Google Play Services 7.3 brings support for multiple Android Wear devices at once (Video)

Google has—finally—officially announced Google Play Services 7.3 (which first surfaced a couple of weeks ago), bringing several important new features to the company’s Google-powered app support package. Most importantly, the update brings new Android Wear APIs allowing multiple wearables to be connected to a single phone…

Multiple wearable devices can be connected to a user’s handheld device. Each connected device in the network is considered a node. With multiple connected devices, you must consider which nodes receive the messages. For example, In a voice transcription app that receives voice data on the wearable device, you should send the message to a node with the processing power and battery capacity to handle the request, such as a handheld device..

The update also brings the addition of nutrition data to Google Fit, as well as “improvements to retrieving the user’s activity and location, and better support for optional APIs, there’s a lot to explore in this release.” Check out the goofy and entertaining announcement video below, and learn more over at Google’s Android developers blog:

Verizon pushing Android Lollipop to the Samsung Galaxy S4

AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S4 received Android Lollipop earlier this month, but now it looks like it’s Verizon’s turn. As you surely already know, the update brings Material Design, changes to Android’s notifications system, and other improvements:

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce an operating system update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This version brings Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TV’s, cars and wearables. The new material design offers complex animations, 3-D views and improved runtime.

Lollipop is still making its way around (more than 5 months after its first release), and now the time has come for those who have been waiting for the update to hit their Galaxy S4 on Verizon. You can expect the update to appear OTA at some point over the coming days.

LG G4 coming to Sprint in June, T-Mobile offering early access sweepstakes starting today

Carriers have just begun announcing availability of the newly-unveiled LG G4 flagship, and it looks like the device will start hitting the major carriers sometime during the summer. Sprint says the phone will be available in June, while T-Mobile has launched an early-access sweepstakes (but has yet to announce general availability).

We’ll keep this post updated as more carriers announce their plans for the new phone…

Nexus Player now available in 9 new countries

Following the first availability of the Nexus Player in the UK last month, the Nexus Player is now available in 9 new international countries. Among them are Australia, as well as eight different European countries:

Google Glass head Tony Fadell talks Internet of things, proactive technology in recent essay

Tony Fadell, CEO of Nest and head of Google’s Glass division, recently published an essay at The Wall Street Journal highlighting his thoughts on the future of the Internet:

Today, most technology is reactive. We ask a question and get an answer in return. It’s useful, but it’s also limiting. What if we don’t ask the right question? What if we don’t know we need to ask a question in the first place?

In the future, more conversations will happen proactively. In the case of my water-skiing accident, my smartphone could have combined existing information—including GPS data (on a lake, moving quickly), my medical history (four joint-related surgeries), the temperature of the environment (cold) and flexibility data from my fitness tracker—to predict that I was considering water skiing, calculate the odds of my getting injured, and advise me against it before I even got in the water.

The whole essay is wroth a read, with Fadell telling the story of how he tore a hamstring while water skiing and how a more connected Internet could have prevented it. He doesn’t make any comments on Glass, but he does call out Google’s Project Loon in reference to technologies that will help bring an Internet connection to the 4.4 billion people without one.

Nokia publicly refutes reports claiming the company plans to start selling smartphones again

At least one report published last week claimed that Nokia had plans to once again start making and selling smartphones, and another report was published more recently on a Chinese website claiming the same (and also going as far as to quote a Nokia representative on the issue directly). A new statement released by the company on Sunday has essentially called both of these rumors simply untrue…

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive.

Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.

It’s worth noting that this is simply a reiteration of a statement the company previously gave on the matter, and it doesn’t necessarily prove that the company won’t be reentering the smartphone market at some time in the coming years. The company’s “official” plans could change at any moment, and it’s no surprise that the company would defend its official stance on the matter.

Microsoft has the rights to use the Nokia brand until 2016, and that’s precisely the timeframe that reports suggest that a Nokia smartphone will reappear. Considering the company has released the N1 running Android, it’s definitely possible that a future smartphone, should it exist, could run Google’s mobile OS as well.
