Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

New images reportedly show off BlackBerry’s last QWERTY Android smartphone

Site default logo image

BlackBerry made its debut in the Android space just over a year ago (13 months tomorrow, in fact), but its efforts in the market haven’t been particularly successful. The BlackBerry Priv was a fantastic option and the DTEK50 and DTEK60 are solid, secure, affordable devices. Sales, though, aren’t all that impressive. That led to BlackBerry opting to pull itself out of the smartphone market entirely, but not without one more shot…

Samsung’s aggressive design on the Galaxy Note 7 could be to blame for explosions

Site default logo image

galaxy_note7_verizon_1

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will go down in the history books as one of the company’s biggest disasters. After having initial reports of batteries catching fire in September and then even having the replacement devices continue to catch on fire, Samsung had to officially recall and stop all production on the handset. As of today, Samsung still hasn’t released an official statement on why the Note 7 was defective but a 3rd party has torn the phone apart and we might finally have an answer…

New leaked photos show a forthcoming Moto phone, perhaps a 2017 Moto X

Site default logo image

Earlier this month we saw some images come out of techdroider.com purporting to show a forthcoming 2017 Moto phone. We were hesitant to share those because they were the first we had seen of a 2017 Moto phone. Now it appears that they are at least likely to be an early prototype of some kind of phone that Moto is releasing next year. Another pair of images of the new phone have now cropped up via an anonymous tipster for the same site…

Security vulnerabilities in AirDroid allow access to private data and sending of malicious files [Video]

AirDroid has been a popular service on Android for years, allowing users to easily and wirelessly access the files on their smartphone from a PC, mirror notifications, and send/receive text messages. However, security company Zimperium has been tracking some major security vulnerabilities in the app for a few months now, and they’re still not fixed…

Sony Xperia XZ, X Performance, Verizon LG G5 pick up Android Nougat

A little over 4 months after its release on Nexus devices, Android Nougat is finally starting to pick up steam after some pretty dismal distribution numbers during its first couple of months. Recently we’ve seen the likes of HTC updating unlocked devices, and LG updating international and local G5 units, Samsung pushing out betas, and even Huawei sub-brand Honor working to update devices to Google’s latest OS. Today, even more devices are picking up Android Nougat.

Google Pixel XL vs. OnePlus 3T: Easily two of the year’s best Android phones, but not easy to pick

Site default logo image

In my eyes, there are two standout Android phones for the second half of this year, and they serve slightly different target markets. The OnePlus 3T, the revamped version of the Chinese company’s OnePlus 3, brings a lot of high-powered specifications in an affordable package that’s super developer- and tinker-friendly and well-designed. The Google Pixel (XL, in this case), on the other hand, is a device that is similarly well-designed, but higher-priced, has compromises and is aimed at the average consumer — the kind of person who couldn’t care less about specs.

The problem is that a lot of people fall in between these two categories. They want a consumer-friendly phone that “just works”, and they also want a phone that has all the bells and whistles. They want a phone with a great camera and great battery life, but they also want a phone that they can tinker to their heart’s content and has as few compromises as possible at the lowest price-point possible. If you’re that person, you’re not going to go wrong with either of these choices. But let’s take a look real quick at the differences between the two phones if you still can’t decide.
