The existing Galaxy Note 4

Samsung is planning to bring forward the launch of the Galaxy Note 5 from September to August, according to the WSJ. It’s believed the change in schedule is designed to get the device on sale ahead of Apple’s anticipated September launch of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, which is likely to dominate tech media coverage that month.

Samsung has always previously launched its Note models on the eve of the IFA conference, which takes place in Berlin in September. The WSJ cites only a single source for the claim, but it’s not the first time we’ve heard suggestions that the company may bring forward the launch this year …

Windows Phone has not been the greatest success story in the world, and Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia to produce its own handsets looks to have been an even bigger flop. The company today announced that it is writing off $7.6B against the Nokia business – more than it paid for the company in the first place.

Microsoft has also revealed that it will be laying-off 7,800 staff – more than 6% of its workforce – over the next few months, mostly from the Phones business …

Google’s self-driving car takes to the roads in Austin, Texas, in next phase of testing

Site default logo image

google-car

If you live in Austin, Texas, and thought you spotted one of Google’s self-driving cars, you weren’t imagining things: the company confirmed today that it has chosen the city for the next phase of testing. Google said in a G+ post that it was important for the software to be tested in a variety of different driving environments.

We’ve chosen Austin, Texas, as a new testing location for our project, and one of our Lexus SUVs is there now, with safety drivers aboard, driving a few square miles north and northeast of downtown Austin. It’s important for us to get experience testing our software in different driving environments, traffic patterns and road conditions—so we’re ready to take on Austin’s pedicabs, pickup trucks, and everything in between.

Google first demonstrated the car to the city’s mayor, chief of police and other officials back in 2013 …

Lyft could see future competition from Google as Waze trials car-pooling app

Site default logo image

waze-trial

Google-owned Waze looks to have its sights set on competing with the ride-sharing service LyftReuters reports that it is trialling a ride-sharing service, initially in Waze’s home market, Israel.

The new application, called RideWith, will use Waze’s navigation system to learn the routes drivers most frequently take to work and match them up with people looking for a ride in the same direction.

Waze is at pains to point out that it is not trying to compete with Uber, where drivers are able to operate full-time and make a profit. RideWith will limit drivers to just two journeys per day, allowing them to share the cost of their journey to and from work …

Yahoo trialling Google ads in search despite earlier objections by Dept of Justice

Site default logo image

yahoo-serps-bing

Yahoo is currently including Google ads in some of its search results in what the company described to the NY Times as a “small test.” The ads were first spotted by SEO Book.

Yahoo confirmed on Wednesday that it has begun testing the use of Google search ads for a small portion of its desktop and mobile web search results. “As we work to create the absolute best experiences for Yahoo users, from time to time, we run small tests with a variety of partners including search providers,” the company said.

Google offered Yahoo an ad partnership all the way back in 2008, but pulled out after objections from the Department of Justice on antitrust grounds …

Xiaomi has announced sales of 34.7M smartphones in the first half of 2015, up 33% year-on-year. While the number is a substantial one, it’s a long way short of the 227% growth it experienced last year, and the company told Re/code that it has reduced its target for the year from 100M to 80M units …

Android users can unofficially listen in to Apple’s Beats 1 radio (for now)

Site default logo image

Apple is promising an Android version of its Apple Music app sometime in the fall, providing free access to its Beats 1 radio station and to its subscription-based streaming music service. But you don’t need to wait until then to check out Beats 1, thanks to the discovery of some unofficial web streams.

Developer Benjamin Rumble found an unencrypted HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) URL for the service and embedded it in a webpage on his personal site. You can also access the URL directly. Since then, others have found additional URLs …

Sprint rolling out Android 5.1 to Samsung Galaxy S6 edge owners

Samsung-s6-edge

If you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and are on the Sprint network, you can expect to see an over-the-air upgrade to Android 5.1 over the next few days. The update provides better control over notifications, device protection that persists even after resetting to factory settings and the usual performance improvements and bug fixes.

Sprint has posted a support page showing the release, which states that updates are issued in stages and can take several days to hit all phones.

T-Mobile rolled out Android 5.1.1 to the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge earlier this month.

Europe finally agrees to abolish roaming charges – but not until 2017

eu-roaming-end

Europe is an odd place to live. In some respects, it acts like one big country (you can drive across it without ever seeing a border or showing a passport), while in other ways it is very definitely individual countries – like paying roaming charges outside your own country for calls, text messages and data.

We’ve been promised an end to roaming charges for what feels like forever, and the good news is that after years of discussion and debate, the European Union finally agreed to a date. The bad news is that the date isn’t until June 15th 2017.

It means that from 15 June 2017 you can use your mobile device when travelling in the EU paying the same prices as at home (domestic prices). For instance, if you pay for a monthly volume of minutes, SMS and data in your country, any voice call, SMS and data session you make while travelling abroad in the EU will be deducted from that volume as if you were at home, with no extra charges. This means the end of roaming charges as Europeans experience them today in their daily life.

The EU has gradually imposed caps on roaming charges, and the current ones of €0.19/minute for calls and €0.06 per text message aren’t too bad, but €0.20/MB for data is the killer, making it easy to rack up a hefty bill with perfectly normal use of a smartphone in other European countries.

The EU has also agreed to net neutrality rules, though watered down with exceptions for ‘innovative’ services that require higher than usual bandwidth – like Netflix. The EU says that these services can be prioritized so long as this doesn’t harm other services, but as everyone would otherwise get the fastest speed for everything, this provision doesn’t appear to have any real meaning.

Updated Android app lets you see the music your favorite artists are Shazamming (Video)

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IzK9qtb8Gc]

If you’ve been following your favorite artists on Shazam, you can now find out what music they are checking out using the service. An update to the Android app due to roll out today lets you see which tracks they are identifying via Shazam.

Shazam says that the feature is available for hundreds of artists, including Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull, Shakira, Adam Lambert, Fifth Harmony, Clean Bandit, Maroon 5, Nick Jonas and Jason Derulo.

Don’t expect to catch any of them Shazamming anything terminally uncool, however: artists have the option of keeping individual searches private. The updated app hadn’t yet gone live at the time of writing, but check for it on the Play store later in the day.

Shazam finally made it to Android Wear last month.

Leaked dimensions & battery capacity match earlier rumors of Samsung Galaxy S6/edge Plus

samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-plus

Rumors that Samsung plans to launch a larger-screened version of the the Galaxy S6 edge kicked off at the beginning of the month, with the first alleged image appearing a day later. A later claimed image seemed to suggest a display size of around 5.5-inches, and dimensions and battery capacity reported today by SamMobile are in line with this kind of screen size.

It is around 151 mm tall and around 73 mm wide, which makes it 9 mm taller and 3 mm wider than the Galaxy S6 edge […] According to the insider information that we’ve received, the device will house a 3,000 mAh battery.

The phablet, which may be called the Samsung Galaxy S6 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Plus, is said to go by the internal codename of Project Zero 2. Earlier rumors had suggested the device would have a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, 32GB storage, 16MP rear camera and 5MP front camera.

While the rumored device is gaining in credibility, there’s no word yet on when it may launch.

Harvard/Columbia study for Yelp may influence level of European antitrust fines for Google

google-yelp-antitrust

A study commissioned by Yelp and carried out by two prominent U.S. academics has quantified the impact of Google giving prominence to its own services over organic results, reports the WSJ.

The study’s authors— Michael Luca of Harvard Business School and Tim Wu of Columbia Law School—found that users were 45% more likely to click on results that were ranked purely by relevance, rather than as Google ranks them now, with its own services displayed prominently.

The study of 2,500 Internet users said that the results provided empirical evidence that Google’s promotion of its own services resulted in lower-quality search results for consumers. Google, in contrast, had argued that its own specialist services can provide consumers with more precise answers to their queries.

Yelp was one of a number of companies that filed European antitrust complaints against Google five years ago, leading to a European Commission investigation that has been running ever since – with various attempts by Google to bring proceedings to and end. Some of these were rejected while others were accepted, but the EC finally decided in April to file charges against Google, before being told to expect large fines.

The results of this study may influence the level of these fines.

Google Street View goes vertical with rock climb up Yosemite’s famous El Capitan

Site default logo image

el-capitan

Yosemite’s El Capitan is one of the most famous rock-climbing locations in the world. Once considered impossible to climb, the 3000-foot route is still one of the most difficult climbs around. So naturally when the Google Street View team asked El Capitan veterans Lynn Hill, Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell to attempt it with the added challenge of 360-degree camera gear, they jumped at the chance.

Climbing is all about flirting with the impossible and pushing the boundaries of what you think you can be done. Capturing Street View imagery 3,000 feet up El Capitan proved to be an extension of that, especially when you take a camera meant for the inside of a restaurant and mount it thousands of feet up the world’s most iconic rock wall.

The imagery captured combines conventional stills of the climbers at work with the 360-degree cameras needed to allow you and I to join them in a virtual climb of the entire route …

When Google CEO Larry Page announced the formation of a new division, Sidewalk Labs, to “improve city life for residents, businesses and governments,” it was all a bit vague. Humans at fault as California’s DMV releases details of six self driving car accidents

Site default logo image

self-driving-car-accidents

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has released brief factual details of six accidents involving Google and Delphi self-driving cars, after the Associated Press successfully argued that legitimate public interest in the safety of the cars outweighed normal confidentiality rules. Self-driving cars were not found to be at fault in any of the accidents, and there were no injuries.

According to the reports, most of the cars were in self-driving mode when the accidents happened, and the other driver caused the accident. None of the crashes were serious enough to injure the person the state requires to sit behind the wheel, and the reports say none of the people in the other cars were treated for injuries either.

Five of the six accidents involved Google cars, and four of those were with the car in self-driving mode. The DMV was unaware of eight other accidents involving Google autonomous cars until the company shared the information during a conference call in April …

Former Google exec helping publishers fight back with innovative adblock-blocker

Site default logo image

sourcepoint

Few of us actively like ads, but most of us are smart enough to recognize that if we want free content, advertising is what pays the bills for the people providing it. But publishers face a growing threat from increasingly sophisticated ad-blockers that deprive them of revenue needed to remain in business. Even mobile networks and Apple are getting in on the action.

One former Google exec thinks he has the answer. Ben Barokas, former general manager of marketplace development at the search giant, is working on a new type of adblock-blocker that he thinks may not just help publishers, but also provide their readers with more choices …
