What is Google Stadia?

Stadia was a streaming service that leverages Google’s vast cloud infrastructure to deliver AAA and indie games alike over the web without needing specialized gaming hardware. This ambitious effort follows in the footsteps of the company’s other large platforms: Search, Chrome, and Android. Google hopes to bring this form of entertainment to the next billion gamers by removing various limitations that exist today.

What happened to Google Stadia?

In September 2022, Google announced the closure of its Stadia platform. The cloud gaming platform later shut down on January 19, 2023. Refunds were issued to customers for the cost of games, add-ons, and Stadia hardware such as the Stadia Controller.

Most games on Stadia were already available on other platforms, and the few Stadia exclusives have mostly expanded to other platforms as well.

In April 2023 it was confirmed that Phil Harrison, the former head of Google Stadia, had left the company.

[Update: Statement] Google is exaggerating the quality of Stadia’s games, and it’s not okay

Google Stadia is an ambitious project that, unfortunately, is off to a rough start, thanks to lofty expectations, head-scratching decisions, and annoying hiccups. However, looking past most of that, the biggest problem that Stadia currently faces is that Google has been heavily exaggerating about the quality of 4K games on the service.

PSA: Destiny 2 is down on all platforms, not just Google Stadia

Today is the first Friday following the launch of Google Stadia, and no doubt there are people who are diving into Stadia Pro’s best (in this author’s biased opinion) free game, Destiny 2. However, Destiny 2 is not currently playable on Google Stadia, or any other platform for that matter, as server issues are currently plaguing the game with error code “stork.”

Opinion: Google needs to allay Stadia concerns — its botched launch does the opposite

google stadia controller

The initial reviews of Google Stadia are out as of yesterday, and the consensus seems to be that it works pretty well, actually. But that technical accomplishment is overshadowed by the fact that many of the service’s notable feature promises are half-baked, and others just aren’t here yet. This functional Google Stadia beta is only raising concerns about the platform at a time when it already has little room for messaging error.
