moto-g-4-launch

Update: There’s also a smaller, less powerful version called the Moto G Play coming to the States with a 2,800mAh battery. Lenovo took to the stage this morning at an event in New Delhi, India, where it took the wraps off the latest generation Moto G smartphones. Moto G 4th gen shows up in leaked press render, sans fingerprint sensor

moto-g-4

Well-known leaker, Even Blass has produced yet another render of the next generation Moto G, this time it’s the regular model without a fingerprint sensor on the front panel. If accurate, it virtually confirms the previous speculation that this year’s G-series Moto phones will be available in regular and ‘Plus’ variants.

Moto G4 leaks in real life with redesigned camera housing, front-loaded fingerprint sensor

moto-g-4

With four of this year’s big-name smartphone makers having already announced — and some launched — their most important smartphones for 2016, our attention can turn to the rest. For the past few years, the Moto G has undoubtedly been Motorola’s (now Lenovo’s) most important device range. With competitive specs, a low price and — most importantly — stock Android software, the G has long been a recipe for success. And this year, the range could be getting a serious feature upgrade: A fingerprint sensor.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow rolling out to 2nd-gen Moto G handsets over the next few days

moto-g-2nd-gen

Good news for owners of the Moto G 2nd-Gen: an OTA update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow has begun rolling out in batches, and all users should receive it over the next few days.

You’ll need to be on the latest stock Lollipop 5.0.2 ROM to receive it. Anyone who has flashed their ROM to a different version will need to restore, but no need to bother if you’re running the Stock 6.0 Soak Build (MPB24.65-24/34) as this is identical to the final release version.

Check out this Reddit thread for more details. The LG G4 began receiving the same update last week for T-Mobile users and yesterday for those on AT&T.

Motorola: We’re not killing off the Moto G or Moto E

Moto-G-buy

Recently, Lenovo’s chief made some comments regarding the future of Motorola and Lenovo smartphones. Those comments seemed to indicate that the Moto brand name would only be used for high-end smartphones, while Lenovo’s ‘Vibe’ lineup would form the bottom end of the companies product portfolio. Some saw this as confirmation that Moto G and Moto E handsets would be discontinued.

Speaking to The Verge, a Motorola representative was quick to debunk those suggestions:

“Although we are simplifying the combined Motorola and [Lenovo] portfolio, we have no plans to retire Moto G, our most successful smartphone, or Moto E.”

Despite the fact that Lenovo’s chief seemed to be indicating an end to the bottom-tier Motorolas, it seems that instead, the Moto and Vibe brands will be used in different markets. The Moto G and Moto E are incredibly successful in a number of markets, particularly North America. In Asia, the Vibe brand is a better fit. So it could be instead that it slims down its portfolio, while still continuing to build new models of affordable Moto-branded products.

Most of the confusion and interest surrounding Motorola and its phones stems from a recent discovery that the Motorola brand name will be dying. Since then, it seems as though everything has been up in the air, at least in the media. While Motorola is going away, the Moto brand is too strong to give up. Just like it did with ThinkPad, Lenovo is going to continue using the Moto moniker for its devices.

All Moto phones in 2016 will have fingerprint sensors, screens larger than 5-inches

moto-x-play-x-style

Following news that Lenovo would be phasing out the Motorola brand-name, tech enthusiasts globally were intrigued to hear what else the company’s new owners had in store for us. Will Moto phones be just as good as they have been in the past? Will they keep the stock Android experience?

Lenovo’s chief, having spilled the beans regarding Google’s plans to launch its Play Services in China this year was seemingly keen to also share his thoughts on the Moto brand and what the next couple of years has in store for the fashionable smartphone family. As with all changes made when new owners take over, there’s both good news and bad news…
