Yesterday, Android Pay officially launched with eight total banks supported, across four payment networks: American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa. One of the most common banks was unfortunately left unavailable for those attempting to add cards to their Android Pay wallet yesterday, but now that bank — Wells Fargo — is officially supporting the new mobile payments service.

As per yesterday’s announcement, Wells Fargo would be coming “in the next few days.”

American Express, Bank of America, Discover, Navy Federal Credit Union, PNC, Regions Bank, USAA, and U.S. Bank. Wells Fargo will be available in the next few days, Capital One and Citi are coming soon, and we’re adding new banks all the time.

Now, as I can independently confirm myself, Wells Fargo cards can be added to Android Pay just fine.

Android Pay has fairly decent support across banks as well as retail locations that are taking the service, but there are some odd exclusions. For instance, Chase, which is one of the “Big Four” and has more than 5,100 branches and 16,100 ATMs nationwide, still doesn’t support Android Pay. Other banks, including Bancorp-backed Simple (which has confirmed its intentions on Twitter), as well as Citi and Capital One, are slated to be coming soon.

In case you aren’t aware, the Android Pay app is coming as an update to the already-existing Google Wallet app. You can grab the new version on the Play Store soon. Google Wallet, which no longer has support for tap-to-pay, can now be found on the Play Store as its own newly-redesigned app.

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Starting today, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. (NYSE:WFC) customers will be able to use an Android mobile device to use Android Pay to conveniently make purchases at over one million merchant locations nationwide. Customers with an Android device running KitKat (4.4) or higher can simply unlock their device, place it over a payment terminal that accepts contactless payments, and pay for goods and services with the security of a consumer Wells Fargo Debit or Credit Card, or Small Business Debit Card. The new feature will be rolling out to customers gradually over the next few days.

“Today, we’re pleased to participate in Android Pay, increasing the availability of mobile payments to millions of Android device-loving Wells Fargo customers. This represents the latest offering in our commitment to give customers new, innovative ways to pay safely and easily, how and where they want”

After a customer makes a payment with Android Pay using their Wells Fargo card, they then receive a payment confirmation and transaction details on their phone. All transactions are monitored with Wells Fargo risk and fraud detection systems, and Wells Fargo Credit Cards and Debit Cards are protected by Zero Liability, which means customers are not responsible if they promptly report unauthorized transactions.

“Today, we’re pleased to participate in Android Pay, increasing the availability of mobile payments to millions of Android device-loving Wells Fargo customers. This represents the latest offering in our commitment to give customers new, innovative ways to pay safely and easily, how and where they want,” said Jim Smith, head of Virtual Channels for Wells Fargo.

Recent survey data from the Federal Reserve highlights the way that mobile devices are changing the way consumers make payments; 22 percent of all mobile phone owners reported having made a mobile payment in the 12 months prior to the survey, up from 17 percent in 2013 and 15 percent in 2012.

China-based Elephone isn’t known for making any high-end hardware, and besides being yet another maker of really cheap Chinese phones, they aren’t known for much of anything at all. But that might change soon, as the company is purportedly preparing to launch a smartwatch running Google’s Android Wear. And while that alone might not be all too exciting (other Chinese OEMs like Huawei have beaten them to the punch), this could — knowing Elephone’s target market — be part of Google’s bigger plan to make a move back into mainland China…

PSA: Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition is now getting Android 5.1

According to a few different tips around the web, those who own the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition — which isn’t that many people, mind you — are now receiving an over-the-air update to Android 5.1. Yep, that’s the version of Android that started rolling out to Nexus devices a full six months ago.

An Android Police tipster says that the update is arriving on a LRX21P device, updating to Android 5.1 with build LMY47O. You can download the update straight from Google’s servers by clicking here. Otherwise, just keep an eye on your device for an over-the-air update notification to pop up sometime soon.

If it took this long for the phone to get 5.1 Lollipop, I wouldn’t be surprised if we never saw Marshmallow. And who knows if and when the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition will get the latest 5.1.1 Lollipop build.

A Galaxy S7 render that’s not real at all

One of the most exciting new features that popped up in the first Developer Preview of Android Marshmallow was a “Dark” system theme option. While it didn’t do much besides change the background colors of the Settings app, it seemed to be the beginnings of what could have been a system-wide dark theme. Then, the feature disappeared in Developer Preview 2, and its fate was left unclear — until now. For now, the dark mode in Android M is dead, but it might just make a comeback…

Apple is very rarely the first to introduce new features for features’ sake. The Apple Watch launched an entire year after the first Android Wear devices were unveiled. Touch ID came to the iPhone years after fingerprint sensors were seen on Android phones, and the company was one of the last smartphone manufacturers to offer a larger-screened phone with the release of the iPhone 6 Plus.  The examples of Apple being late to the game — although some would argue, the first to do things right — are endless. But this isn’t one of those cases. While Samsung dabbles with edged screens, Apple has today introduced what I think is a game-changing new experience for developers to play with. And play they will.

I’m not an Apple fanboy at all. In fact, I own one Apple smartphone — the iPhone 6 — at the moment, alongside five or six different Android phones. The Nexus 6 is usually my daily driver, and I (kind of, sort of) use Android Wear as my smartwatch OS of choice. I’ve never owned an Apple Watch nor an Apple TV, I didn’t even own an iPhone until the iPhone 5, and I have only been in possession of an iPad for maybe 6 months — the first generation iPad mini — before I found myself never using it at all and decided to sell it on eBay. All of this said, at least one of the improvements Apple brought to the iPhone line today has very much impressed me.

And not only do I think it’s cool, but it sets the iPhone line apart from anything that Android makers offer in 2015…

In case you missed it, Google has been going through a pretty thorough rebranding lately. Besides the company’s main logo change on Google.com, many of its apps have begun incorporating the company’s new front-facing style as well. We saw Search, Translate, and Maps get new logos with the new, cartoony “G” last week, but now Google+ for Android has been updated with the new logo as well.

The new version of Google+, which comes in at version 6.3 (up from 6.2), pretty much only packs this one single feature. If you want to grab it, though, be sure to head over to the Play Store and check for updates. If you’d rather install it right now, you can grab the latest APK over at APKMirror. We’ll keep you in the loop as the rest of Google’s apps get monumental updates with new icons.

Game on: Sony uses Siri-themed secret message to taunt Apple

Leading up to Apple’s “Hey Siri”-themed press event today, Siri has been giving out a lot of unhelpful announcement hints to users who say “Hey Siri, give me a hint”. One of these was a binary code, which when decoded only revealed the word “Gotcha”. It goes without saying that if you want some real hints about what Apple’s going to announce, all you need to do is to read Mark’s roundup.

But Sony, the company that just last week unveiled the world’s first 4K smartphone, the Xperia Z5 Premium, has taken to Twitter to taunt the Cupertino-based company. Also using the familiar binary, Sony wrote “01000111 01100001 01101101 01100101 00100000 01101111 01101110 00101110”. Converted to text? That’s “Game on.”

According to the well-connected Derek Ross, HTC hasn’t given up yet. Although its smartphone business is struggling more than ever, the company is reportedly working on an Android Wear smartwatch to compete with the devices we just saw announced at IFA. According to Ross’ report, the device is round a la the Moto 360 and the Huawei watch, sports a resolution of 360 x 360, and is codenamed “halfbeak”…

Of the Nexus announcements scheduled for later this month, the rumored LG Nexus 5 is definitely the one we know more about. A month ago the first full renders leaked, and just a few weeks ago, a photo of the device in the flesh managed to leak out as well. At least a couple publications have confirmed that this physical build is indeed the new Nexus, and we’ve even seen independent reports confirming its specifications as well.

But it’s not over yet, as Android Pit has now come out with images it claims are the new device, and they’re definitely the best look we’ve had yet…

Every month, Google updates its Android developers website with some data on the state of Android version distribution. Last month, Lollipop was creeping up to being installed on 20% of Android phones, a milestone that has now been reached. Amazingly, KitKat, version 4.4 of Android released almost two years ago, is still in the lead with an almost 40% majority as of September’s numbers…

Google preparing to release another security update for Nexus devices today

It was about a month ago that Google announced that it would begin pushing security updates to Nexus devices on a monthly basis, and now it looks like the second of those is about to be released. The Nexus factory images page hasn’t been updated yet, but several software update pages on T-Mobile’s website say that Google is pushing out a mandatory update today with “Android security enhancements” and “minor bug fixes”…

There’s definitely not much to see here, and this update doesn’t even go as far as to patch any specific vulnerabilities (in contrast to last month’s update, which very clearly intended to patch the vulnerability in Stagefright. We’ll update this post as soon as Google uploads the images, but you can also just keep up to date by checking your device for an OTA. Many of the updates sport build LMY48M, and range between 7 and 30 MB.

Samsung preemptively cutting 10% of headquarters staff as it falls behind Apple & Chinese manufacturers

According to a report Tuesday out of Korean newspaper Economic Daily, Samsung is laying off some 10 percent of its headquarters support workforce as well as planning to cut general expenses by 50 percent next year. This comes as the smartphone maker continues to lose ground to Apple’s iPhone line as well as Chinese Android manufacturers — like Huawei, Xiaomi, and OnePlus —  that are creating high-powered smartphones with slim margins…

We told you almost a year ago that one developer had managed to get Game Boy Color games running on Android Wear, but now someone has managed to do one better. In a recently-uploaded video shared by “Hacking Jules“, we can see Game Boy Advance games running on an LG G Watch — the oldest of the Android Wear. As usual, we in the Android community don’t need rhyme or reason for our tinkering…

As we can see in the below video, the emulator that this one particular user got running on his or her Android Wear watch is “My Boy!”, which can be found on the Play Store for just about $5. It’s pretty hilarious seeing the old Mario Kart for GBA played on a watch with a screen as tiny as this. For all intents and purposes, it’s completely unplayable. The controls completely cover the screen, and your finger would cover it more.

We saw tons of leaks and rumors about the recently-announced Moto 360 2nd generation prior to its announcement, but none of them mentioned that the company had any plans to sell a budget-friendly version of the device aimed at kids. Now we know, thanks to a blog post on a Motorola engineer’s website, that the company did indeed plan to market such a device — a “value tier” Moto 360 made with bright colors. Sadly, the project was apparently cancelled sometime before IFA rolled around…
