Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Review: Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium packs a 4K display, but is it worth it? [Video]

Meet the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. Sony’s smartphone lineup is known for a couple of things that make it popular: incredible cameras and waterproof durability. And it’s safe to say that both of those boxes are checked here. But this time around, Sony added a new category: stupidly high resolution. The Z5 Premium packs the first 4K display on a smartphone, but is it all worth the hype?

Oppo Advent Calendar game will give customers up to €80 discount on R7-series phones

Chinese smartphone manufacturer, Oppo, has revealed its plans for the holiday season. For seven days between December 7th and December 13th, customers will be able to visit Oppo’s virtual advent calendar and claim a new badge every single day. The more different badges you have by the end of the seven days, the more discount you get on an Oppo R7 series purchase from the Oppo Style online store.

Users who play every day and end up with 7 different badges will have a chance to win one of two Oppo R7s handsets. The first two players to collect 7 will be the winners, so you’ll have to be as early as possible to be in with a shot. If you end up with 5 different badges, Oppo will award you an €80 voucher to use on OppoStyle.com. Players with 3 badges will get a €40 voucher and players with just one badge get €20. Those who share the game on social media using the #OPPOXmas hashtag will be entered to win a selfie stick or VOOC battery charger.

Rules and links the game will go live on December 7th with details on which regions are eligible for prizes.

Report(s): Samsung Galaxy Note 5 finally set to get European launch in January

Back when Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Note 5 and its dual-curved partner, the S6 Edge Plus, it disappointed a lot of hopeful customers by announcing the S-Pen-equipped phablet would not be released in Europe. At least, not immediately. According to two separate reports, Samsung has plans to finally bring the Note 5 to mainland Europe and the UK next month.

Google launches Unity plugin to help developers make Chromecast-compatible games

Google has today launched the Google Cast Remote Display plugin for Unity, in hopes that developers will now be able to more easily bring their mobile games to the TV. This is the same plugin that many games on the Play Store — including Monopoly Here & Now, Risk, and more — already use…

Today we launched the Google Cast Remote Display plugin for Unity to make it easy to take your Unity games to TVs. The Google Cast Remote Display APIs use the powerful GPUs, CPUs and sensors of your Android or iOS mobile device to render a local display on your mobile device and a remote display on your TV.

Google says that, as of today, developers can download the new Remote Display plugin for Unity from both GitHub and the Unity Asset Store.

Developers with preexisting Unity games simply need to import the Remote Display package to their project, add the CastRemoteDisplayManager prefab, and configure cameras for the local and remote displays. More detailed information can be found at Google’s Developers Blog.

Sketchy Pixel C rumor predicts December 8 retail launch for the powerful all-metal Android tablet

According to a report by Dutch-language tech site, Tweakers, Google is planning to start selling the Pixel C Android tablet from December 8th on the Play Store. The site claims that it will be offering both the 32GB and 64GB variants of Pixel C in the Netherlands on that date, suggesting we’ll see a global launch next week too. If true, it’d be highly unlikely that Google would release a product in the Netherlands before major markets like the US, UK, Germany and France.

While we can’t vouch for the site’s information, it certainly fits in with Google’s plans to launch it by the end of the year. Pricing will purportedly be €499 and €599 respectively for the 32GB and 64GB models, while the keyboard will allegedly cost €169 in Europe. In the US, prices will be $499, $599 and $149 for the two tablets and keyboard.

The Pixel C is Google’s first attempt at making its own tablet hardware and, in many ways, replaces the Nexus tablet range. While we may yet see another Nexus tablet, Google has seen a need to make its own powerful, pure Android tablet with a detachable keyboard to compete with the likes of Apple and Microsoft. Google’s all-metal Pixel C features a 10.2-inch screen boasting a resolution of 2560×1800 pixels and a quad-core processor made by NVIDIA. There’s also 3GB RAM, full USB Type-C support and it runs Android Marshmallow.

The keyboard has its own built-in battery and connects to the tablet via Bluetooth, and will come in two different finishes: Leather and Aluminum.

Invites gone forever: Anyone can buy a OnePlus 2 from December 5th

OnePlus has just announced what many hopeful owners have been wanting to hear for a long time: From December 5th (and forever), anyone will be able to buy the OnePlus 2 without an invite. The company’s co-founder, Carl Pei announced the news on the company’s official forums today. Customers looking to buy will only have to hit OnePlus’ store page and select to buy, and won’t be required to enter a code.

From the beginning, OnePlus has maintained that its invite system was necessary when the company started out to help it manage inventory, and ensure it didn’t have tons of unsold stock lying around eating its margins. While the OnePlus 2’s invite system was comfortably better than the OPO’s, it still left customers frustrated. But, as we’ve seen in the past, the company has been open about its own shortcomings, and is always aiming to improve all aspects of its operations.

The invite system has been crucial to letting us scale our operations and has given our fans a unique way to share OnePlus with the people in their lives. But we are always trying to enhance the OnePlus experience for you and taking risks to push ourselves and show real improvements. That’s why we’re making the OnePlus 2 invite-free … forever!

As well as making the OP2 invite-free forever, OnePlus has a few discounts and offers going live on the same day. Between December 5-7, the OnePlus X is also going to be invite-free too, while a bunch of accessories will be discounted. OnePlus 2 StyleSwap covers (like the ones we featured in a video) are 50% off, some OnePlus One accessories are 90% off while all other accessories will be subject to 10% discount.

Google responds to student privacy concerns: ‘We are confident that our tools comply with both the law and our promises’

Yesterday it was revealed that a privacy group (EFF) had a filed a complaint with the FTC claiming that Google “deceptively tracks students’ internet browsing”. Specifically, the group claims that Google is breaching a Student Privacy Pledge that it signed in January. One issue with Chrome OS in particular is Chrome Sync, a feature which enables users to have the same bookmarks, logins and other data across various devices with the Chrome Browser installed. As you would expect, it didn’t take long for Google to deny claims of wrongdoing…

Android Marshmallow update for unlocked HTC One M8 rolling out today

If you’re an HTC One M8 owner, you’ll be glad to know that the Android Marshmallow update is rolling out from today to unlocked devices. Mo Versi, the company’s VP of Product Management confirmed the rollout on his personal Twitter handle yesterday afternoon.

[tweet https://twitter.com/moversi/status/672105656489349120 align=’center’]

Sadly, if you’re using a carrier-locked version, or if you’re in a market outside the Americas, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Those devices almost always take more time to be updated as carrier approval and testing needs to be done before pushing the software out to users:

[tweet https://twitter.com/urbanstrata/status/672114884520226816 align=’center’]

It’s impressive that HTC has managed to start rolling out Marshmallow updates so soon after the software became officially available. Even the virtually stock Motorola handsets are yet to receive the official update, although they are currently subject to software soak testing for some users.

HTC, of course, was the first Android OEM to release a non-Nexus smartphone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. The One A9 was announced a few weeks ago and makes full use of Google’s latest mobile operating system, including the baked-in fingerprint sensor support and Android Pay, Doze mode and more. No other manufacturer has managed to do that yet.

Since the One A9 was announced we’ve seen several new handsets including the likes of Samsung’s new A-series, Huawei’s Mate 8 and the Oppo R7s among many others, all of which have (or will) hit the market running a version of Android Lollipop. HTC, clearly then, is ahead of the curve with software updates and that’s something to be applauded.

New emojis coming to Android next week, Nexus devices to be updated first

Android head Hiroshi Lockheimer has announced on Twitter this evening that Android devices will soon support the latest set of Unicode emojis. Lockheimer confirmed in his tweet that an update will begin rolling out to Nexus devices next week with the changes, while Google has also shared the fonts and tech details with other OEMs so they can update as well.

HTC rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the unlocked HTC One (M8) ‘within 24 hours’

Let’s just say that HTC doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to software updates, but here’s a glimmer of hope: According to HTC’s Mo Versi (the same guy that announces pretty much all of HTC’s smartphone software updates), the unlocked HTC One (M8) should be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow very soon.

Specifically, Mo says “testing has been complete,” for the new software and that “the update for Marshmallow will be sent out within 24 hours.”

You might be surprised that the M9 didn’t get the update first, and we’re in the same boat (and so is pretty much everyone else on Twitter). Mo did clarify, however, that the update should be coming to the M9 soon. “Will advise once testing is complete,” he says in reply to one user.

Android will be the main loser in the evolving tablet market, predicts IDC, but remain overall market leader

Market intelligence company IDC predicts that the worldwide tablet market will continue to decline, with the category as a whole falling 8.1% over the course of this year – and Android seeing the greatest drop in share over the next few years. Android will, however, remain the market leader through 2019.

The greatest growth, it suggests, will come in the so-called ‘detachables’ segment – tablets with detachable keyboards – where Windows is predicted to see substantial growth …

Motorola is now soak testing Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition

Motorola’s David Schuster recently came out on Google+ to mention that the company is now soak testing Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Moto X Pure Edition:

I’m pleased to announce that today we are starting the soak test period of Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade for the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd Gen) in the US. We will monitor the soak for next week and with good results, proceed to full launch.

The soak test period, which means that certain devices will be receiving the update early to test its reliability, will last about a week. Assuming nothing goes wrong, a full launch will follow.

Motorola is known as being one of the fastest third-party manufacturers to update their devices to the latest version of Android, and it seems they’re maintaining that reputation this year.

The latest Android distribution numbers (from last month) show Android 6.0 Marshmallow on just 0.3% of devices, and that data is expected to be updated at some point today without much improvement.

Samsung Galaxy A5 design and specs revealed in TENAA listing

Rumors about Samsung’s next mid-range metal smartphone have been circling the web for a few months now. While most has been speculation and sketchy leaks, the device has finally made an official pre-launch appearance on TENAA, China’s equivalent of the FCC. As usual, the listing comes with the customary front, back and side profile images as well as a collection of important specifications…

Google Admin app for Android updated w/ easier user management

Google today has updated its Google Admin mobile app with a handful of enhancements that admins will greatly appreciate. The update makes it much easier to manage users and groups, further reducing the necessity for admins to always be near a full-fledged computer.

The first new feature is the ability to import a contact from their contact list and have all of that user’s information be auto-filled into the “Add user” form in the Admin mobile application. The information can then be edited if needed, but it makes it much easier to quickly add new users to your team.

The second major new feature is the ability to quickly change a user’s role in a group and to more easily remove them all together. Now when you tap on the member of a group, you’ll see to new options to quickly “Change Role” of a member or “Remove Member” with just a few taps.

The update to the Google Admin app on Android is rolling out now to users. The latest version is available on the Play Store now.

• Integration with your Contacts App – Create new users by importing your existing contacts directly from the App.
• Better Group membership management – Quickly change a member’s role or remove them from the group.
• Bug fixes – Resolved issues related to app crashes and minor UI elements.
