Google’s Android ‘M’ is codenamed ‘Macadamia Nut Cookie,’ said to focus on battery life and RAM

Marshmallows

In just a couple of days, Google will—almost surely—be taking the wraps off the latest version of its mobile operating system, Android “M”. It’s rumored to be codenamed “Macadamia Nut Cookie” thanks to the latest versions of the Android Open Source Project sporting scattered mentions of “MNC,” and new information from Android Police suggests that this year Google is going to put a big focus on battery and RAM performance…

Internal Sprint document suggests Android 5.1.1 for Nexus 6 coming May 26

nexus2cee_2015-05-22-668x501

A newly-leaked internal Sprint document (via Android Police) suggests that Android 5.1.1 for the Nexus 6 is right around the corner. Specifically, build LMY47Z for Google’s 5.92-inch flagship will be released on May 26th, 2015, according to the leak. Features of the update—as has been the case with the other 5.1.1 releases—include “general updates” and “security enhancements.”

The Nexus 6 is the final Nexus device yet to receive the latest version of Android, while even the cellular Nexus 7 models have gotten the latest version (notable because the cellular tablets typically take the longest to be updated). This date would put the release of 5.1.1 for the Nexus 6 right before Google I/O kicks off on the 28th (which will likely bring the introduction of Android “M”).

We’re keeping an eye on our phones and the factory image download page as always.

Google says that larger-screened devices are helping the mobile ad business

Site default logo image

local-inventory-ads-01

While Google’s ad business is definitely in a transition phase, largely due to the shift away from personal computers towards mobile handsets, Google’s Senior Vice President of Ads & Commerce Sridhar Ramaswamy says that the company is handling this move well. Selling ads to advertisers may be harder with more of those ads ending up on mobile devices with smaller screens than notebooks and desktops, meaning more difficulty for customers to complete purchases, but Google is definitely taking steps toward slowing the rapid decline in ad prices.

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, while Google is making several moves to make advertising more valuable, the market’s more recent move to larger-screened devices has helped significantly…

Google reportedly launching native fingerprint authentication w/ Android ‘M’

Android_robot.svg

Google is set to launch Android ‘M’ at Google I/O next week, and now a new report from BuzzFeed News suggests that the company will be launching native fingerprint authentication features with the new version…

Google’s new mobile operating system, Android M, will include native fingerprint authentication, BuzzFeed News has learned. The new functionality will allow users to log in to all of the supported applications on their Android devices without entering a password.

The report is very light on details, but it does note that users will be able to log in to “all supported applications” on their devices without entering a password. Unless there are some unforeseen circumstances, it seems we’ll be hearing  more about the feature in just about a week…

Shazam has finally made its way to Android Wear

androidwear_1280x7201

Following the launch of Shazam for Apple Watch just last month, the long-time well-known music recognition app has finally made its way to Android Wear. With the app, you can recognize songs without ever taking your phone out of your pocket, see the list of songs you’ve tagged in My Shazam in the Android app, and watch the lyrics for the song that’s playing right on your Android Wear device.

High five, Shazam is now on Android Wear!

  • Keep your phone in your pocket – see what’s playing with 2 taps
  • Songs are added to My Shazam, and to your My Shazam Tracks playlist for connected Rdio or Spotify users
  • Watch lyrics unfold in real time, right on your wrist

You can grab the app right now by downloading the latest version of the Shazam app for Android, and the Android Wear counterpart on your watch should appear soon after. We’ve tried it out and it doesn’t look like the update has rolled out quite yet, but it will likely pop up very soon.

Google reportedly ready to launch Android-based ‘Brillo’ OS for the Internet of Things

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

According to a report this morning from The Information, Google is working on new software built specifically for lower memory devices like smart home products. While current versions of Android are aimed at devices with at least 512 megabytes of memory, this new spinoff of the Android operating system, codenamed “Brillo,” is aimed at low-powered devices with as little as 32 or 64 megabytes of RAM…

Android Lollipop for Sprint’s HTC One E8 rolling out now

HTC-E8-Sprint

Almost daily, Android Lollipop makes its way to yet another slew of handsets across a variety of carriers. Yesterday, HTC’s Mo Versi (the guy who is basically the bringer of all the update joy to HTC device owners) came out to say that Sprint’s HTC One E8 has been approved for Lollipop and that the update would begin rolling out “tomorrow.” Well, tomorrow is today.

If you’re an owner of the Sprint HTC One E8, be sure to keep an eye on your phone for the software to roll out over-the-air. If you’re the owner of another important device that has yet to receive Android Lollipop, keep your eyes on this space. Even though we’re going into Google I/O 2015 next week with some devices still not updated, it’s only a matter of time before your handset gets Lollipop, too.

It won’t be long before we’re doing Android “M” rollout posts.

Video On Demand content comes to mobile Twitch app in latest update

EmailVODS

Twitch announced today that its mobile application now supports video on demand content, a feature that has been requested by fans of the service for quite some time. While the app was previously streaming-only, users can now access “highlights and past broadcasts” from all Twitch Partners and what Twitch says is a growing list of broadcasters whose videos are HTTP live streaming (HLS)-enabled.

While the official change log for this version only mentions this one major new feature, looking at reviews for the Android version reveals a few more details. The latest version of Twitch reportedly also sports a new colored status bar, and a new emote panel as well. At least one user reported that “some of the emotes are very small and hard to see” in the new emote panel.

Twitch says that they encountered a security concern that required them to re-list the app on the Play Store, rather than simply providing a new version. So for those that already have the app, you’ll need to head over to the new app listing and download version 4.0. Twitch recognizes that this might be an annoyance to some and says they’re going to do their best to “make it a one-time deal.”

Android 5.1.1 OTA image for Nexus 4 is now available, here’s how to install it (Update: Nexus 5, too)

lg-nexus-4

Update: The OTA download link is now available for the Nexus 5 as well.

Android 5.1.1 been making its way to most Nexus devices over the last few weeks, and now it’s time for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 to get a chance at the fun. The factory images still haven’t been uploaded to Google’s developers’ website, but some Nexus 4 and 5 owners are already receiving the update to 5.1.1 over-the-air and have kindly shared the download links—meaning you can get the update right now straight from Google’s servers and sideload it via ADB.

Verizon employee says Android 5.1 coming to Droid Turbo in ‘mid-June’

15 - 1

A Verizon employee has taken to his Google+ profile to share that the Motorola DROID Turbo (which is exclusive to the red carrier) will be getting its update to Android 5.1 Lollipop at some point in “mid-June.”

He also opened up about why updates to Verizon phones can sometimes take a while:

Verizon delays on latest smartphones are due to Nationwide HD Voice. We want to make sure Software updates for HD Voice service is acceptable and does not impact voice quality. Verizon is the only company that has nationwide HD Voice in the USA. AT&T just has most metro cities here and there. T-Mobile and Sprint are way behind.

Apparently, the fact that Verizon has Nationwide HD voice sets some of the company’s software updates back a bit. Android Lollipop as a whole, though, has been very slowly rolling out to several devices across various carriers for just about 6 months now, so this isn’t exactly surprising.

We’ll let you know when the update is rolling out.

Android Wear 5.1.1 OTA download links now available, here’s how to install them

Gear_Live_Wine_Red_4

Android Wear 5.1.1 is now rolling out to smartwatches everywhere, but as is the case with Google’s over-the-air updates, it might be days before you actually see the latest version pop up on your device. Rollouts start slowly, but thankfully there’s a way around Google’s careful and incremental rollout: OTA download links. It takes a little know-how to capture one, but once they’re discovered, anyone can simply download them to their computer and sideload them via ADB.

The over-the-air download links are now starting to show up for the most recently-released Android Wear 5.1.1 update, and you can find them organized below…

Samsung’s J.K. Shin refutes rumor that the Galaxy Note 5 is coming in July

note-4-mult-window

A sketchy rumor surfaced earlier this week suggesting that Samsung was planning to launch its Galaxy Note 5 flagship early this year, pegged for release sometime in July. And as often happens with rumors of this variety, Samsung has come out to outright deny it.

Korean news outlet WhoWired was first the report on the rumor, and the same publication has now shared quotes directly from Samsung’s mobile head, J.K. Shin. Not only has he denied the rumor that the Note 5 was coming early, but Shin also refuted rumors that initial sales of the S6 line was below expectations.

While we won’t know the true legitimacy of the rumor until July rolls around, it looks like this one can be laid to rest for the time being.

‘Don’t forget to be bold,’ Sergey Brin told Marissa Mayer as she walked out the door at Google

Marissa Mayer

Marissa Mayer, current CEO of Yahoo and former executive at Google, received some important advice from Google founder Sergey Brin as she walked out the door to join the Sunnyvale, California company in July, 2012.

While she tends to be more iterative and careful when it comes to making decisions, long-time friend and colleague Sergey wanted to remind her that there’s also value in being bold.

“As an engineer, my tendency is to be more conservative—to be more iterative. Even on innovation, I would rather bring out an early product and slowly make it better,” she told Fortune in a recent interview.

“Right as I left, I had my hand on the door. I said “Sergey, it’s time for me to go. I gotta go.” And I had my hand on the door, and he said “Marissa, wait.” And I turned around, and he looked at me and said, “Don’t forget to be bold.””

Mayer says that this encounter has helped her make what she hopes will be truly transformational decisions at Yahoo. Especially in those big decision moments, like deciding to acquire Tumblr, she said that she hears these words replaying in her head every day.
