Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Now, LG is confirming more details about the phone, only stoking the fire…

Site default logo image

When it comes to smartwatches, apps either make total sense on the wrist, or they don’t. Uber and Lyft are apps that make tons of sense since they can provide useful information at a glance, like smartwatches are designed to do. Now, nearly two years after it was first promised, Uber has finally delivered with an official app for Android Wear 2.0.

LG Watch Sport: First thoughts on LG’s bulky but fully-featured Android Wear 2.0 flagship

Site default logo image

The long-anticipated Google & LG tie-up partner smartwatches have finally hit the physical (and digital) shelves, and now we’ve had a few days to play with and test out the bigger and badder LG Watch Sport in the lead up to our full review. It goes without saying that the Sport is a big watch. It’s the watch that has all the features — bringing you everything that Android Wear 2.0 has to offer — and it’s also the watch that has all the bulk. But there’s more to the story here than just its size…

Verizon introduces new unlimited data plan, $80/mo for ‘unlimited’ 4G data, texts and talk time

Site default logo image

Verizon is bringing back its unlimited data plans. With the new Verizon Unlimited plan launching on Monday, customers can use as much 4G LTE data, send as many texts as they like and talk for as long as they please … for $80 per month. An equivalent uncapped family plan charges $45 per line for 4 people, or $180 monthly.

The ‘unlimited’ plans have a few strings attached, namely hotspot tethering is limited at 10 GB for 4G (will fallback to 3G after) and although data is uncapped, high data users will not be prioritized if the network is congested …

How to opt-in and use Android Instant Apps, currently rolling out to select devices

Site default logo image

Back at Google I/O last summer, we got our first look at Android Instant Apps. Instead of taking the time to download and install a full application, Instant Apps allows users to quickly test out applications straight from the web.

Last month, Google started a limited test of the service and opened up the experience to third-party developers. Based on a Reddit post and our own findings, Instant Apps appears to be now rolling out to Pixel and Nexus users…

Pulse Messenger for Android Wear 2.0 supports fully standalone SMS messaging on your wrist

Site default logo image

One of the big areas of focus in Android Wear 2.0 is allowing the watch to run independent of a connected smartphone, especially when connected to LTE. That’s a big departure from the approach of former versions of the OS, which only tried to extend the reach of your smartphone to the wrist. Now, apps are being updated to reflect the new focus of the OS, and that includes Pulse Messenger.

Sony announces new lineup of Android TV-powered 4K HDR TVs w/ Google Assistant

Android TV hasn’t seen much popularity since its release a few years back, but the platform is slowly gaining ground yet again. Recently, it showed up in LeEco’s collection of affordable 4K TVs, and just last month, Nvidia unveiled its powerhouse Nvidia Shield TV, also powered by Android TV. Now one of the platforms earliest supporters, Sony, is back with a new collection of 4K HDR TVs, all with Android TV under the hood.
