It’s official: Android apps and the Play Store are coming to Chrome

Site default logo image

chrome-os-play-store

It looks like there’s a little tidbit of information that might have been originally planned for the keynote (pulled because of time restraints, maybe?). According to a session description now on the Google I/O website, Google “announced” today that the Google Play Store is coming to Chrome…

Today we announced that we’re adding the best mobile app experiences in the world, Android apps and the Google Play store, to the best browser in the world, Chrome! Come to this session and test your Android apps for Chrome OS. You will get hands on help from our friendly engineers on how to optimize your Android app for Chromebooks. Oh, and we will also be giving the first 50 developers to show up a free Chromebook so they can get a head start bringing their apps to Chrome!

This isn’t exactly surprising as we saw evidence that this was in the cards all the way back in April, but it’s cool nonetheless to see it become official. It looks like this session is going to involve Google showing devs how to test their Android apps on the desktop platform. Also worth noting: the first 50 devs to show up will get a free Chromebook.

We’re on the ground at the event now, so stay tuned as we learn more.

HTC announces that HTC 10, HTC One A9, HTC One M9 will get Android Nougat

Site default logo image

As the release date for Android Nougat approaches (man, it’s going to take a while to get used to not calling it Android N), it’s now on the shoulders of Google’s OEM partners to bring the update to all of our favorite devices. Now, Taiwanese company HTC has announced that Android Nougat is coming to three of its most recent devices, the HTC 10, HTC One A9, and the HTC One M9…

What we expect at Google I/O 2016: Android VR, Android N, Chrome OS, and more

2016-05-16 09_51_32-Attending

Google I/O is right around the corner, and this year’s a bit different. Google’s holding the event closer to home — at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. And everything’s happening outside in the cool breeze of the Bay Area. This is different scenery than the last several years that have  at the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco, and we’re hoping that this means the event itself is going to have some fresh scenery as well.

Among many other things, this year looks like it’s going to be heavy on virtual reality, with a little bit of Android N, Chrome OS, Project Tango, ATAP, and messaging sprinkled in for good measure…

The latest version of Google’s Messenger app lets you view messages on your SIM card

google messenger

Depending on how long you’ve been using cell phones, you might remember the days when you could store SMS text messages on your SIM card. Typically these were just stored there temporarily so that — when switching between phones — you didn’t lose anything sentimental. Now, it appears (via Android Police) that the latest version of Google’s Messenger app lets you manage these SIM card messages…

How-To: Not happy with the new Instagram icon? Swap it with one of these icons on Android

instagram icons

If you’re unhappy with the new Instagram icon, you’re either naturally averse to change or you — perhaps more likely — think that the iOS-inspired glyph and gradient just doesn’t look too hot on your Android home screen. I’m in the latter camp, but no matter your reasoning, there’s always an anonymous internet user ready to solve your problems. In just a few quick steps, you can replace the new unicorn vomit-inspired Instagram icon with one of the above much tamer options…

Google open sources ‘Parsey McParseface’, the ‘world’s most accurate parser’

parsey mcparseface

Google announced today that it has open sourced a neural network system called SyntaxNet. This release, Google says “includes all the code needed to train new SyntaxNet models on your own data.” Perhaps more notably, however is the inclusion of “Parsey McParseface” (no, there doesn’t seem to be any real story behind this name), an English parser that the company has pre-trained to analyze English text…

Nest teams up w/ ARM, Qualcomm, others to open-source Thread networking protocol

openthread_logo

Thread, the low-power mesh network protocol that Alphabet-owned Nest built in tandem with Samsung, ARM, and other companies, is now going open-source. Since it opened membership in October of 2014, the not-completely-open “Thread Group” has grown to have over 30 products. But this OpenThread release takes things a step further in the name of openness…

AT&T’s HTC One M8 and M9 to get Marshmallow starting tomorrow

htc-one-m9_camera

There’s a reason that Marshmallow is only on 7.5% of Android devices — the rollout for the “new” (that’s in parentheses because it was announced almost a year ago now, and its successor is already in developer preview) version of Google’s mobile OS has been horrendously slow. The wait for a lot of phones has finally been coming to an end as of late, however, and now it’s time for the HTC One M8 and M9 on AT&T to get M.

The word comes from good ol’ Mo Versi, VP of Product Management at HTC. He’s the source of most news on the update front for HTC’s myriad of devices. The tweet follows his other most recent update on the update, say that it would have “approval within the next couple weeks.”

And here we are:

The update is set to start rolling out over-the-air tomorrow, so keep an eye out for a popup on your phone. This will likely be a pretty big update, so try to have just as much patience while it’s installing as you have had waiting for it to arrive.

I have to admit, when I first saw Sue Googe’s name in this font, I thought her name was Sue Google. That made me think at first that maybe this had something to do with the ongoing Oracle dispute. But it’s not, and it has nothing to do with Oracle. Her name is just Sue Googe, she’s running for North Carolina’s 4th District seat in the U.S. Congress, and she’s pretty much using Google’s logo to do it…
