Google was widely criticized in 2019 for only offering 64GB of storage on the base models of its Pixel 4 and 4 XL smartphones. To fix that, it sounds like the company is planning to make 128 GB of storage the only option on its upcoming Pixel 5 and 4a 5G smartphones.

Way back in February, we started tracking a few Pixel codenames (as we do), and it wasn’t until today — in early July — that we had some sense of what these phones actually are. Google put their retail names in the Google app, and for those of us who have followed the Pixel series for several years, they might seem like a bit of a curveball. Google’s definitely switching things up this year — but here’s how you can start to make sense of the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5…

For months now, we’ve been tracking three codenames tied to the lineup of Made by Google’s 2020 Pixel phones. Now all three codenames have appeared in the Google app along with associated product names including the “Pixel 5” and the “Pixel 4a 5G.”

The affordable Pixel 4a hasn’t even surfaced yet, but with a delayed-release cycle, it has us thinking ever further forward and, therefore, about our own Pixel 5 wishlist.
We’ve reported multiple times at this point that Google’s Pixel 5 wouldn’t ship with a Snapdragon 865 processor and even pointed to evidence saying it would be the Snapdragon 765. Still, though, many held out hope the phone would have a high-end chipset. Now, another report is backing up our findings leading to the question — will you buy a Pixel 5 with the Snapdragon 765 chip powering the show?
Google, like most other companies, runs consumer questionnaires to gauge reactions to upcoming products and decisions. One such survey has emerged today that describes the Pixel 4a — down to the pricing — and how the company could distinguish a “Premium Google Pixel Phone.”
While we’ve been spending a lot of time lately learning about the swiftly approaching Pixel 4a, it’s not too early to start thinking about this fall’s Google Pixel 5. The Google Camera app has actually indirectly confirmed some specs for the Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL, which point to them not being “flagship” phones.
Last year’s Google Pixel 4 saw one of the heaviest leak seasons of any smartphone, partially due to a change in Google’s production that saw the device manufactured in part out of Vietnam instead of China. Now, a fresh report is confirming that both Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 will be produced in Vietnam, with the low-cost model starting production in April.
Google’s 2020 Pixel Buds are just around the corner, and while they’re slated to have solid battery life, sometimes you need just a little bit more play time. Phones like the Galaxy S10 and S20 have offered the ability to give a Qi wireless charge to other phones or to their Galaxy Buds line. It appears Google may also be developing this feature for the Pixel 5 under the name “Battery Share.”
It’s hard to believe, but it’s only February and Pixel leak season has already begun. Today, a mention of the Google “Pixel 5” has appeared in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
Thanks to some questionable leaks, we’ve already begun thinking beyond the upcoming Pixel 4a and onto Google’s next flagship Android, the Pixel 5. Google’s Pixel phones have been competing as “flagships” since 2016, but buying a “flagship” in 2020 can now set you back well over $1,000. What would happen if Google stopped chasing “flagship” specs with this year’s Pixel 5 and made something entirely different?
