Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

The best Android phones you can buy [July 2016]

It’s already July, and with an ever-increasing number of notable Android OEMs reaching maturity, we’ve seen more new handsets than usual launch this summer. We had the Huawei Mate 8 and Honor 5X at CES in January, followed later by Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge and others around the time of Mobile World Congress, and last month saw the new OnePlus 3 and Moto Z. But which ones are the best buys?…

Samsung’s new Smart Glow LED notification ring leaked on the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016)

Just last week we first caught word that Samsung was working on a new notification system known as Smart Glow. The new system would use a special LED ring on the back of the device surrounding the camera sensor that can display multiple colors to signal users of incoming calls, messages, or other notifications. While we’re expecting this to appear on Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy S8, the feature should make its debut on the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016).

Update 2: OnePlus now resuming rollout, but this time pushing 3.2.1 instead of 3.2.0.

Update: OnePlus says it is halting the OTA update to investigate issues some are having while upgrading.

OnePlus is currently rolling out OxygenOS 3.2.0 to the OnePlus 3. This new update has been promised by the company for quite some time and within it brings improvements to RAM management, the addition of an sRGB mode to the developer settings, as well as a handful of bug fixes.

Huawei implies that a photo from a $4,500 DSLR was taken by its P9 smartphone [Update: Huawei responds]

Update: Shortly after publishing this article Huawei provided us with this statement:

It has recently been highlighted that an image posted to our social channels was not shot on the Huawei P9. The photo, which was professionally taken while filming a Huawei P9  advert, was shared to inspire our community. We recognise though that we should have been clearer with the captions for this image. It was never our intention to mislead. We apologise for this and we have removed the image.

The cameras on our smartphones just continue to get better and better with improved sensors, powerful software, and impressive low light capability. But there are certain things they just can’t do.

With its P9, Huawei implemented an advanced dual-camera system to improve quality of the shots you take, and while they can be certainly impressive, as noted in our full review, Huawei’s marketing department might think just a bit too highly of this camera…

TrendForce: HTC 10 yearly production volume forecasted at just 1 million units

Site default logo image

According to a report by TrendForce analyst Avril Wu, the total production volume of HTC’s flagship HTC 10 will hover around 1 million units, with an overall yearly production volume of just 13 million units. That figure is significantly less than last year’s yearly production mark of 18 million units, even with the assistance of an upcoming Google Nexus branded HTC smartphone for the second half of 2016.

Three BlackBerry Android devices likely in the works, one possibly made by TCL/Alcatel

At the beginning of the month, reports described slow BlackBerry PRIV sales and high return rates. Despite this and a potential exit from the hardware business, VentureBeat has details on three new Android-powered devices in the works. These rumors are similar to ones from last year and involve a pair of touchscreen devices and one with a full keyboard.

Dell plans to kill its Android tablet business, current models to stop getting OS upgrades

Dell has never been huge in the Android tablet market, but today it admitted defeat — the company has just revealed (via PCWorld) that they will no longer be selling Android tablets. The tablets never sold very well and as its 2-in-1 Windows tablet business picks up, it only makes sense that the company put to rest the Android-powered devices that mostly played the background.

The next version of Android is officially ‘Nougat’

Update: A video from the statue unwrapping officially confirms that Nougat is Android 7.0.

The next version of Android (which has been in Developer Preview since earlier this year) is officially called Nougat. A ceremony at the Googleplex this morning unveiled the Android figurine simply standing on top of a nougat bar. Unfortunately, the announcement did not come with an official version number or a launch date.

Last call for guesses: Google to reveal the sweet Android N name today [Poll]

According to a tweet from the Android Twitter account this morning, Google is set to finally reveal what the “N” in Android N stands for today. The Android team told us a few weeks ago that we would be getting the Android N name in a “few weeks,” so this isn’t the most unexpected announcement considering it has been right at 21 days since.

This comes as we’re just over 2 weeks since the release of the fourth Android N Developer Preview, and we have one more preview to go before the final release. The last several preview releases have fallen 4 weeks apart, so it’s possible — although not necessarily likely — that the 5th preview will drop today alongside the name of the new OS.

Report: Smart Glow is Samsung’s feature-rich replacement for notification LEDs

Many of this year’s flagship smartphones feature always-on displays to deliver notifications and other relevant information. According to SamMobile, Samsung is working on a new notification system that consists of a ring of lights around the camera bump. Smart Glow would pulse for incoming notifications and deliver useful information on future devices, like the Galaxy S8.

Design sketches show what an unannounced OnePlus smartwatch would have looked like

Earlier this month OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that OnePlus had been working on their own smartwatch back in 2015, but the company never decided to bring it to market. Now, we know the watch would have featured a circular display, as seen in design sketches from 2015. The image tweeted by co-founder Carl Pei shows roughly what the watch would have looked like as well as describes some of its functionality.

VR is slowly taking over the tech space as more and more companies make their attempts to steal your content-consuming eyeballs. As you may know, Google was among the first to debut a mobile VR experience with Google Cardboard, but it was pretty barebones to say the least.

At Google I/O 2016 we got a sneak peek at what Google has in store for virtual reality in the coming months with Google Daydream. And right around the corner from the full Android N release, Google has debuted a set of developer tools to allow anyone with a Nexus 6P to test out Daydream right now…
