Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Samsung Galaxy S5 Google Play edition may have crept through Bluetooth certification

Site default logo image

An unannounced Samsung device listed as SM-G900FG recently cleared the Bluetooth SIG’s certification, so what might it be? The current model of the Galaxy S5 carries the SM-G900F, which suggests that this mystery gadget could be the Google Play edition of the GS5. Adding support to this theory, last year’s Galaxy S4 was listed as GT-I9505, with it’s Google Play counterpart being referred to as GT-I9505G. So that “G” at the end of this foreign device really stands out.

LG G3 landscape homescreen leak shows off floating widget, tweaked layout

With less than two weeks left to go until the rumored G3 announcement, we won’t have to wait long until we see the device in all of its glory. However, until then, more details continue to leak.

The latest involves the homescreen in landscape orientation. Since the device is expected to have a 5.5″ display, the screen will be closer to that of smaller tablets than that of a small phone. As such, it appears that LG will have certain features reserved for the display when it is in landscape. The above screenshot depicts the incoming call notification acting like a floating widget above the screen.

Samsung’s devices have a similar feature, though it’s unclear how useful this feature may be. Since floating widgets aren’t natively supported in Android, these types of features tend to receive very limited third-party support. Still — we’ll find out the full plan on May 27th!

Flying BA from London’s Heathrow? Your flight now departs from Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5

Site default logo image

Update: It turns out Samsung isn’t exactly rebranding the terminal. iMore received clarification from Heathrow that Samsung is actually just renting regular advertising space available to anyone and using the slogan”Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5″ in its ad:

“Heathrow Terminal 5’s signage and passenger wayfinding has not changed,” a Heathrow spokesperson told iMore. “Samsung have rented advertising space in Terminal 5 with a tongue-in-cheek campaign using the line: ‘Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5’.”

But only for the next two weeks. The Verge reports that Samsung has bought saturation advertising for the Galaxy S5 in Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow airport for a fortnight, and is even referring to the terminal as Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5. While the airport says the terminal hasn’t officially been renamed, a Heathrow spokesman said that they are “relaxed” about Samsung pretending it has.

From Samsung’s description of the campaign, it will certainly be impossible to miss:

Google Now updated with bill pay reminder

Google Now has been updated with a slick new feature that will remind you to pay your bills based on emails in your Gmail inbox. Notifications cards will display a bill’s payee, amount owed, due date and an option to display the email that the information came from. It’s not clear how many bill collectors are supported at this time, however Google Now gets payee information by scanning emails in your Gmail account, so you’ll need to have some type of online correspondence set up with the companies that you wish to pay.

Google Now features typically roll out silently, so there shouldn’t be any update prompts, however it never hurts to make sure that your device is rocking the latest version of the Google Search app.

HTC One mini 2 will reportedly be Verizon’s HTC One Remix

The HTC One mini 2 was announced earlier today, but the Taiwanese phone maker didn’t share any details about US carriers offering the device. However, it appears that the company’s shrunken flagship could be coming to Verizon. According to evleaks, the mini 2 will be available on Big Red’s network as the HTC One Remix. This wouldn’t be the first time an American carrier used a different name for an international device, however we’re not too sure if this tactic is really necessary. Nevertheless, Verizon customers may soon be able to get their hands on what HTC calls the “most grippable Android ever.”

Amazon now accepting pre-orders for Moto G with 4G LTE

After making a cameo appearance on Amazon’s website and officially being announced by Motorola, the Moto G with 4G LTE is now available to pre-order from popular online retailer. Priced at $220, the “universal 4G LTE” handset’s release date is listed as June 3rd. Although the listing suggests that Motorola’s new smartphone will place nice with any wireless service’s LTE setup, we have our concerns and advise that you check with your carrier before placing your order.

However, if your service provider gives you a green light, you’ll have your choice between a black or white 8GB model of the budget-friendly smartphone. An awesome value for an off-contract device, you’ll probably want to act fast as the first run of pre-orders is likely to sell out quickly.

Popular iOS game Monument Valley arrives on Google Play for $3.99

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC1jHHF_Wjo?list=UUadEYJR8MgdLjzmFDuMuzeQ]

Monument Valley, a popular and critically-acclaimed game that was released recently on iOS, is now available for Android devices. The game, available today for $3.99, features beautiful graphics and an interesting storyline.

In Monument Valley you will manipulate impossible architecture and guide a silent princess through a stunningly beautiful world.

Monument Valley is a surreal exploration through fantastical architecture and impossible geometry. Guide the silent princess Ida through mysterious monuments, uncovering hidden paths, unfolding optical illusions and outsmarting the enigmatic Crow People.

While somewhat expensive for an Android game, Monument Valley is well worth the cost. It’s one of the best games I”ve played on a mobile device in the past year. My only complaint is that it’s relatively short — hopefully now that the game is available on both major platforms, the developers can start adding additional levels.

Sony sold 39.1 million smartphones last year, plans to sell 50 million this year

Sony is out today with its earnings report for its fiscal year 2013 ending in March and in it revealed smartphones sales totalling 39.1 million for last year. That’s notable growth for the company’s Xperia smartphones and up from the 33 million units it sold for fiscal year 2012.

For this year, Sony is predicting it will sell approximately 50 million smartphone units.

While Sony noted it experienced “significant increase in sales of smartphones” in addition to a strong launch for PlayStation 4, that unfortunately didn’t help out much overall with the company reporting a net loss of around $1.25 billion US.

Google’s Spell Up game for Chrome will prepare you for the bee (video)

Site default logo image

Let’s face it, most of us are in a love/hate relationship with spellcheck and autocorrect software. However, “misteaks” do happen from time to time, plus classrooms and textbooks can be so boring. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to beef up your vocabulary without being put to sleep? Enter: Spell Up, a voice-activated, web-based spelling game that’s kind of like a mashup between Jenga and Jumble that can be played from Chrome on your desktop or mobile devices. The concept is that you spell things out using your voice to build tower of words and if you happen to run into a stumper, it all falls down. I’ve personally tried it with Chrome for Mac and for the most part things worked nicely. Just be warned that this game doesn’t jive too well with background noise. So be sure to find a quiet place to play and remember to enunciate your letters.

Latest Chromium code carries references to the Google Nexus 6, Nexus 8

Site default logo image

Coming roughly a week after the Nexus 8’s “Flounder” codename was shown off in Chromium’s source code, we now have a reference to the “Nexus 6” (via Florian Kiersch).

The Nexus 6 reference can still be seen on the Code Review page, under the new code section. There is also a reference to the Nexus 8 in the older code. The Nexus 8 is expected to be produced by HTC, as earlier leaks have suggested. The “8” is also likely a reference to the screen size, which would make the Nexus 8 larger than the ASUS-produced Nexus 7. Beyond this, very little is known about the specifications or ETA of the Nexus 8.

The Nexus 6 is also almost entirely a mystery.

Motorola’s Moto Alert app keeps you connected with the people you care about

Site default logo image

If you focused too hard on Motorola’s new and improved handsets, you most likely missed Moto Alert, the company’s newest Android app. Currently exclusive to the Moto E, and in the vein of Google Latitude, this new software is designed to keep you in touch with your close group of friends. The app lets you set up periodic alerts that help the people you care about track your whereabouts. Kind of creepy? Maybe, but it could come in handy if you find yourself in a pinch. Lastly, the app features specific locations like home, work or school that automatically notify your stalkers loved ones of your departure and arrival.
