While nearly everything was already known about the device prior to its unveiling, it’s still one of the better phones of 2015. As was expected, the OnePlus 2 features a 5.5-inch display at 1080p and a refreshed design. When it was announced, the bold Chinese company bragged that it was not a 2015 flagship, but rather a 2016 flagship. That didn’t pan out so well, with many customers preferring other flagships thanks to the OnePlus 2’s curious omission of NFC and other features.

On the front of the device is a fingerprint sensor, as well as a front-facing camera, while the back houses a OnePlus logo and a 13MP f/2.0 camera capable of shooting 4k video. The fingerprint sensor can support up to five different fingerprints, similar to Apple’s iPhone fingerprint. As far as specs go, the device is powered by an improved version of the Snapdragon 810 that solves all of the reported issues with overheating. The device also features 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and a 3,300Ah battery, as well as a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.

OnePlus says that the OnePlus 2 is getting VoLTE support ‘in the next quarter’

OnePlus has announced today (via a blog post) that VoLTE (voice over LTE) support — which launched out of the box on the company’s most recent flagship, OnePlus 3 — is coming to the OnePlus 2:

In line with rolling out new products, services and features for the holiday season, we have one more good news to share with our fans, and that is about VoLTE support on our flagship devices. We’ve been keeping a close eye on forum discussions and noted the requests to enable VoLTE (Voice over LTE) or HD calling support on OnePlus smartphones.

OnePlus took to its official forums this morning to announce that the 64GB OnePlus 2 is being discounted by $40. The new price for the company’s ‘flagship killer’ is $349, down from $389. The drop in price is permanent and will be reflected internationally. In the UK, as an example, you can snag a OnePlus 2 for just £249. As a gesture of goodwill, OnePlus will retroactively refund the price difference to anyone who has purchased the OP2 over the past 15 days.

OnePlus has just announced what many hopeful owners have been wanting to hear for a long time: From December 5th (and forever), anyone will be able to buy the OnePlus 2 without an invite. The company’s co-founder, Carl Pei announced the news on the company’s official forums today. Customers looking to buy will only have to hit OnePlus’ store page and select to buy, and won’t be required to enter a code.

From the beginning, OnePlus has maintained that its invite system was necessary when the company started out to help it manage inventory, and ensure it didn’t have tons of unsold stock lying around eating its margins. While the OnePlus 2’s invite system was comfortably better than the OPO’s, it still left customers frustrated. OnePlus 2 available invite-free from Amazon India

Without an invite, buying a OnePlus 2 has been pretty much impossible up until now. Today, however, the company has made its ‘2016 flagship killer’ available invite-free on Amazon India to local customers.

The open sale is only live until Friday, when the company will launch its global Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend holiday deals. Those planning to order are limited to just one device each, costing 24,999 Indian Rupees (roughly $377 USD).

OnePlus has been both praised and criticized for its use of an invite-only system for purchasing its smartphones. Whichever side of the fence you sit on, when you actually want to buy one for yourself, having to wait for an invite can be a frustrating experience. Despite that, the experience has arguably been better with the OnePlus 2. It’s already held a couple of open sale days, has sent more invites out, even extending their expiration and introduced a new extended warranty to make it a more pleasant buying experience.

OnePlus 2 and OnePlus One will get Android 6.0 Marshmallow update in Q1 2016

We’re all eager to discover when our smartphones of choice will finally receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update – and for OnePlus smartphone owners, it’ll mean waiting until the beginning of next year.

OnePlus announced on its forums this morning that it will be rolling out Marshmallow-based builds of Cyanogen OS for the OnePlus One and Oxygen OS for the OnePlus 2 at some point in Q1 2016.

With the OnePlus 2, the manufacturer will be switching its proprietary fingerprint sensor firmware out in favor of the standard Marshmallow ones when it rolls the Android 6.0-based software in early 2016.

The OnePlus 2 will also be updated in Q1, and the update will include the new standard Marshmallow API for the fingerprint sensor. We’ve heard requests for us creating an API for the current fingerprint implementation in OxygenOS, but have decided against this since we’re switching over to the standard Android M implementation soon.

Although the company has built a version of Oxygen OS for the OnePlus One, the company is rightly focussing on rolling out the officially-supported Cyanogen OS update first. As for the latest phone, the OnePlus X, there are plans to push Marshmallow ‘as soon as possible’, we don’t have any specific timeframe from the manufacturer.

Google engineer warning: Don’t use OnePlus’ Type-C connectors with your Nexus 5X/6P

Recently we brought you news that a Google engineer named Benson Leung was testing a bunch of USB Type-C cables and reviewing them on Amazon, so that you didn’t have to and risk ruining your brand new Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P or Chromebook Pixel. Just yesterday, Leung specifically called out OnePlus on his public G+ profile to shame the company on its use of outdated tech which isn’t just old, but could end up damaging people’s devices. In short: If you have a Nexus 6P, 5X or Chromebook Pixel, you couldn’t buy any of OnePlus’ Type C connectors to charge or connect them…

OnePlus introduces new ‘On-Guard’ extended warranty program

In a blog post this morning, OnePlus announced what many concerned customers have been waiting to hear for some time: The company is making a renewed effort to provide better customer service and offering a new extended warranty. Customers will be able to purchase the new On-Guard extended warranty when they buy a OnePlus 2 and gain added coverage against accidental damage or liquid damage.

Initially, the On-Guard cover will be available in Europe and India only, but the company is working with a partner in the US and Canada and will announce a similar extended warranty program in North America soon. In Europe, customers can buy either 12 months or 24 months cover for €39.99 ($44 USD approx) or €64.99 ($72 USD approx) respectively.
