Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Hands-on with Toast’s real-wood cover for the Google Pixel/Pixel XL [Gallery]

I love changing up the way my smartphones look, and the Pixel is a prime candidate since its design is, well, less than beautiful. Lately, I’ve been trying out a handful of skins for the Pixel XL, including some from dbrand and Colorware. Recently, though, I’ve been trying a real-wood cover from Toast, and it’s a pretty interesting departure from your average vinyl skin.

Android Nougat with EMUI 5.0 starts rolling out to the Honor 8 tomorrow [Update]

Site default logo image

The Honor 8 was one of our favorite affordable smartphones of 2016, or at least it would’ve been if it hadn’t launched with Huawei’s infamous EMUI software layer. Despite the polished hardware, the same couldn’t be said about the software. Now, Honor is looking to change that with an update to EMUI 5.0.

Update: Honor has adjusted the rollout date to February 11th.

Android Nougat is rolling out to Nvidia Shield tablets over the next few days

Site default logo image

For the most part, Nvidia has been pretty good about keeping its Android devices up to date. Just a couple of weeks after debuting the fantastic new Nvidia Shield TV, it updated the former model with that new software. Today, that trend continues with a major update to its collection of tablets, with Android Nougat rolling out over the coming days.

These are the four best alternatives to the Google Now Launcher

Site default logo image

One of Android’s greatest strengths is the ability to customize the experience in essentially any way you would like. One of the easiest, though, is with a custom launcher. A favorite for many over the past few years has been Google’s own Google Now Launcher, however, the company has recently revealed that the launcher won’t be around too much longer, leaving many fans with no immediate alternative.

LG Watch Style & Watch Sport review roundup: evolutionary software, standard hardware

Site default logo image

Google and LG announced the LG Watch Style and Watch Sport this morning, and there are plenty of reviews for the new smartwatches already pouring in. We’ve yet to get our hands on units (our reviews are on the way!), but so far it looks like the consensus is about what I expected: There’s lots of new useful features in the latest — albeit delayed — version of Android Wear, but in a variety of ways, these watches don’t show it off as well as they could…

Google has today released its monthly set of statistics regarding Android version distribution. Like in previous months, we haven’t seen any major drops or gains here, but we are seeing good progress across the board, with new versions like Nougat and Marshmallow seeing gains, and older versions taking slight drops.

Android Nougat is now available for the ZTE Axon 7 w/ Daydream VR in tow

Site default logo image

ZTE’s Axon 7 was one of the most popular “affordable flagships” of 2016, and for good reason. Packing top of the line specs, premium hardware, and useful features into a price tag under $400 was nothing short of impressive. However, ZTE has been just a little slow in updating the device. Now, the company has finally released Android Nougat for the Axon 7.

‘Designed with our friends at Google’ might be the Nexus brand’s de facto replacement

Site default logo image

It wasn’t that long ago that I thought the two smartwatches Google is set to introduce were actually going to be solely Google-branded, just like the Pixel phones. It would make sense with Google’s new hardware division — which is surely but slowly becoming a more serious business — that the Mountain View company would go all-in on smartwatches, offering a top-to-bottom lineup just like Apple.

It very well may have been the plan at one point for these to be “Nexus” watches, but today we learned exactly how they’re not going to be Nexus watches. We already knew that they would be LG-branded, but now we know where the Google comes in: a “Designed with our friends at Google” label. At the very least, this is interesting to consider in the broader realm of Google & OEM partnerships…

We are less than a month out from MWC and LG’s event where we expect them to unveil the G6. Unsurprisingly, the closer we get to the event, the more information about the phone leaks out. The latest rumor — which comes from Evan Blass — is that LG will be launching the G6 in the U.S. on April 7, a month after it releases in South Korea…

Comment: Lenovo’s new Yoga A12 Android tablet is just begging to be a Chromebook

Site default logo image

Earlier today Lenovo unveiled a new version of its Yoga Book tablet from last year, the Yoga A12. The new larger, more affordable machine offers lesser specifications, but with the added screen real-estate and larger footprint the update makes total sense. My biggest question? Why is this not a Chromebook?

Verizon appears to be giving free Daydream VR headsets to Pixel owners following shipment delays

Site default logo image

Right from the start, Google had inventory issues and delayed Pixel orders because the company hadn’t expected the high demand for its smartphones. The delays have been so bad, in fact, that rumors started going around that Google had even stopped production. While this obviously isn’t true, Verizon has started to give away Daydream View headsets as an apology to customers who had their shipments delayed…
