Google AdWords app for Android now available

Google has just officially launched an AdWords app for Android, and it’s available starting now for all existing AdWords customers globally.

The app brings a companion experience to running AdWords campaigns on the desktop with the ability to view campaign stats, update budgets and bids, get support from Google, and more. It will also bring real-time notifications for AdWords to your Android device.

More from Google:

Whenever you open the app, you’ll see an overview of your clicks, costs, and conversions. For deeper insights, you can view metrics by ad group, day of week and device… You’ll also receive customized suggestions that you can act on immediately. For example, if there’s an opportunity to get more impressions by adjusting your bids, we’ll let you know so you can make the change right from the app.

The new AdWords app for Android is available on Google Play now for devices running Android 4.0 and up.

Twitter for Android updated with ‘while you were away’ timeline recap

Twitter for Android was updated tonight with support for Twitter’s “while you were away” recap feature, which surfaces tweets the app finds relevant to you when you’ve spent some time away from the microblogging service.

A lot can happen while you’re on the go. To fill in some of those gaps, we will surface a few of the best Tweets you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise, determined by engagement and other factors. If you check in on Twitter now and then for a quick snapshot of what’s happening, you’ll see this recap more often; if you spend a lot of time on Twitter already, you’ll see it less.

The feature first rolled out to iOS users last month. You can grab the update for free from the Google Play Store.

Google Docs for Android updated w/ Office Compatibility Mode improvements, more

Google today has started rolling out an update to the Google Docs app on Android with a few new enhancements. First off, the update adds support for selecting, cutting, copying, and pasting text, images, tables, and charts in Office Compatibility Mode. The update also adds the ability to insert links into Google documents.

A new version of the Google Docs Android app is now available on Google Play. New features include:

• Support for selecting, cutting, copying and pasting text along with images, tables, and charts in Office Compatibility Mode
• Ability to insert links in Google documents

The update is available now via the Play Store, although it is a staged rollout and may take a little while to hit your device.

VLC 3.0 will gain support for Chromecast streaming from Android devices

The popular VLC media player will be upgraded to version 3.0 soon, introducing a whole host of features to the software, including support for Google’s Chromecast streaming device. The change was mentioned in a VLC change log on the VideoLan website.

Chromecast support in VLC will allow users to stream their stored media to their TVs from supported devices, including Android handsets and tablets. iOS devices, and computers running OS X and Windows are also expected to get the upgrade.

VideoLan, the development company behind VLC, hasn’t announced the availability date for version 3.0 yet. You can grab the current version of the Android app from the Google Play Store.

Google Maps lane guidance expands to 15 new European countries

Google today has announced that it is expanding support of lane guidance in Maps for Android to 15 additional European countries. The feature was launched in the United States and Canada last year, with Google promising expansion at a future date. Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom gained support for lane guidance in December.

How to watch the Grammy Awards live stream on your Android smartphone, tablet or computer

The 57th annual Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place this weekend on Sunday, February 8th, and CBS just sent over details on the only official live stream of the event accessible through your Android smartphone, tablet or Chromecast connected TV.

Head below for all the details on how to watch official streams for the event on your computer and all of your mobile devices.

Android Smartphones/Tablets: CBS mobile app

CBS has broadcasting of the event locked down this year, and so for mobile users the only official live stream available of the actual awards show will be the CBS app (US only).

It will require a CBS All Access subscription, however, and is also only available in 14 major markets, including: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. It’s clear CBS is trying to push its All Access service, which offers next day access to TV shows, live TV in some markets, and on-demand content, but you can watch using a free trial and cancel before it expires… 

Normally $6 month, you can take advantage of a free week trial of CBS All Access to watch the show.

The live stream kicks off at 8p.m. – 11:30p.m. live ET/ delayed PT.

The official GRAMMYs and CBS apps will have a live stream of the GRAMMY Awards Premiere Ceremony and red carpet festivities starting at noon PT/3 p.m. ET, and the app will offer a second screen experience of sorts for those viewing the awards on TV at home.

New ‘while you were away’ recaps coming soon to Twitter for Android

Twitter this evening has announced in a blog post that it is rolling out a new “While you were away” recap feature to its mobile apps. Starting today on iOS and “soon” on Twitter.com and Android, a “While you were away” banner will appear in your feed, showing you the top tweets that you missed since you last opened the app.

Google Chrome stable channel bumped to version 40, packs tons of bug fixes

Google has today pushed Chrome 40 to the stable channel, specifically version 40.0.2214.91. This update, while packing only minor changes, is the first that has moved version 40 to stable from its beta stage (which it entered in late November of 2014). Of the changes are an updated app information dialog for the Windows and Linux versions of the browser, and a new message for when the clock is ahead or behind. The more important change in this update is the inclusion of 62 security fixes, which are all documented on the Chromium issue tracker.

The Chrome team is delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 40 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux. Chrome 40.0.2214.91 contains a number of fixes and improvements, including:

• Updated Chrome app info dialog for Windows and Linux.
• A new clock behind/ahead error message.

Instagram inviting Android users to beta testing program

Instagram users on Android could soon be using pre-release versions of the photo sharing app before updates hit the Google Play Store.

Instagram is currently inviting testers on Android to take pre-release versions of its social app for a spin through its beta program for users. The social network shared a Google Group found here where potential testers can apply to test and give feedback for versions of Instagram currently being developed.

Google’s Field Trip app updated with Material Design

You might not have heard of it, but Google has a first-party app on the Play Store called Field Trip that basically serves as a guide to all things located in your vicinity. The Mountain View company just recently released a new version of the app, bringing to it Material Design and a flurry of other improvements.

While the app used to sport a vintage look and feel that made it somewhat unique, the new version goes the opposite direction and simplifies the entire experience. In addition to the redesign, Google says that the new version comes with new content from “hundreds” of publishers and performance improvements.

It appears that Google could soon release its promised redesigned Calendar app for iPhone after first making the announcement and releasing the app for Android last November. The Next Web this morning shared a handful of leaked screenshots that provide a first look at Google Calendar for iOS, including info cards that indicate Gmail, Photos and Maps integration will be key features of the app.
