Google reportedly purchased $585 million of premium office space in Redwood City

Google reportedly purchased six office buildings from Starwood Capital Group LLC and Blackstone Group LP for $585 million, according to Bloomberg. The facilities are located at the Pacific Shores Center office park in Redwood City, California and are about 11 miles away from the search giant’s Mountain View headquarters.

Sprint now offering 1GB of sharable data for $20 per month

It seems like every major US wireless carrier went double data crazy this month and the madness doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Today, Sprint announced a new low-cost plan targeting casual data users. For $20 a month, the carrier is offering 1GB of sharable data that can be divided among 10 lines through one of its family plans.

Google’s Nexus Player returns to the Play Store for pre-order (update)

About as quick as Google added its Nexus Player to Google Play, the company quickly pulled its new media player from its online store due to issues with the FCC. However, over the weekend, documents for the upcoming Android TV set-top box were spotted in an FCC database and today the search giant has restored Google Play pre-orders.

Motorola to drop affiliation with speaker/headphone maker Sol Republic

Sol Republic, makers of a wide variety of speakers and headphones, announced in August 2013—alongside the announcement of the Moto X—that it would be partnering with Motorola “to redefine the music experience,” and “change the way music fans experience and share music.” 9to5Google has learned, however, this partnership may not have worked out so well. According to people familiar with the partnership, Motorola will soon be dropping its affiliation and contract with Sol Republic.

Former Googler Michelle Lee nominated to lead US patent office

The Obama Administration recently nominated former Google patent counsel lead Michelle Lee to be the new director of the Patent and Trademark Office. The position has been vacant for nearly two years and Lee who has been occupying her time as the current deputy director of the USPTO is now pending Senate approval. The government has been working to reform the US patent process, which has been flooded with firms known as “patent trolls” that milk the system by purchasing old patents and filing frivolous lawsuits against other businesses.

Google published a study today looking at that voice search habits of American smartphone users and to no one’s surprise, teens use the feature more than adults. Samsung planning to sell blistering fast next-gen WiFi devices in 2015

OnePlus’ $40 JBL-made earphones are “coming soon”

AT&T will exclusively carry the HTC Desire EYE this holiday season

Google wants the Supreme Court to get involved in its copyright battle with Oracle

Samsung’s new Protection Plus Mobile Elite warranty covers drops, spills and equipment failure for two years

Samsung is now offering a new protection service for its handsets that will cover select devices against accidental damage, including spills, drops and cracked screens. In addition to accidents, the company’s new Protection Plus Mobile Elite plan covers mechanical and electrical equipment failure for up to two years. Samsung says it will replace a damaged or defective phone within two business days and that it will offer customers three claims for the duration of their service agreement.
