Google Allo 9.0 has arrived, and with it plenty of background changes that haven’t yet been enabled. A couple weeks ago we told you about some features we found evidence of in the last major version of Allo (like quick selfie, backup & restore, and more stickers), and this version of Allo seems to further prepare some of these and lay the groundwork for them to be enabled with a server-side switch…

Update: Google has seemingly blacklisted the exact sound bite from the ad. Home no longer responds to the question, unless you ask it yourself using your own voice.
Most of us are already annoyed enough with this one aspect of Google Home: It’s not smart enough to know that you’re — or at least someone authorized — the one trying to talk to it. That means it sometimes wakes you up demon-possessed in the middle of the night, and it means it sometimes mistakingly hears other background noise — like your TV, for instance — as trying to wake it up with the “OK Google” command. Starting today, this annoyance is going to get a lot worse.
Burger King will begin airing an annoying new ad during primetime television later today that is made to intentionally — yes, I said intentionally — trigger your Google Home or other Assistant-powered device into telling you about a burger…

If you’ve read any of my thoughts on Android Wear, you know that I’m not exactly bullish on the platform lately. I’ve still yet to keep a smartwatch on my wrist more than a month or two, and many I know share the same thought — is it worth the trouble if we always have our phones? It appears that Huawei rotating CEO Eric Xu Zhijun agrees with this sentiment, as he shared in a recent interview…

So this is nifty. Google is constantly adding actionable interfaces to its search results, and the latest addition (via SearchEngineLand) saves you a couple clicks for a common action: suggesting a webpage for Google to index. Now, you can submit a URL to Google directly from search…

The maker of the popular Vive virtual reality app SoundStage, Logan Olson, has joined the VR team at Google. Now, Logan is moving on…

The last time we talked about Google’s former self-driving car head Chris Urmson was back in the summer of 2016, and since then, he has gone on to found a stealth (also self-driving-related) startup by the name of Aurora Innovation. Now, SEC filings (via Axios) reveal that the startup has raised over $3 million in venture capital…

If you’re a user of Google Allo, you probably want to get as much as you can out of the still-fairly-rudimentary messaging app. One of the many features added lately is the ability to poll your friends with a quick “yes or no” question — but Google made it a bit less than straightforward to use. Here’s how to access it…
