Google Calendar for iPhone adds Drive integration, new interactive notifications, more

Google Calendar is out with an improved version for the iPhone today with version 1.1. The list of changes is short but the improvements should be welcome.

The update includes integration with Google Drive so users can connect files with events on your calendar. Interactive notifications now include the ability to open directions from alerts or respond to guests via email. Finally, users can now see week numbers next to the calendar and more entries using the week view.

Google Calendar for iPhone is available for free on the App Store. Version 1.1 follows the initial launch in mid-March. Full release notes below:

Google Play Music adds free, ad-supported radio feature ahead of Apple Music launch

Site default logo image

Google announced today that it is adding a free tier to its Google Play Music service. The new feature provides non-subscribers with what Google is describing as an ad-supported radio option with curated stations. Google Play Music’s radio option will be available for users in the United States at launch with availability on the web starting today and support on iOS and Android following soon. Similar to Apple’s approach with Apple Music, Google says it has “music experts” creating these “curated” playlists:

Google Docs now supports more image types when converting Microsoft Office files

docs

Google has announced today that it is expanding the types of images it supports when converting Microsoft Office files to Google Docs. Previously, supported image file types included JPEG, PNG, EMF, and WMF. Now, a greater number of less common image types are also supported. Google Docs can now convert larger images, more file formats (specifically including TIFF), and images with color profiles other than RGB.

Starting today, larger images, images in less common formats (like TIFF), and images with non-RGB color profiles (like CMYK), can also be imported to and exported from the Google Docs editors on the web successfully. Check out the Help Center for more information on converting files in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

This is a useful update if you commonly find that your Microsoft Office documents aren’t being properly converted when moving them to Google Docs — or, likewise, when you’re exporting them to use in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. You can head over to the Google Apps blog to read the original post, and Google sends you to the Help Center if you need more information about importing and exporting documents.

Transfer playlists from Spotify to Play Music with PyPortify

Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 3.05.18 PM

It may seem like a first world problem (it is), but one of the biggest reasons why I’ve stayed using Spotify for so long is the time and effort it can take to move all my playlists and saved songs across music services. Where a content management service like WordPress allows you to export all your blog posts and take them elsewhere, since you don’t own the songs you listen to in Spotify, Google Play Music All Access, or the countless other music streaming services, they understandably don’t provide any way to export that music. As a result I justified not giving any other service a fair shake by saying I’d only switch if the alternative were at least 10x better.

I set out today to give Play Music All Access that fair shake and thought I’d share how I transferred my music over without much hassle.

The answer to all my problems (and maybe yours, too) was in the form of PyPortify, a port of a similar (free) app called Portify that was released back in 2013 but stopped working for most people at some point before the beginning of 2015. PyPortify is pretty simple to install and use, but for this post I’m just going to share how to do it on Mac OS X – it’s not too much different on Linux, and instructions for Windows, Linux, and Mac are available on the GitHub source page.

Update: I did not have Xcode installed when I completed this install, but if you do, you may need to run it and install updated components before you’ll be able to go through this tutorial.

First you’ll need to install Homebrew. It’s a popular command-line application that makes it easy to download and install applications and packages for your Mac – like if you, say for example, need the Python programming language to run an app that was written in it (like PyPortify). Open the Terminal application, paste in this command, and hit <Return>:

ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)”

Once that’s finished installing and the blinking cursor returns, paste and hit <Return> on the following:

brew install python

Finally, when you’re done with both of those, paste and <Enter> this command:

pip install pyportify

This should just take a minute or two to download and install, and once it’s finished paste and <Enter> this:

pyportify

In your terminal you should get something back like this:

Now open a browser to http://localhost:3132

Don’t close your terminal window. Paste that URL as it is in your terminal – including the http and the numbers at the end – in your browser and hit <Return>. You’ll get a site which looks like this:

Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 2.43.23 PM

Click “Get started” and you’ll be asked to log into your Google account, so it can have access to your Play Music account. What you’ll want to do here is go to the My Account dashboard for your Google account and create an app password (click here for that). Once you’re done transferring all your music to All Access you can revoke this password so PyPortify doesn’t have access any longer. Next you’ll have to log into your Spotify account. If you sign into it with your Facebook account, those credentials will work just fine, and Facebook has app passwords as well that you can generate and use for PyPortify.

Finally once all of that is done, you’ll see a page like this:

Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 2.46.40 PM

Here you get to choose all the Spotify playlists you want to transfer to Google Play Music, just click the check box to the right of each playlist you want to transfer. Once you start the transfer, you’ll see a page that says it’s transferring but the “Found,” “Not Found,” and “Filtered Karaoke” numbers might not be moving up from zero. But go back to your open terminal and…

Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 2.53.14 PM

It’s working! Navigate to Google Play Music, open the left-hand drawer, scroll down to the playlists section, and you should see the playlists you chose to transfer starting to show up.

Of course not all music that’s available on Spotify may be available on Google Play Music All Access, but I’ve found that the overlap is pretty close. Also, using PyPortify is technically against the terms of service of both services, so do it at your own risk, but we haven’t heard of anything bad happening as a result of using this service. Enjoy!

UK tax authorities adopting Google Apps, offshore data storage and all

HMRC-sign

The UK tax body, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has completed a successful trial of Google Apps and will be rolling out the service to more of its staff throughout the year, reports The Register.

HMRC has 70,000 staff, and as such will be Whitehall’s first mass deployment of Google’s cloud services […]

David Fitton, head of public sector sales for Google UK, wrote on Linkedin: “The acceptance by HMRC that they can store official information offshore in Google data-centres represents a major change and endorsement of Google’s approach to managing sensitive information.”

HMRC said that it had “carefully considered the protection of customer information” when making the decision …

The new ‘Google Photos’ is a convincing reason to give Google your entire photo library

Site default logo image

Google Photos was just announced this week, and—assuming you’re okay with Google having all of your photos on their servers—it’s a great new way to keep all of your life moments safely stored in one place. This isn’t just a redesigned mobile app. It’s a complete rethinking of how Google approaches its photo storage offerings, and it already has me convinced to just throw every picture I’ve ever taken to their cloud…

Google and Comedy Central are offering one free episode from 12 shows on Google Play

Google-Play-Altered

Memorial Day in the United States is a time for remembering and celebrating, relaxing and unwinding, and an extra day off from work to spend with friends and family. Google wants to make sure you don’t have to waste any of it flipping through TV channels to find something that’s on to watch, which is why the company has partnered up with Comedy Central to offer 12 episodes of 12 different Comedy Central original shows absolutely free on Google Play.

Some of the shows are more recent, like Key & Peele, while others are more of Comedy Central classics, like Strangers with Candy from the 90’s. My personal favorites from the selection are Key & Peele and Tosh.0, but maybe Reno 911! is your sort of thing. One episode from each show is free and then you can pay for the season it’s from to see more. The sale page is here.

Google admits Hangouts doesn’t use end-to-end encryption, conversations can be wiretapped

Site default logo image

hangouts

Following a Reddit AMA on government surveillance, Google has admitted that while it does encrypt Hangouts conversations, it does not use end-to-end encryption, meaning the company itself can tap into those sessions when it receives a government court order requiring it to do so. This contrasts with the end-to-end encryption used by some services, like Apple’s FaceTime, which cannot be tapped even by the company offering the service.

Motherboard noted that Google has always been vague about the level of encryption offered for Google Hangouts, and that when pressed by principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union Christopher Soghoian, the company would say only that messages were encrypted “in transit” …

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 1.08.51 PM

comScore today released a new U.S. smartphone manufacturer and platform market share report for the three month period ending in March. The data suggests that while the continued strength of iPhone 6 adoption has resulted in market share gains for Apple, Android is still the most popular smartphone platform in the United States.

During the measured period, comScore reports that 187.5 million people in the United States owned smartphones, which equates to 77 percent of the total population. Of that, Apple was the most popular OEM (original equipment manufacturer) with 42.6 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers (up 1% from December), followed by Samsung with 28.3 percent market share (down 1% from December), and LG taking third place with 8.4 percent (up 0.4% from December).

But now, according to a report from Yahoo Finance, Google is adding FDIC insurance to the money you keep in your Wallet Balance by storing your funds in various FDIC-insured banking institutions…

Google appears to be developing a teleconferencing tool called GMeet

Site default logo image

First noticed by Florian Kiersch on Google+, Google appears to be testing a new meetings service. Google Meetings, also referred to as GMeet, appears to allow users to schedule and join teleconference calls with one click. Instead of having to dial into a teleconference call, one user could create a meeting topic in GMeet, then invite everyone else to the call. People who received an invite would be able to then join the call with a single click.

Google Code is joining the Google product graveyard, project creation disabled today

google_code

Google has announced today that it is shutting down its project hosting service, Google Code. Its main competitor GitHub has long been seen as the ubiquitous code and project management platform, and even Google itself has long been moving its own open source projects “to meet developers where they are.” Google says that project creation on Google Code is already disabled…

Beginning today, we have disabled new project creation on Google Code. We will be shutting down the service about 10 months from now on January 25th, 2016. Below, we provide links to migration tools designed to help you move your projects off of Google Code. We will also make ourselves available over the next three months to those projects that need help migrating from Google Code to other hosts.

In August of this year, Google Code will become read-only, meaning users will not be able to edit or change existing projects. As the name suggests, however, users will be able to read and view project source until January 25, 2016 when the project hosting service will be closed completely. If you have a project that needs to be migrated off of Google Code, the company suggests you use the Google Code to GitHub exporter tool.
