Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Experimental Moto Mod for Moto Z brings wireless charging & IR blaster in a super slim shell

Site default logo image

Motorola’s Moto Z was one of the more fascinating smartphones of last year, but as good as an idea as Moto Mods were, their potential was limited due to high prices and lack of compelling options.

Motorola isn’t giving up, however, as the company continues to assist some developers in building new options. One of those is the “Ultimate” Moto Mod, which aims to bring two highly desired features in a shell not much thicker than a Style Shell.

Project Fi integration might be coming to Voice, Google is ‘working on a solution’

Site default logo image

We were recently told by a source that has been reliable in the past (they also tipped us off on VoIP integration coming to Voice, which Google confirmed) that Project Fi support/integration would be one keystone feature for the new Google Voice. That feature obviously didn’t launch last week with the redesigned version 5.0 of the app, but we now have reason to believe that it’s still in the plans…

Pricing for LG’s upcoming Watch Style said to start at $249

Site default logo image

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I didn’t expect LG/Google’s upcoming Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches to be all that affordable. Personally, I expected LG to follow Motorola’s example with a starting price of at least $299. However, according to Android Police, the LG Watch Style may, in fact, be priced at just $249, at least to start with.

9to5Rewards: Huawei Mate 9, the first Huawei flagship Android phone for the US [Giveaway]

Update: The winner of our Huawei Mate 9 giveaway is Jordan Carter from Chicago, Illinois, who tweeted out one of our articles.

We announced 9to5Rewards over at 9to5Mac back in August of last year, and now — after a brief time in what we’d like to call a “beta” — it’s ramping up full time and coming over to 9to5Google! For our first giveaway, we’re giving away the Huawei Mate 9. It’s Huawei’s first flagship Android phone to officially come to the United States, and it could be yours — all you have to do is be an active reader!

We reviewed the international version of the phone when it launched last fall, and called it the first non-Nexus Huawei phone that’s great across the board. Huawei had a hit with the made-with-Google Nexus 6P a couple years ago, but now the company’s diving head-first into the US market with a flagship phone that we believe can rival Google’s own Pixel — which is one of the best phones ever.

BlackBerry’s ‘Mercury’ Android phone rumored to pack the same camera sensor as the Pixel [Update]

Site default logo image

Following its switch to Android, BlackBerry has released some solid devices, but nothing impressive. We have high hopes for the upcoming “Mercury,” which we saw at CES 2017 earlier this month, but it’s definitely going to have an uphill battle. Now, rumor has it the “Mercury” will bring the same camera sensor that is packed inside of Google Pixel and Pixel XL.

Opinion: The Huawei Mate 9 is the best Android alternative to Google’s Pixel XL

Site default logo image

I love the Google Pixel. Since the day I bought it I’ve been a fan of almost everything about it and even recommended it to some close friends. Despite how good the Pixel is, though, it’s important to remember that it’s not the only great Android smartphone on the market.

There are several others that are fantastic, and I’m lucky enough to have gotten my hands on most of them. After spending time with almost every major flagship smartphone released in the past several months, I can easily say that my favorite option that’s not the Pixel, is the Huawei Mate 9

Source: Google’s Pixel 2 to feature improved camera, CPU, higher price, but ‘budget’ phone also in works [Updated]

It feels like the first Google Pixel was just announced, but now we’re hearing more about the next-generation ‘Pixel 2’ from a source that has been reliable in the past. I mentioned yesterday that we previously heard Google Pixel would bring ‘waterproofing,’ a feature we’re now told is “still on the table.”

We’re also now being told, however, that Google is once again focusing intensely on the camera with Pixel 2, that the device is currently being tested with improved chipsets from two different manufacturers, and that it will bring a higher price. Finally, the same source says Google has lately been testing lower-end Pixel devices which would bring lesser specs and a much lower price tag.
