Today’s Android for Work Live event is now available for replay [Video]

Android for Work Live - YouTube 2015-11-04 16-26-20

We told you last month that the first Android for Work Live conference was happening today, and well… today is here. In case you missed the event, you can now head over to YouTube and watch an archived copy. Of course there weren’t any groundbreaking announcements at the event, but some of the talks will serve well anyone who’s looking to transform their business with Android and Google’s services. Here it is:

It’s incredibly easy to bypass Factory Reset Protection on a Samsung phone [Video]

How to bypass Factory Reset Protection on Samsung devices - YouTube 2015-11-03 12-26-12

Factory Reset Protection was introduced with Android Lollipop, and, like Apple’s iCloud Activation Lock, it’s supposed to make it really hard to resell a stolen Android phone. The gist is that when you use Android recovery menu to reset a phone to factory settings, the phone will require upon reboot that you sign in using a Google account you previously used on the device before resetting it. If someone steals your phone and wipes it, they need your Google account for it to be anything but a brick.

Well, it appears that a flaw in Samsung’s phones lets potential thieves around this security measure, and it looks like the workaround (via RootJunky) takes just about five minutes to pull off…

Hands-on: Nextbit’s Robin is a cloud-first smartphone that gets smarter with use [Video]

robin-lead

Nextbit’s Robin is a new smartphone that’s primary goal is to eliminate the lack of smartphone storage. Robin uses the cloud and intelligently archives stuff you don’t use or need often, while backing it up to the cloud. Recently, we took a trip to Nextbit HQ for a closer look at Robin and to see what it’s all about…

Developer manages to run Nintendo 64 and PSP games on his LG G Watch [Video]

Nintendo 64 on Android Wear - YouTube 2015-10-30 15-31-52

We’ve seen a slew of emulators — everything from Macintosh II to Game Boy Color — running on Android Wear devices before, but the latest entries from Hacking Jules might be the most absurd yet. In these videos, we can see that popular PSP emulator PPSSPP and an unnamed Nintendo 64 emulator are both — albeit barely — capable of running on the LG G Watch…

It goes without saying that this is definitely a case of “why not,” rather than any kind of practical use case. Both emulators are barely chugging along (despite how impressive it is that they’re working at all). As you can see, frame rates are definitely in the realm of unplayable, and a screen of this size just doesn’t really work as a controller either.

Here are the videos:

Google’s new Nexus 6P buckles in hands-on bend test, fails at durability [Video]

nexus-6p-bends

There’s nothing like a little controversy when a new smartphone is launched to get people debating online. Whether that’s an iPhone that scratches or bends too easily, or a stylus that gets jammed inside a phone when placed the wrong way around. The Nexus 6P is the latest pure Android phone from Google, and is about to come under some new scrutiny from prospective buyers thanks to a video from Jerry Rig Everything on YouTube

Review: Google’s Nexus 5X is a great smartphone, but not the best in its class [Video]

nexus-5x-lead

Google’s Nexus 5X may not the best budget smartphone you can buy, but it’s the only one that will appeal to purists out there. Google’s LG-made Nexus 5X is definitely worthy of some attention, but these days it’s a tough market out there for a flagship with a midrange price. The question is, can its $379 price tag win your heart and the cash in your wallet?

The Nexus 5X is the first budget Nexus we’ve seen in quite a while, the smallest as well, and as the name suggests, it’s the sequel to the Nexus 5. With that, you’ll find a very familiar plastic build with updated internals and a few extra surprises…

ASUS ZenPad S 8.0 review: A lot of tablet for $200, but with compromises [Video]

zenpad-review-wp

Android tablets are something of an unusual product. No one’s quite convinced that Google’s operating system has been adequately optimized for big displays, but slowly and surely, it’s improving. One thing you can say about them is that they’re normally good value for money. Never has that been truer than with the ASUS ZenPad S 8.0. It’s a small, portable tablet that only costs $200 and has a 2K resolution screen. For the money, there isn’t too much to complain about…

BlackBerry shows off its PRIV Android slider phone on YouTube [Video]

Introducing PRIV - YouTube 2015-10-16 12-54-19

BlackBerry already made the PRIV official last month, and then followed up with some of the first official images of the device posted to its blog. Not much of what the company has said up to this point though has been new, though. Even the official images it published a couple weeks ago were pretty much the same as the ones we saw four months ago.

And this new video follows in the same vein as that theme. We’ve already seen an in-depth hands-on video with the phone, we’ve seen its specs leaked what feels like a dozen times, pre-registration for the phone opened up a couple of days ago, and just earlier today pre-orders for the phone went live in the UK. I guess it’s just a pretty marketing clip…

We’ll be taking a look at pictures and video from both devices to find out…

Screenshot_20151013-123340

VLC is your go-to all-around media player no matter which platform you’re using, and today the app’s Android counterpart got a pretty decently-sized update. Along with the usual performance improvements that ship with pretty much every app update since apps have existed, version 1.6 also comes with improvements to internal decoding speed, more Material design, and more…

Unboxing and comparing all the OnePlus 2 StyleSwap covers [Video]

styleswap-covers

When OnePlus released its first smartphone, it also launched a bamboo StyleSwap Cover, giving you the option to go with a wooden back to replace the standard plastic one. To say it was tricky to install would be something of an understatement. This year, the company’s learned its lesson and released a cover which is much easier to install and comes in four different flavors. I unboxed them all, applied them and compared them…

Facebook experimenting with letting friends easily send “Happy Birthday!” videos on mobile

Facebook birthday videos

One of the many things Facebook does well is make it nearly impossible to miss when one of your friends turns another year older. On the web, birthday reminders are placed prominently near the top right with links to easily wish your pal a happy birthday, and on mobile Facebook has experimented with alerts and other ways to help you not forget someone’s big day.

Now Facebook appears to be testing an even more personal way to make your birthday wish stand out: video messages. The Next Web reports that some mobile users have seen a new ‘birthday video’ option appear under Facebook’s Birthdays section (although don’t worry if you don’t see it yet, I don’t have it either).

BLOCKS modular smartwatch launching on Kickstarter October 13th [Video]

BLOCKS - The World's First Modular Smartwatch - YouTube 2015-10-07 15-43-14

Four months ago, the team behind the BLOCKS smartwatch — a device not all too different from Google’s Project Ara smartphone in principle — said that it would begin crowdfunding in the “summer”. While the company may have missed that deadline by a few weeks, it looks like it’s going to happen nonetheless. The device is set to finally hit Kickstarter on October 13th…

Samsung Gear S2 unboxing and review [Video]

gear-s2

Today we’re taking a closer look at Samsung’s Gear S2. This new smartwatch was announced just last month during IFA 2015 and has been the talk of the town lately. We took a first look at it not too long ago and compared it with one of the other top smartwatches on the market, but it’s finally available to purchase. Either way, the Gear S2 is shaping up to be one of the top dogs in smartwatches thanks to some of its unique features — which surprisingly have nothing to do with Android Wear. Yep… this little guy is running Tizen and for the first time, I absolutely love it…

Nat & Lo tease Marshmallow’s Easter egg in today’s episode [Video]

A Brief History Of Android Easter Eggs - #NatAndLo Ep 8 - YouTube 2015-10-05 10-35-32

Update: Just as this article was being published, Google released the Android Marshmallow factory images.

Nat & Lo make videos about Google for their 20% project at Google, and today they’ve released episode 8. And with Google likely planning to push Android Marshmallow today (or very soon if not today),  it would make sense for the pair to release a video covering the brief history of Easter eggs in Android…

Moto 360 (2nd Gen) unboxing and review [Video]

360-lead

There’s really not a lot to say about this year’s Moto 360. It’s an Android Wear smartwatch, so there’s really not much different here over similar devices we’re seen over the last year or so as far as software goes. The real discussion with the 2nd gen Moto 360 is the design. What we have now is an evolved and matured version, but with one unfortunate similarity when compared to the first generation: that flat tire.

Like many, I was hoping that Motorola would eliminate this aspect altogether, but that didn’t happen. If you can look past the flat tire, which ultimately adds to some of the functionality here, there’s a lot to love about the Moto 360…

BlackBerry chief shows off Android-powered PRIV in TV interview

blackberry-priv-official-demo

BlackBerry’s upcoming PRIV handset isn’t this year’s best kept secret. From briefly showing off the phone’s hardware at MWC back in June, to announcing its name and availability in a recent earnings press release, the Canadian tech company seemingly isn’t too concerned with the device’s secrecy. Before the announcement was made last week, we’d already seen several unofficial leaks, both photographic and video.

Last Friday, John Chen gave an BNN’s Amber Kanwar an official first look at the Android-powered BlackBerry PRIV…

Review: One month with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ [Video]

plus-lead

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ … wow that’s a long name, but what a beautifully designed phone we have here. It’s of the best designs I’ve seen this year without a doubt, but what makes it so special? It’s essentially just a larger S6 Edge, right? Yep.

There are only two main things that make this phone different: a larger display and a larger battery. If you’re unfamiliar with the much smaller S6 Edge, check out our review or top features article, but due to the similarities between these two we’re not going to get too in-depth with this review…

Review: Huawei’s Mate S is well-built w/ a very fast fingerprint scanner, but falls short in some areas [Video]

huawei-leadI’m fairly new to Huawei’s lineup of smartphones, but since I was such a big fan of Huawei Watch, I had some high hopes and expectations for this new device. As with Huawei Watch, the unboxing experience is excellent. Huawei knows how to do packaging. It’s clean-cut and presented well. Though packaging is only a small part of the battle…

Review: Huawei Watch sets a new standard for Android Wear smartwatch design [Video]

Huawei Watch is beautiful. I know that’s a rather odd way to start out this review, but this is hands-down one of the best looking smartwatches on the market. I suppose that opinion is somewhat subjective depending on your taste, but every little detail about Huawei Watch’s look and feel is proof that there’s light at the end of the tunnel for beautiful smartwatch design…
