Nine Inch Nails frontman and Apple Music exec Trent Reznor says YouTube ‘built on stolen content’

reznor

Update: A YouTube spokesperson responded to us with the following statement: The overwhelming majority of labels and publishers have licensing agreements in place with YouTube to leave fan videos up on the platform and earn revenue from them. Today the revenue from fan uploaded content accounts for roughly 50 percent of the music industry’s YouTube revenue. Any assertion that this content is largely unlicensed is false. To date, we have paid out over $3 billion to the music industry – and that number is growing year on year.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has told Billboard that YouTube is built on stolen content.

Personally, I find YouTube’s business to be very disingenuous. It is built on the backs of free, stolen content and that’s how they got that big. I think any free-tiered service is not fair. It’s making their numbers and getting them a big IPO and it is built on the back of my work and that of my peers. That’s how I feel about it. Strongly.

Google wants Apple Music to play on Chromecast Audio … but Apple is silent for now

chromecast-audio

During the announcement of Google’s Chromecast Audio yesterday, the company made sure to mention that music subscription leader Spotify will soon be one of the many music streaming services supported by the platform. With many Apple Music subscriptions renewing (or not renewing) and Google unveiling a $35 dongle that retrofits our existing home speakers with Wi-Fi, some are rightfully wondering: What about Apple Music?

According to statements from one Googler (via TrustedReviews), Google has no bar on any platform joining in on supporting Chromecast, and the Mountain View company has already directly asked Apple to play along…

Talking Schmidt: Makes thinly-veiled attack on Apple Music as elitist and out of date, scores own goal

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google parent company Alphabet, has made a thinly-veiled attack on Apple Music in a BBC op-ed on artificial intelligence. He described human-curated music selections as a decade out of data and an elitist approach.

A decade ago, to launch a digital music service, you probably would have enlisted a handful of elite tastemakers to pick the hottest new music.

Today, you’re much better off building a smart system that can learn from the real world – what actual listeners are most likely to like next – and help you predict who and where the next Adele might be …

Apple Music vs. Google Play – Which is the best streaming service?

IMG_5697

Until recently, Google’s Play Music streaming feature was one of the company’s few markets where it didn’t face strong, direct competition from Apple. But just like everything the Cupertino-company does, it has taken its own sweet time to finally launch a product we always knew was coming. And as always, the company claims it has done things differently, with a more human element.

Android users can unofficially listen in to Apple’s Beats 1 radio (for now)

Site default logo image

beats-1-android

Apple is promising an Android version of its Apple Music app sometime in the fall, providing free access to its Beats 1 radio station and to its subscription-based streaming music service. But you don’t need to wait until then to check out Beats 1, thanks to the discovery of some unofficial web streams.

Developer Benjamin Rumble found an unencrypted HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) URL for the service and embedded it in a webpage on his personal site. You can also access the URL directly. Since then, others have found additional URLs …

Apple Music is coming to Android, and it’s launching this fall

apple-music

Apple today announced its self-branded music streaming service, and the Cupertino company also mentioned that—for the first time ever—it is launching an Android app made in-house. While the Beats Music app has remained on the Google Play Store since the Apple acquisition, the fruity company didn’t create it and has barely updated it and mostly ignored its existence. Now, though, Apple is planning to launch an official Android app made for Apple Music to be released later this year—specifically in the “fall”.
