Friday 5: Reasons you should still buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 [Video]

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 February patch

Looking back at Samsung’s return to form with the Note 8 last year, it’s clear that cost was a significant reason it was unable to receive our unhindered recommendation in our initial review.

In this week’s Friday 5, we’re going to take a look at why the Note 8 is now a more compelling option for the budget-conscious tech enthusiast even with the flagship field being a packed one.

Samsung brings ‘video lockscreen’ feature to Galaxy Note 8 and S8 from Galaxy S9

Samsung hasn’t made any drastic changes to its hardware or software for the past year or so, but the company has been doing great with bringing new features to older devices. Recently, the company quietly brought its “video lockscreen” from the S9 to last year’s crop of devices.

Samsung adds nearly 30 new clockfaces to ‘Always-On Display’ on S8, S9, Note 8 w/ app

Samsung packs its devices full of features, some useful, some not. One of my personal favorites for the past few years has been the “Always-On Display” which debuted on the Galaxy S7. In recent releases and updates, Samsung has continually improved the feature. Now, Samsung is adding quite a few new customizations.

May security patch rolling out now to Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8 users on T-Mobile, Verizon [Update]

Android’s monthly security updates have done a great job in helping keep devices secure from the plethora of bugs that pop up from time to time. However, some are pretty slow about rolling them out. Today, T-Mobile and Samsung are rolling out May’s security patch to some devices.

Unlocked Galaxy S8 & Note 8 devices to get Android Oreo in ‘2-3 weeks’ as Samsung explains delay from carrier models

Samsung has slowly been rolling out Android Oreo to its flagship devices from last year, and last week we saw the S8 complete its rollout to major carrier variants. However, unlocked users have been left in the dark when it comes to that update, with Note 8 owners in the same boat. Thankfully, Samsung is finally acknowledging that and giving answers.

Galaxy Note 8’s dual-OIS cameras crush the Pixel 2, Mate 10 Pro, and iPhone X in vibration comparison [Video]

When it comes to smartphone cameras, everyone knows that just about any flagship will take a good shot. However, finding a camera that can truly do it all — from stills to video — isn’t easy. In a recent comparison, one reviewer discovered an interesting tidbit about the Galaxy Note 8’s camera, and with this feature it crushes the competition.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 in ‘Deep Sea Blue’ will be available in US on November 16th

Despite its massive price tag, the Galaxy Note 8 is still easily one of the best smartphones you can buy today. As with other devices from Samsung, however, it didn’t launch in the US with every color it was announced in. Now, Samsung has revealed that the Note 8’s “Deep Sea Blue” color is making its US debut.

Peel’s ultra-thin cases are now available for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 [Gallery]

Cases for smartphones come in all shapes and sizes, providing differing amounts of protection. While a rugged case might be best at keeping the Galaxy Note 8’s glass build from damage, these typically make an already large handset ginormous. Now if you want something ultra-thin, providing protection from minor scratches and scuffs while retaining the phone’s design, then Peel’s brand new cases might be for you…

Samsung Galaxy Note 8: Best rugged cases

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is one of the most beautiful and fantastic looking smartphones currently on the market. Unfortunately, its elegance comes at a price as its almost entirely made out of glass, something that easily scratches and cracks when dropped. Thankfully, there are plenty of rugged cases out there to protect your $1,000 investment. Here are the best…

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 ties the iPhone 8 Plus for the best mobile camera, but don’t forget, the Pixel 2 lands tomorrow

DxOMark is a recognized way — even if it doesn’t really mean all that much — to know how one mobile camera compares to another. Recently it’s been awarding higher scores than ever before to cameras hitting the market. Just last month the iPhone 8 Plus was crowned the king of mobile photography by a pretty solid margin, and today, the Galaxy Note 8 has just matched that camera.

Pixel Week: Pixel XL vs. Galaxy Note 8 [Video]

We’re excited to see Google unveil the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 next Wednesday, but the original Pixels are still some of the best smartphones on the market. With so many new trends like dual cameras and edge-to-edge displays popping up in 2017, we wanted to see how well the Pixel XL holds up against some of today’s modern flagships, in what we’re calling Pixel Week.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8: How to make and send animated live messages

When the Galaxy Note 8 came out, many criticized the handset for being too similar to Samsung’s larger Galaxy S8+. But the Note 8 had one big differentiator: its S Pen. This specialized stylus allows users to take notes, capture screenshots, and more. New this year is the ability to create and send animated messages in the form of GIFs. Here’s how to make them…

Review: Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s best productivity phone I can’t afford [Video]

Galaxy Note 8 March patch

The Galaxy Note 7 was poised to be one of 2016’s best phones, but when a dangerous hardware defect sent some models up in flames, Samsung was quickly forced to pull it from the market. It was eventually revived in the form of the Galaxy Note Fan Edition, but limited availability and an aging design kept it from being the resurgence to the Note brand Samsung needed. Enter the Galaxy Note 8.

Samsung modernized its latest flagship by bringing over design elements of its hugely popular Galaxy S8 and S8+, creating a new Note that feels fit for 2017. At a starting price of nearly $1000, however, it’s the priciest Note yet, and with so many new competing flagships on the horizon, it’s putting longtime fans and power users in a tough spot.

Samsung Galaxy S8, Active and Note 8: How to disable the Bixby button

Since its launch, users have been asking Samsung for a way to either disable to remap the physical Bixby button. Although the company has gone out of its way to block third-party applications that did remap the button, Samsung did recently push out an update that allows users to disable the physical Bixby button (to an extent)…

You can now sort of disable the annoying Bixby button on your Galaxy S8/Note 8

The Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 are all fantastic pieces of hardware, but just like anything else, they aren’t perfect. One of the biggest complaints in S8 reviews is the presence of the Bixby Button right below the volume rocker, and it seems Samsung has made a small change in response to the feedback.
