LG G Flex 2 available from Sprint starting March 13th

LG G Flex2

The LG G Flex 2 was announced at CES 2015, and today Sprint has announced that it will be carrying the device effective March 13th. If you’re ordering from Sprint, the G Flex 2 will be available in an exclusive color: Volcano Red.

The wait is almost over for one of the hottest and most awarded phones at CES this year – LG G Flex2™. Sprint will offer the next generation of the revolutionary LG G Flex smartphone beginning on March 13. Only Sprint customers will have access to the striking Volcano Red color – it will also be available in Platinum Silver.

The G Flex 2 has a full HD 5.5-inch curved P-OLED display, a 2.0 GHz Snapdragon 810 processor from Qualcomm (with an Octa-Core 64-bit CPU), a rear-facing 13-megapixel camera with OIS+ and Laser Auto Focus, a 3,000mAh battery, and ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop.

If you can’t wait until March 13th to give Sprint your money, the carrier is opening preorders for the G Flex 2 on February 20th at http://www.sprint.com/flex2.

AT&T also announced in January that they had plans to launch the device sometime in Q1 of this year, but the landing page for the G Flex 2 on AT&T’s website still says that it’s “Coming soon.”

Google Inbox makes its way to iPad, now works with Firefox and Safari on the web

tablet_001

Google has this morning announced that its Inbox email app experience made for Gmail is officially expanding to tablets, and both the iOS (you can read more about the iOS update over at 9to5Mac) and Android versions of the app (which actually received the update in December) are now ready to go.

Since the app was launched, its web interface was tied down to Google’s own Chrome browser. But Google announced change to that requirement today as well…

Google launches official AdWords app for Android, but it’s Canada-only for now

AdWords - Android Apps on Google Play 2015-02-18 15-36-09

Google has today launched an official app for its AdWords platform, but sadly the company is restricting access to Canada for the time being. This news comes after Google launched its AdWords Express app last year, which was made specifically for the company’s automated AdWords service for small businesses.

FBI wants more ‘remote access’ search freedom, but Google doesn’t approve

Google-London-Lede

The US government is seeking to have more regulatory control over the digital realm, and many tech companies are taking a stand. Google is definitely one of those, taking to its Public Policy Blog today to tell the world about proposed changes to Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 41, a procedural rule that sets limits on search warrants. The Advisory Committee on the Rules of Criminal Procedure, at the request of the Department of Justice, is proposing a big change to this rule, and Google says it could be a “monumental” threat to constitutional rights.

HTC takes to Twitter to tease the ‘new HTC One’

We have a full-on teaser war happening right now. HTC has revved up their Twitter engines and started to post about a device they’re calling the “new HTC One,” slated for announcement on March 1st, 2015 in Barcelona, Spain. No mention of the “M9” moniker that the device is widely assumed to have (and was spotted on none other than HTC’s website), but we’ll have to wait and see what happens…

[tweet https://twitter.com/HTC_UK/status/567783134180040704 align=’center’]

The most reliable leaks we’ve seen thus far claim to show the “Hima” M9 device in two variants. Details are currently sparse in terms of specifications, but at least one of these bad boys should have a 5.5-inch display, the Snapdragon 810 SoC is widely expected to power them, and 3 GB of RAM seems to be the norm for this refresh cycle. Upleaks, which has a decent track record, spilled some “Hima” specs in December.

IDC: Xiaomi’s growth tops Samsung in China, but Apple is making a dent too

According to the latest numbers from IDC, Xiaomi—the rising star of the smartphone industry—has managed to pass up Samsung in China. In 2013, Xiaomi trailed Samsung’s almost 19% market share by a solid 13 percentage points (at just 5.3%), and was only the 5th largest maker of smartphones in China. Things changed in 2014. Last year, Xiaomi finished off with 12.5% of the market, almost a half-point more than Samsung at 12.1%, taking the top spot and passing not just Samsung, but Lenovo, Huawei, and Coolpad as well…

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Google Glass: ‘We always thought it would flop’

screen-shot-2015-02-10-at-1-25-14-pm

As Apple prepares to bring its new smartwatch to the market, an extensive profile of Jony Ive from The New Yorker (you can find more over at 9to5Mac) has revealed how the Cupertino company sees Google Glass. But it wasn’t Ive, Apple’s design head, that made the comments. Rather, Apple CEO Tim Cook was very straightforward in saying that Google’s head-mounted display was putting a wearable in “the wrong place,” and that “glasses were not a smart move.”

New photos claim to show Zenfone 2 variant w/ 5-inch screen

Zenfone 2 5 inch Edition 3

New photos have surfaced this morning showing what is purportedly the 5-inch variant of the ASUS Zenfone 2. This device has been rumored for quite some time, but now we have some tangible evidence that it’s likely a legitimate part of the Zenfone 2 lineup. The Taiwanese company announced the Zenfone 2 at CES 2015, but only showed off a model with a 5.5-inch screen.

Google adds two-week grace period to Project Zero bug squashing initiative

Google Personal Search

Google announced its Project Zero initiative in the middle part of last year, and now the Mountain View company is making some amendments to the rules for disclosure of bugs it finds in vendors’ software. There has been a 90-day deadline in place since the launch of the program, and that seems to be working well according to a post on the Project Zero blog, but the company says that it has taken into consideration “external feedback around some of the corner cases” and made some changes.

ASUS reportedly working on a non-Android Wear smartwatch w/ better battery life

ASUS-ZenWatch-03

ASUS ZenWatch, the company’s current Android Wear offering

Leaked details last week of a purported HTC smartwatch in the works suggested that the Taiwanese company would be ditching Android Wear in at least one future device, and now it appears that ASUS—another Taiwanese company—is doing the same. According to a report this morning from Focus Taiwan, ASUS is working a wrist-worn device with much better battery life—and they’re going to achieve that by leaving behind Google’s operating system.

Google has a plan to zero-rate mobile app data used by Android One devices

Site default logo image

Android One Indonesia

Google is reportedly working on a way for users of Android One devices to get free data when using some apps, as data plans are expensive and can sometimes prevent potential customers from getting online. Zero rating is most commonly done in deals between carriers and third-party apps that will let users of those apps use them without it tolling their data usage. But Google has a bigger plan, bringing zero rating to many third-party apps in developing markets like India.

The company may go as far as to make it possible for any developer to zero-rate the mobile data used by their application…

Google testing a new logo for YouTube that matches mobile apps

youtube-new-logo-2

Google is testing a new logo on YouTube.com, bringing the simpler round-rect icon with a play button to the desktop interface. If you use any of the YouTube mobile apps, you may find this icon to be very familiar.

Here’s a look at the current mobile app icons—the Android version of YouTube is on the left, while the iOS version is on the right:

Notably, the new icon being tested on YouTube.com is very similar—with the exception of some minor details—to the icon for the Android version. Google has yet to actually roll out the new icon to the YouTube website, but you can find more images of the experiment at Google Operating System.

This is what the current version of the YouTube.com logo looks like in comparison:
