Nexus 6P buyers get $50 discount on Huawei Watch

Huawei has taken a leaf from Apple’s book with its latest promotion, offering discount on its wearable product when customers order a smartphone. Buyers who order the Nexus 6P direct from Huawei can get $50 off the Huawei Watch when they buy both devices at the same time. That means you’ll be able to get one of this year’s best Android Wear smartwatches for as little as $299.

This deal, of course, is more than likely being launched to counter Apple’s very similar promotion in which customers purchasing an iPhone and an Apple Watch at the same time receive $50 discount in select stores. Overall though, there’s still a huge price difference between buying the new Nexus and buying the new iPhone. Nexus 6P models start at $499, where the iPhone 6s begins at $649. Huawei Watch begins at the same price as the Apple Watch Sport, and is $200+ cheaper than the stainless Apple Watch models.

If you want to take advantage of the deal, head on over to GetHuawei.com and add the Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch to your basket. The $50 discount will be applied automatically. All in, the cheapest combination will set you back about $800, that’s only $50 more than the price of the cheapest 16GB iPhone 6s Plus on its own. That’s really not bad when you’re getting two of the best Android/Android Wear products available right now.

Huawei takes #1 crown from Xiaomi in China after seeing shipments climb 81%

According to data obtained by Canalys (reported by WSJ), Huawei became the largest smartphone maker in China, overtaking Xiaomi during Q3 this year. The smartphone maker’s shipments grew a huge 81% year-on-year, while Xiaomi saw its own shipments drop in the same period. It’s a significant achievement for Huawei, and marks the first time the company has been in top spot in China.

Although Canalys didn’t reveal exact sales figures for the third quarter, it did say that it will release a detailed report at the end of this month. It did note however that Xiaomi’s year-on-year drop in shipments is also a first, suggesting the two companies are moving in opposite directions.

It’s an interesting time for both companies. On the global scene, Huawei has seen its brand become far more recognizable over the past 12 months. Now, with the launch of the Nexus 6P and Huawei Watch, the manufacturer is on the cusp of becoming one of the ‘big brands’ in terms of sales and mindshare among consumers. In stark contrast, Xiaomi relies on sales in its homeland, China for its growth. With Huawei outperforming Xiaomi in China, and the Mi-makers not having a well-known brand outside Chinese borders, it could spell a slowdown in momentum for the once all-conquering Xiaomi. What’s more, Xiaomi is no longer the only company producing competitive phones at low prices. Brands like OnePlus, Oppo and Meizu are all producing similar devices.

While Xiaomi uses Chinese social media to create buzz in its home nation, Huawei has been far more active in its marketing abroad. What’s more, Huawei has its own sub-brand — Honor — which sells great value handsets in Europe offering performance and build quality that’s hard to beat at their price-points. Devices like the Honor 7, which we unboxed recently, offer a near-flagship experience for a fraction of the price.

128GB Nexus 6P now available for pre-order direct from Huawei

For the first time since the Nexus range began, Google announced three storage models of its flagship Android range. The Huawei Nexus 6P would feature 32GB, 64GB and 128GB options priced at $499, $549 and $649 respectively. But, when pre-ordering the 6P, the highest storage option was a little tricky to get hold of. Availability in the US was already restricted to just Google Store and Huawei’s online store, and the latter only had 32GB and 64GB options in two colors.

While Huawei still only sells the aluminum and graphite options, you can now order either with 128GB internal storage. Customers pre-ordering the highest capacity model will need to wait until the end of November before their device arrives, but, there’s comfort in knowing that the highest storage Nexus 6P still costs less than the lowest storage iPhone 6s Plus. If getting the phone early is all that matters to you, ordering the 32GB and 64GB model gets you an early November delivery. If you really, really need it as soon as possible and don’t care about how much it costs, there are some overpriced listings on eBay already.

It is worth noting that there’s a significant difference between ordering from GetHuawei.com and from Google’s online store, in that the latter will get you a $50 Play Store coupon, while former won’t. Certainly something to consider.

Huawei Watch charging cradle now available on the Google Store

You can now purchase a replacement charging cradle for the Huawei Watch on the Google Store for $39.99. The accessory is listed as stock and will leave the warehouse within 1-2 business days. Shipping for the product is free, as well.

The charging cradle is the first accessory for the Huawei Watch to become available via the Google Store. The watch itself went up for pre-order on the Google Store at the beginning of last month and began shipping not too far after.

The Huawei Watch features a 1.4-inch screen with a 400 x 400 resolution, coming out to 286 pixels per inch. It sports 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of on-board storage, a gyroscope, barometer, and accelerometer, all packed inside a 42mm case and powered by a 300mAh battery.

Yesterday, when Google announced that pre-orders for the Nexus 6P would be opening immediately, it only mentioned its own online Google Store as the place to buy the latest flagship pure Android smartphone. That left us to assume that rumors of it only being available direct through Google were true. Except, they weren’t. As well as being able to order it on an installment plan from Project Fi, Huawei will also be selling the Nexus 6P direct from its own GetHuawei.com store.

There are some limitations to ordering it from Huawei. Currently, the manufacturer only lists two colors and two storage options of each as available to pre-order. GetHuawei only has the 32GB and 64GB models of the Aluminum and Graphite devices. There’s no ‘frost’ or 128GB option. Prices are the same as Google: $499 and $549 for the 32GB and 64GB models respectively, with an estimated shipping date of ‘late October’, similar to Google’s own ‘4-5 weeks’.
