Valve’s Half-Life can run on Android Wear, but it isn’t playable at all [Video]

Play Half Life on Android Wear - YouTube 2015-07-23 14-13-20

Valve is known for many games, but perhaps none as well as Half-Life. And if for some reason you have an intense itch to stir up some nostalgia and run the game on your new Android Wear smartwatch… well, there’s a guide for that. But if you’re like me and understand that there’s really no reason to waste time doing this if someone else has already done it for you, then check out the below video…

IDC: Samsung loses 3% of smartphone market to Apple and others in Q2

Site default logo image

Worldwide Smartphone Market Posts 11.6% Year-Over-Year Growth in Q2 2015, the Second Highest Shipment Total for a Single Quarter, According to IDC - prUS25804315 2015-07-23 11-00-04

IDC has just released its smartphone market share data for Q2 2015, and at least one thing is clear: Samsung is still struggling, and Apple is still doing really well. The Korean company’s smartphone market share dropped from 24.8% to 21.7% year-over-year, a 3.1 percentage point drop. Conveniently, while other manufacturers made gains as well, Apple’s numbers are up about the same number — 2.4 percentage points year-over-year to 14.1%…

New leaked images likely show the upcoming 2015 Moto X in the flesh [Gallery]

Update: We now have a really attractive new render showing the device in white and gold, too…

Motorola has not had any success keeping its handsets a secret this year. We’ve seen half a dozen leaks of the company’s upcoming 2015 Moto G, and now — thanks to Android Peru on Facebook — we have yet another look at a device that purports to be the company’s upcoming Moto X. Previous leaks have been very sketchy, but these appear to be as legit as it gets. In fact, we had our hands on a prototype Nexus 6 last year, and it had identifying barcodes and labels almost identical to the ones seen in these pictures…

Google acquires Pixate, makes its mobile app prototyping app free

tumblr_nrt9eoHeDw1tcykk3o1_1280-1

Pixate has been acquired by Google, according to an announcement on Pixate’s blog. The company, which made software for prototyping and designing mobile applications, has also decided to make Pixate Studio completely free — and is reducing the cost of its Pixate cloud service.

Here’s the full announcement from Pixate:

Today, I am very proud to announce that Pixate has joined Google’s design team.

Pixate was started three years ago with the goal to make designing and prototyping native mobile applications easy and more accessible. Our early adopters helped guide us along the path of making tools and services that best fit the needs of designers struggling to turn their ideas into reality. Today, we have companies of all sizes, from single-person startups to global corporations, using Pixate to bring their app ideas to life.

We don’t want to stop there. Our small team at Pixate has some really big ideas, and with the help of Google we’ll be able to bring those ideas to the design community at scale. We’ve become an essential part of the workflow for tens of thousands of designers, and are excited about expanding our mission at Google to reach millions of product teams worldwide.

Starting today we’re making Pixate Studio free and dramatically reducing the cost of the Pixate cloud service. You can read all about that in our FAQ. I sincerely want to thank all of you for your invaluable feedback and the endlessly inspiring prototypes you’ve created with Pixate. The landscape of design tooling is changing rapidly, and Pixate is committed to staying at the forefront.

Google Glass ‘Enterprise Edition’ is foldable, more water resistant, rugged for the workplace

Introduction to Google Glass - YouTube 2015-07-21 09-35-58

Google Glass Explorer Edition

As we’ve come to learn more about the next iteration of Google Glass, it’s clear that this device isn’t the “Google Glass 2.0” that many diehard fans of the product — however many there are — have been longing for. Google Glass “Enterprise Edition” or “EE,” as the company is referring to it internally, is rather a spinoff of the Explorer Edition and an incremental revision targeted at the workplace. Google is ditching the fashion runways and #throughGlass pictures — and they’re getting into the enterprise where Glass has practical use cases.

And with that, Tony Fadell and company had to deeply consider with EE how the device looks, works, and functions. We’re familiar with multiple prototypes that are nearing the final stages of revision, and one thing is very clear: This isn’t going to be a drastic departure visually from the Explorer Edition. It has been tweaked, though, and there are at least a few differences noticeable from the outside. It folds like a regular pair of glasses, and because it’s first and foremost being built for the workplace, it has a more rugged build and appearance…

OnePlus 2 hits AnTuTu once again, scores a modest 63,719

gsmarena_002The details of the OnePlus 2 have slowly been making their way out thanks to OnePlus’ ingenious — and annoying — marketing tactics. We know so far that it’s going to have a Snapdragon 810 V2.1 SoC, 4 GB of RAM, a 3,300 mAh battery, and a sweet new 13-megapixel camera. And while all of these specifications are nice to know, there’s still something we won’t know until we actually get to test the phone out for ourselves: how it performs. AnTuTu scores have typically been a good indicator of this, however, and now the OnePlus 2 has been spotted hitting the benchmark app once again, scoring a modest 63,719.

PSA: AT&T suspends 5.1 Lollipop update for first gen Moto X

Moto-X1

For reasons unknown, AT&T has just suspended the rollout of Android 5.1 to the first generation Moto X. Motorola announced the update last month, and it first began rolling out to AT&T Moto X (2013) owners on July 7th.

Here’s what AT&T says on its support website:

UPDATE SUSPENDED

Effective July 20, 2015, the Android 5.1 (Lollipop) software update for the Moto X (XT1058) has been temporarily suspended. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

As mentioned, it’s not yet clear why AT&T has pulled the update for now. The company does say that it is working to resolve the issue as soon as it can, and the rollout should continue soon.

As of today, customers in Belgium, Canada, France, Ireland, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the United States (except Puerto Rico) can purchase Nest’s new CO2 detector.

In case you missed it, Nest unveiled the new Nest Protect last month, and with it comes a new split spectrum sensor to detect different kinds of smoke, a new smoke chamber to prevent false positives, new software features, and the opportunity to get a discount on home insurance. It’s available on the Google Store and from Nest.com for $99 (although currently out of stock through the former).

Motorola quietly introduces the 2nd gen Moto Hint w/ new design, better battery

Motorola has seemingly introduced a revised 2nd generation Moto Hint, bringing some moderate improvements to the Bluetooth headset that the company introduced last year. Free Google Play apps and games are now available in Sudan

Flag_of_Sudan.svg

Google announced today that, for the first time, free apps and games are available in Google Play Store for those located in Sudan.

As part of a commitment to helping more people around the globe use technology to communicate, find and create information, we’re announcing the availability of free apps and games on +Google Play in Sudan for the first time!

It’s worth noting that Google specified free apps, meaning there’s no way for those in Sudan to yet purchase apps and games. For the full list of countries that can access Google Play, head over to Google’s support site.

PSA: Microsoft’s ‘Hyperlapse Mobile’ is now out of beta

imagee

We told you in May about a new app from Microsoft called “Hyperlapse Mobile” (not to be confused with Instagram’s Hyperlapse), but it was at the time only available to an exclusive set of beta testers. Now, the app is publicly available to any and all that might want to give it a try, and — aside from its horrendous icon — I’m decently impressed.

Not much has changed since it was first introduced, and it’s still a little on the buggy side according to reviews, but overall users — myself included, briefly — are satisfied with the app’s resulting video footage.  You can import existing video into the app, choose between multiple speeds, create selfie hyperlapses, and more.

You can get Microsoft Hyperlapse Mobile right now on the Play Store for free.

Microsoft’s Cortana for Android beta leaks a bit early, we try it out [Gallery]

Microsoft announced last month that its Cortana voice assistant would be coming to Android in beta at some point in July, but it looks like the APK has managed to leak out a bit early. We grabbed it as soon as we could, and decided to give it a look. And our first impression, frankly, is that there’s not really anything special about Cortana — especially when Android has Google Now, Hound, and other competitors to pick from.
