Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Samsung uploads its own bend test, Galaxy S6 unsurprisingly fares well (Video)

Following a bend test video released last week showing the Galaxy S6 as actually more fragile than the iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung has today released its own video that is definitely closer to being marketing material. While the other video pushed the iPhone 6 Plus, the HTC One M9, and the Galaxy S6 edge to the absolute limit, this video from Samsung tops the pressure off at 80 pounds to show off the phone’s durability…

The post claims that the device is named “HTC Cello” and runs a version of Sense specifically for cars, currently called Sense Automotive. Test logs from the device show that HTC is looking to integrate its device more with the car than Android Auto currently does.

Twitter says that Periscope for Android is on the way

A week ago, Twitter released its answer to mobile live video broadcasting, Periscope. Mobile live video broadcasting is definitely the latest trend in social networking, and it was initially introduced by Meerkat. But both Periscope and Meerkat chose to release their apps on iOS first (as is sadly a common theme). Now that the public’s interest is growing, though, the need for an Android version is pressing.

Periscope summed it up in their latest blog post, with a couple of answers to common questions, one of them being “When is Android coming?”. Periscope, as expected, answered “Soon! We’re working on it.” This is great news for the many Android users who find it unfair and illogical that both Meerkat and Periscope hit iOS first, considering Android has a much larger hold of the mobile OS market.

Periscope didn’t give a timeline, but Android users can rest assured that Periscope will be available to them sometime in the near future. You can read more about Periscope on their official website. As of now, there’s no word on Meerkat.

PSA: Amazon Prime Instant Video now works on Android tablets

Today, thanks to an update to the Amazon Prime Instant Video app, Amazon is finally allowing users to stream video content on Android tablets (via Android Police). Previously, Prime Instant Video only worked with Android phones, and more recently with Fire devices and iOS devices. The functionality of the app hasn’t changed—users still have to launch Prime Instant Videos from their web browser.

Sadly, support for Chromecast is nowhere in sight, and probably won’t be around any time soon considering how long it has taken Amazon to support Android tablets.

Now watch Amazon Instant Video on your Android phones and tablets. Android tablet customers can search and browse for videos on Amazon.com in their web browser and tap Watch Now to have the Prime Instant Video app begin playing the video.

You can download Amazon Instant Video version 2.0.45.1010 for free from the Amazon App Store (and only the Amazon App Store, sadly).

Galaxy S6 edge gets the bend test, actually fares worse than the iPhone 6 Plus (Video)

The iPhone 6 Plus launch was riddled with endless #bendgate drama, but it looks like the latest flagship from Samsung doesn’t fare much better than Apple’s flagship—at least according to this test. Dozens of YouTube videos have given the latest iPhone line the beating, but now it looks like it’s time for the 2015 round of Android flagships to get tested as well…

Dropbox updates its Mailbox email app with Material Design

Recently, Dropbox updated its Mailbox email app with Material Design, bumping the version number to 2.0.1. Google first introduced Material Design at Google I/O 2014, but it has definitely been a trend that some apps—even those made by companies as large as Dropbox—are still only just now pushing their visual overhauls. The update includes a new FAB (floating action button), rearranges the navigation drawer and action bar to better fit their purposes, and more.

Google+ Stories now showing up as a Google Now card for some users

Google+ has long had an interesting feature called “Stories” that creates a fun timeline out of your uploaded photos, but now users are reporting that these are now showing up in Google Now. The card that’s appearing in some users’ feeds shows a photo preview of the story, an associated date, the number of moments—and tapping this card takes you to the Google+ app to view it in its full form or share it with your followers.

There are a lot of things you need to make sure are in order before you might see one of these cards, but it’s not all too complicated. The hardest part for most tech enthusiasts would probably be going out and taking enough photos for Google+ Stories to have something to work with. If you’ve never used Google+ Stories before, this is how you get started (according to Google’s support page):

Make a story

Stories are automatically created and you’ll be notified when one is made for you. Stories will work best if you:

After you’ve done all of these things, it probably won’t be long before you see the above card in your Google Now feed. On the other hand, if you are receiving this card and you don’t want to or you simply have no interest in Google+ stories at all, Google says you can turn the feature off completely by disabling Auto Awesome.

iFixit tears down the HTC One M9, says it’s easier to open but battery still buried

Site default logo image

iFixit is known for their smartphone teardowns, and today they published their step-by-step walkthrough covering how to disassemble HTC’s latest flagship, the One M9. They’re adding to the device’s already less-than-awesome reception with this guide, though, giving the phone a mediocre 2/10 repairability grade and bashing the way its internals were designed the whole way through.

Motorola testing possible Moto 360 successor codenamed “Smelt”

Site default logo image

Arguably the best smartwatch to come out of 2014 was the Moto 360. The rounded smartwatch received solid reviews and was relatively popular. Since the device’s launch, however, rumors of a successor to the Moto 360 have been few and far between. Phandroid today reports, however, that Motorola appears to be testing a second-gen Moto 360 near its Chicago-based headquarters.

LG unveils new 5.5-inch QHD display for the upcoming G4

LG’s upcoming G4 flagship isn’t set to be unveiled until later this month, but the company this evening has announced one feature of the upcoming device. In a press release, LG Display unveiled a new 5.5-inch QHD LCD panel. LG claims that it has achieved a “quantum jump” in color gamut and brightness with this display, while also and perhaps more importantly, reducing power consumption. The display is also much thinner than any display before, according to LG.

Lollipop now rolling out to Sprint’s Galaxy S5 Sport, coming to T-Mobile’s LG G3 next week

It’s almost time for Google I/O, and that means we’re likely approaching the announcement of the next big version of Android. As usual, though, last year’s major iteration is still just now making its way to plenty of handsets. Today we have word (via Sprint) that its Galaxy S5 should be receiving the update imminently, and T-Mobile representative Des has confirmed (via Twitter) that the update is rolling out to the uncarrier’s LG G3 early next week.

Lollipop’s adoption has been pretty abysmal, and only early last month hit 3.3%. It’s been about a month since those numbers were released, however, so we’re probably at or beyond 5% at this point. As of the most recent data, KitKat actually saw an increase up to 40.9 percent up from February’s 39.7 percent. It wouldn’t be surprising if we still see the Material-packed software still hitting devices long into the summer months.

Google releases new whitepaper detailing Android security upgrades across 2014

Site default logo image

Google has released a new report detailing the security of the Android platform based on data collected from users over the course of last year. The 44-page document can be downloaded as a PDF from Google.

In the report, the company reveals that over a billion devices are currently protected by its Google Play store and accompanying software, which scan over 200 million devices each day for possible security flaws. Of all of the devices scanned, less than 1% had installed potentially harmful software, while devices that exclusively downloaded apps from the Play Store cut that number down to .15%.
