Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Huawei ‘doesn’t want to be on the crutch of Android,’ working on a mobile OS of its own

Site default logo image

We know that Samsung has slowly begun investing more into its own Tizen OS platform as of late (and recent rumors suggest that it could begin moving in that direction even more). But now it appears that yet another Android OEM has begun building its own mobile OS: Huawei. The Chinese company  “doesn’t want to be on the crutch of Android,” according to a report today from The Information, although people familiar with the project say it’s still early days…

VLC 2.0 launches w/ Android N support, video playlists, popup video mode, more

I remember back in the day when VLC was just the necessary media player for pretty much any Mac owner. Since then, the free and open source cross-platform multimedia player has expanded beyond Mac and PC to mobile devices running Android and iOS. Today, the VideoLAN organization has pushed out VLC for Android 2.0, and it’s probably the app’s biggest release since its first out-of-beta release in February of last year

Carl Pei responds to OnePlus 3 display criticism in rant, says ‘we’ve cut no corners’

We’ve heard a lot surrounding the OnePlus 3 in the past week and while most of it is good, there are some negative points. This of course is the case with any smartphone, but with the OnePlus 3 and the company’s previous efforts, these downsides — compromises, if you will — are seen by many as less like flaws and more just ways for OnePlus to cut corners and achieve its super affordable price points.

Now, it looks like OnePlus’ CEO Carl Pei is tired of hearing about it and has taken to Reddit to express his feelings on the matter…

Barclay’s own-brand Android Pay competitor goes live in the UK

After declaring its lack of interest in joining Google‘s new Android Pay system for contactless, phone-based payments, UK bank Barclays announced that it would make up for this by creating a similar service of its own, building on the NFC support for its own Barclaycards already started earlier this year.

And in fact, as of today, the service has quietly gone live

Huawei’s Honor 5C budget phone is coming to Europe this week for just £149

Site default logo image

At CES earlier this year, Huawei’s budget brand Honor launched its budget Honor 5X handset. Us and many others agree that the 5X is a great phone for the price, but suffers greatly in the software department. Now, Honor has announced a similarly-affordable phone dubbed the Honor 5C in Europe, and it starts at £149 (or about $220)…

OnePlus 3 w/ RAM fix takes on the Galaxy S7 again, this time with better results [Video]

Even with its 6GB of RAM, a YouTube comparison revealed last week that the OnePlus 3 still had a bit of trouble with multitasking. When compared with the Galaxy S7 Edge, the OnePlus 3 took marginally longer to store and reload apps from memory despite its supposed advantage on paper. Later the same week, the talents over at XDA developed a potential fix for this issue and now the same YouTuber who started this is back with the fix applied to show us how it improves things.

Review: Sony’s Xperia X is a great phone, but it’s hilariously overpriced [Video]

Sony’s Android smartphones have never truly been the best of the best, but picking up an Xperia from time to time has always been something I’ve enjoyed. Now in 2016, Sony has ditched their Xperia Z lineup in favor of the new Xperia X lineup. This new line brings a lot of changes, but is it worth your attention? I’ve been using Sony’s Xperia X for the past several days now, and here are some of my thoughts on it.

Google’s upcoming Allo and Duo apps just got slightly redesigned icons

In case you didn’t hear, Google is planning to launch a couple of new messaging apps in the “summer”: Allo and Duo. The former is a familiar messaging app that builds in support for some of Google’s machine learning and AI technologies (and some more quirky new features), and the latter is a super-simple one-to-one video calling app that boasts speed and encryption.

Now, with the apps’ launches coming just around the corner (“this summer”, Google says), Google has given both a new updated icon…

After years of inactivity, ADW Launcher 2.0 is here and it’s pretty great

There are dozens of great launchers for Android, however going back in time a few years, our choices were a bit different. One of the biggest players, and likely one many of us remember fondly, was ADW Launcher. It had tons of great features, but above all else it was fast, fun, and powerful. However that was a long time ago. ADW hasn’t seen an update since mid-2013, but now it’s back with a new design and some great new features.
