-called HTC “One Wear” smartwatch could be round, an artist rendition of what HTC’s first Android Wear smartwatch suggests otherwise. The mockup, which surfaced this morning, looks more like an LG G Watch than a Moto 360.

Originally published by @evleaks, the mockup shows off a metal wristband and square display with a thin black bezel. The smartwatch has a split-screen user interface with three panes showing the date and time, weather, traffic and a Hangouts notification.

The Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch remain the only Android Wear smartwatches currently available for purchase.

Two HTC executives reportedly leaving the company

HTC’s Chief Marketing Officer Ben Ho and President of Engineering and Operations Fred Liu have resigned from the company, according to Bloomberg. These two departures and a recent move by the Taiwanese smartphone maker’s VP of design describe the type of major personnel changes taking place at HTC. In his short time with the company, Ho oversaw the firm’s “Here’s To Change” marketing campaign, which featured a series of commercials starring Hollywood A-lister, Robert Downey Jr.

How to install Android L developer preview on HTC One (M7)

After Google made its new Android L developer preview available to Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 last month, it wasn’t long before we saw an unofficial port to other devices. First we got the Nexus 4, and now a user at the xda-developers forums was able to get the developer preview up and running on an HTC One (M7).

Not many expected to see a HTC One (M7) port, but XDA Senior Member ssrij and a team of developers managed to port the Android L Developer Preview to this former flagship device… The port is still in alpha stage, and some things simply don’t work. Running Android L on first generation HTC One was made possible thanks to ramdisk and kernel modifications, so it might not run as it should. However, the Developer Preview was made to show people how the Android L will look like and what functions we should be expected.

You can expect lots of stuff not to work at the moment, including: WiFi, Bluetooth, data, camera, and sound, but the developers are working to fix some of the issues with the initial alpha release for the M7. More info on the original forum post here.

You can also choose your own custom image, although some of them may not look quite right.

Verizon promo video for HTC One Remix briefly appears on YouTube

Back in May, HTC officially unveiled the “beautifully compact” One Mini 2 phone, but with sparse details on United States availability. Early rumors pointed to the device launching in the United States on Verizon, but rebranded as the HTC One Remix. Today, Big Red seemingly confirmed the One Remix by inadvertently uploading a promo video for it to its YouTube channel. The video has since been set to private, but not without some quick eyes catching what it talked about.

HTC One M8 and mid-range phones put the company back in the black after a string of losses

Site default logo image

HTC, which started losing money last October, has kept its promise to return to the black in Q2 this year according to unaudited figures revealed in a brief statement.

Unaudited quarterly revenue was NT$65.06 billion and net profit before tax was NT$2.76 billion. Operating profit was NT$2.43 billion, and net profit after tax was NT$2.26 billion

The company said in February that it planned to follow Samsung’s lead in making handsets across all price-points, stating that it had “missed a huge chunk of the mid-tier market.” Revealing further losses in April, the company said that it expected to return to profit in Q2 thanks to both new mid-range phones like the Desire 816 and its well-regarded flagship One M8 …
