Android grew its market share in China by a massive 9.3 points year-on-year, reports Kantar, hitting a commanding 83.2% in the quarter ending January 2017.
Growth was slower in Europe, where it grew 1.4% to hit 74.3%. The platform saw a further fall in the USA, where it dropped 1.8 points, but remains comfortably ahead of Apple’s iOS at 56.4% of the market.
Things are getting interesting when it comes to emerging smartphone brands, says Kantar …
Following its press conference at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, Huawei was kind enough to hand out some units of the just-announced P10 smartphone, one of which I got ahold of. I have been using it ever since, and coming from a Pixel (and a tradition of vanilla or near-stock Android devices before that) I thought I couldn’t help but feel strongly about the EMUI. That, however, didn’t’ turn out to be the case.
So here are a few things I liked about it, and some that, instead, didn’t really click…
So here’s the thing with the P10: it is a good phone. Maybe even a great one by some standards. But I know that after having played just a few hours with it, which — to me — immediately signaled something. Remember when I talked about the OnePlus 4, how the “smartphone 1.0” era was over and that manufacturers really had to step up their game to bring something genuinely exciting to the table?
Well that, my friends, is not the case here. The P10 is definitely a 1.0 era smartphone. But whether that’s good or bad, of course, will depend on you…
Huawei has today announced the Huawei Watch 2, its followup to the largely-successful Huawei Watch which originally launched in 2015. But the Chinese company is actually launching two successors to the Huatch today: a sportier model with silicone straps and LTE, and a “Classic” model that will serve the crowd looking for something more like its predecessor…
As MWC goes into full swing, we’re watching announcement after announcement. Today, February 26th, there are quite a few events on our calendar, and one of those is from Huawei.
Honor has today taken the wraps off of two new smartphones for China: the mid-range Honor 8 Lite and the flagship-level Honor V9. While there’s no word yet on a US release for either of these devices, today’s announcements might at the very least gives us an idea of what the Chinese company might be bringing to the US in the future…
Barcelona’s famous fair, the Mobile World Congress, is just around the corner. As always, (almost) all the big names in mobile will join the party to show the latest and greatest coming out of their R&D. And while Samsung’s absence may represent a hit for the general vibe of the coming days, there will certainly be no shortage of new products and announcements.
So let’s dig through them a bit…
MWC kicks off in a matter of days, and we’re expecting a lot from this year’s event. We’ll see new flagships like the LG G6, new tablets from Samsung, a new smartwatch from ZTE, and much more. However, one of the other devices we’re expecting to see comes from Huawei, the P10, which has just leaked yet again.
Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress is approaching fast, which only means that leaks are increasingly hard to avoid. Today is the turn of Huawei, which is expected to launch its P10 flagship during the fair; however, 91mobiles (in collaboration with Steve Hemmerstoffer) has managed to give us a pretty comprehensive early look at it…
Richard Yu, chief executive of Huawei’s consumer business group, has taken to Weibo today to seemingly confirm that the long-awaited successor to the Huawei Watch is scheduled to be announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona…
Chinese phone sales continue to be dominated by local brands as shown by the latest analyst data via Bloombeerg. With the exception of Apple’s iPhone, all of the top manufacturers in the region are Chinese companies that make Android phones. Across 2016, Oppo, Huawei and Vivo grew in the double digits to take the top three slots and represent half of all smartphone sales.
Xiaomi slipped to fourth place with 35% fall in sales and Samsung Galaxy phones failed to hit the top five at all, being grouped into the ‘Others’ miscellaneous category by IDC.
Last year Honor helped change the game in terms of hardware on budget devices with the Honor 5X, but it wasn’t a perfect device. It lacked a bit in terms of specifications, and the pre-loaded software didn’t help matters. Now, Honor is bringing the successor to that device, the Honor 6X, to the United States.
One basic feature that all Huawei Mate 9 users should know is how to take a screenshot. Just like almost any other Android device currently available on the market, the Mate 9 allows you to take a screenshot using the hardware power and volume keys. With EMUI 5.0, Huawei’s latest device allows you to take scrolling screenshots and features the ability to take partial screenshots with the use of your knuckle…
In the past, one of the biggest complaints about EMUI — Huawei’s skinned version of Android — is the fact that it didn’t have an application drawer and would litter homescreens with app shortcuts. The only way to gain an app drawer was by installing a third-party launcher. Thankfully, with the release of EMUI 5.0 on Huawei’s Mate 9, there is a setting that can enable a native app drawer without requiring you to download anything…
After being teased earlier this month, Honor has just made the new Honor Magic smartphone official. The new “concept-to-life” smartphone brings curved glass edges on both sides, a super-thin design, and dual-cameras.
Huawei, the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, has been slowly but swiftly making their way into the US market. Roughly a month ago, the company announced their latest flagship device, the Mate 9, and with it, a plan for a worldwide rollout that would eventually include the US. Although we received a report last week stating that the handset’s launch would be “rocky” due to carrier challenges, we are now getting word from the famed leaker, Evan Blass, that the Mate 9 will be available for purchase stateside on January 6…
Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has been releasing some fantastic smartphones over the past couple of years ─ just look at the Honor 8. Now, the company is preparing launch yet another new device. Yesterday, the company sent out invitations to a press event in China to reveal a new smartphone, rumored to be the Honor “Magic.”
Update: It was pointed out that this photo is likely fake, created by photoshopping an image of the Galaxy Note 7.
Huawei hasn’t always been the best when it comes to software, both in terms of its skin and reliability of system updates. However, along with a massive overhaul to its UI on the Mate 9, the company appears to be pushing Android Nougat to a few of its devices just a bit quicker than usual.
Huawei has been growing like a wildfire over the past couple of years, and with no signs of slowing down. Recently the company launched its new flagship, the Huawei Mate 9, to good reception. Unlike previous launches, however, Huawei confirmed plans to launch the device in the United States, but that might be a bit more difficult than Huawei hoped…
Update: It appears Blass has deleted his tweet, which makes sense because it turns out that this device is just the Mate 9 Lite (or perhaps the already-announced Honor 6X?)
Evan Blass, otherwise known as Evleaks, has today shared an image of a supposed “Huawei GR5” smartphone set for sometime in 2017. That doesn’t make sense, however, since the Huawei GR5 is actually the name of the Huawei 5X for Canada. Still, this does appear to be a new Huawei phone…
A new report from Strategy Analytics today sheds some light into the smartphone industry for the third quarter of 2016. The report shows that the mobile industry as a whole brought in $9.4 billion in profits, while Apple accounted for a monstrous 91 percent of that number. In second place, however, was Huawei…
Earlier this month Honor was on the lookout for beta testers for Android Nougat on the Honor 8 smartphone. After finding a handful of candidates, the company is now pushing beta builds to devices, and today we’re getting our first look.
Huawei is an ambitious company. Over the next two years, the Chinese behemoth plans to overtake Apple to become the second biggest smartphone maker on the planet. It sounds impossible, but considering the company took the number three spot in just four years, I would give them a chance at reaching that goal. Why?
Huawei releases a ton of phones each year and for the most part, they’re all pretty solid. We’ve reviewed several Huawei-made devices over the years including the Nexus 6P, Honor 5X, Huawei P9, and most recently, the Honor 8. All four of these devices are fantastic in their own respects, but there’s a common flaw on all of them ─ the software, but we’ll get into that.
Now it’s 2016, Huawei isn’t slowing down in the slightest, and we’ve got the Huawei Mate 9. Long story short, this phone is great, but let’s take a closer look…
Earlier this month Huawei made its latest smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9, official. Prior to that announcement we saw multiple leaks pointing to two different models, the Mate 9 and the Mate 9 Pro. During the announcement we did get two models, but they weren’t quite what we expected. Now Huawei has made the Mate 9 Pro official, at least in China.
