Sony SmartWatch 3

See All Stories

The SmartWatch 3 is Sony’s first entry into the Android Wear device space, following many years of releasing various smartwatches—many under the same SmartWatch moniker—that never saw much mainstream success. The device is in the middle range of the spectrum price wise, and its looks and capabilities arguably are in line with its cost.

Many months after the initial SmartWatch 3 introduction, Sony announced a steel variant at CES 2015 to little fanfare. Both devices are identical internally, featuring an ARM A7 CPU, 512 MB of RAM, NFC, Bluetooth, and GPS. We got hands-on footage of both variants of the device when they were launched, and we were impressed with both. If the device fits your style, it’s a solid choice.

Huawei Watch for Women gets Google Store listing, Marshmallow OTA for Sony SmartWatch 3 begins today

Announced at CES and spotted last week, the Huawei Watch for Women now has a Google Store listing. While not yet available for purchase, it confirms that the watch will be available to purchase in the US sooner rather than later. Additionally, the Marshmallow Android Wear update for the Sony SmartWatch 3 is finally rolling out today.

Roundup: Last year’s Android Wear watches are a painless and inexpensive way to get in to the platform

With so many companies having recently announced their new generations of Android Wear watches, there’s never been a better (or cheaper) time to try out the platform. There were many risks with trying it out before. First off, Android Wear watches weren’t that cheap. For a sibling platform with limited performance, it was a lot of money to gamble on a wrist gadget you might hate. Those same watches are now last generation, and with that, they’re much cheaper and give you an easier access point to Android Wear. Perhaps more importantly, the OS itself has come on leaps and bounds since its introduction. Now you can get a great Android Wear experience without having to fork out a ton of cash…

SmartWatch 3 watch face app from Sony now on the Play Store

The SmartWatch 3 is one of a few first-gen Android Wear devices that’s still sold on the Google Store, and now Sony has published an app on the Play Store that lets you customize all of your device’s default watch faces (via Android Police).

With the app, you can customize watch face backgrounds, hands, time markers, accent colors, and more features. Additionally, you can choose “from a range of widgets” that bring information like the current date and your step count to the front of your device.

There are three basic watch faces that are new thanks to the app: Classic, Watercolor, and Sony. The first is a traditional analog face, the second sports — as you might have guessed — some colorful designs, and Sony is a very basic digital face.

To use this app, Sony says that you have to have the Android Wear companion app installed on your device, and it’s probably a good idea to make sure that you have the latest version of Android Wear installed on your device as well.

You can grab the Sony SmartWatch 3 accessory app on the Play Store for free. If you’re like me, you probably think this means a bunch of awesome new watch faces to try on other Android Wear devices. I’ll save you the time in trying; this is for the SmartWatch 3 only.

Sony Smartwatch 3 fails on waterproofing as Consumer Reports lab-tests 11 smartwatches (Video)

Site default logo image

Consumer Reports ranked the Sony Smartwatch 3 bottom out of 11 smartwatches after it twice failed tests of its waterproofing claims. The well-respected non-profit carried out a rigorous set of lab tests on 11 competing watches, including the Apple Watch, Asus Zen, the LG G Watch R, Martian Notifier, Moto 360, Pebble Steel, Samsung Gear S and Sony Smartwatch 3.

The organization tested the watches for durability, water-resistance, health functionality, readability in bright and low light, ease of use, and ease of interaction …

Nexus Player now available in the UK, new accessories land in Google Store

Amazon accidentally revealed earlier this week that this would be happening today, but we now have proof that the slip was legit: the Nexus Player has now launched on the Google Store in the UK for £79. A couple of new Android Wear accessories have also landed in the store today though, including a Sony SmartWatch 3 watch band and a standalone charger for the Asus ZenWatch.

Dimensions compared: Apple Watch much smaller than Android Wear devices

The Apple Watch was once again shown off at Apple’s “Spring Forward” event on Monday, and many have been left wondering how the device compares to the Android Wear devices currently on the market. Technology has surely evolved a bit since the G Watch was announced, but how much have things changed?

There are several differences between the two platforms, but one that has now been brought to light is the device’s physical dimensions. Looking at Apple’s renders and images makes the device look big, but comparing its actual dimensions to Android Wear devices does the opposite. It’s tiny compared to most of what’s available today.

Stainless steel version of Sony’s SmartWatch 3 goes on sale this week, no word yet on price

Site default logo image

The stainless steel version of Sony’s SmartWatch 3 will go on sale around the world “from this week,”says Sony in a blog post.

The new model has the same innards as the original silicon-cased version launched last September, with the same 1.6-inch 320×320 display, 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM. The steel model will also retain the same IP68-standard waterproofing, making it safe even against complete immersion in water for up to 30 minutes …

Sony announces Android Wear-powered SmartWatch 3 & e-ink SmartBand Talk

Site default logo image

Following Samsung’s event earlier today, it’s now Sony’s turn to take the stage at IFA in Berlin and to kick things off the company just announced its brand new Android Wear-powered SmartWatch 3 and a new “SmartBand Talk” with a “curved, always-on- e paper display”:

With GPS and 4GB storage memory built in, SmartWatch 3 supports Android Wear by Google to not only deliver useful information and services based on the user’s latest activities, but also enable communication and entertainment including music to be enjoyed remotely, even when the user is away from their smartphone. Meanwhile, SmartBand Talk is equipped with a curved, always-on e-paper display, to enable hands free calls and voice commands. Its intuitive voice controls enable users to instantly check their Lifelog status with just a glance of their wrist.

This will be Sony’s first Android Wear device following Google’s introduction of the platform earlier this year, and the hardware also gets a bit of an upgrade with a new 1.6-inch 320×320 transflective display. The SmartBand Talk, on the other hand, is more of a life/fitness tracker than a full-fledged smart watch, but also includes a mic and speaker for voice commands and calling. The new wearables will also work with a new Lifelog app:
