Android 5.0 Lollipop

See All Stories

Android Lollipop was the 5.0 release of Google’s mobile operating system. This version of Android launched with groundbreaking features, including an all-new “Material Design” language, enhancements to notifications, performance improvements, and more. Google called this release the biggest in Android history at the time, with over 5,000 completely new APIs.

Features |

Material Design

Google separated Lollipop from the strictly flat design of Apple’s iOS with Material Design, which allows developers to specify the “elevation values” of elements within apps — automatically creating shadow and perspective for the user. The company also updated its famed typeface Roboto, allowing developers to use one optimized font across a number of different platforms.

As part of Material, there are several animations for developers to use that include sleek visual feedback to freshen up the experience when users are navigating Android apps.

Notification Enhancements

Google also enhanced the notification experience in Lollipop, bringing full access to notifications right on the lock screen. Swiping down gives you the full list of notifications, essentially combining the lock screen and the notification pane. The company also introduced a completely new kind of notification called a “heads-up” that is really easy to dismiss or engage with.

Lock Screen Enhancements

Google also announced something called “personal unlocking” alongside Android Lollipop, which enables your device to determine whether or not it is in the owner’s hand. It can take advantage of locations, Bluetooth devices that are in range, and even voice. In the Keynote, the example of a Bluetooth watch was used and when the watch was removed, the device prompted for a passcode.

Performance Improvements

Android Lollipop also included a plethora of performance improvements. Lollipop runs on the “Art” runtime that was (first previewed with the release of Android 4.4 KitKat), which is truly cross-platform covering ARM, x86, and MIPS processor types. The runtime is fully 64-bit compatible, which brings “larger number registers,” “newer instruction sets,” and “increased addressable memory space.”

Better Graphics with Android Extension Pack

Android Lollipop also shipped with better graphics capabilities through something the Android Extension Pack. This set of capabilities includes tesselation, geometry shaders, computer shaders, and ASTC texture compression. The feature was demoed at the event with a video of EPIC’s Unreal Engine 4 desktop rendering pipeline running on Android Lollipop.

Battery Improvements

Rounding off the performance improvements in Android Lollipop was improved battery life. Project “Volta” was announced, which — amongst other features — improves the “instrumentation” of battery data through a tool called Battery Historian. Also announced is the JobScheduler API, which helps developers optimize power consumption in apps. And finally, Google added a “Battery Saver” mode in Lollipop which can be triggered manually or configured to be enabled automatically when the battery is low.

Android 5.0 Lollipop works with most Android phones released after mid-2014, and many that were released prior. Phones that shipped in 2016 onward likely shipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later, which you can read about here.

Android Lollipop rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S5 on Verizon

Verizon has always been one of the slower carriers to update their devices to the latest and greatest firmware, but today it seems that the company is breaking that tradition. The Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 started rolling out in some small international countries in December, but this is the first we’ve heard of an American carrier pushing the update.

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce an operating system update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This version brings Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TV’s, cars and wearables. The new material design offers complex animations, 3-D views and improved runtime.

You can find the announcement PDF for the update on Verizon’s website. In-mid-January, it was reported that Samsung was rolling out the update to the Galaxy S5 in the United Kingdom, following its tiered rollout in PolandSpain, Russia, and Malaysia. This update, notably, is Android 5.0, not Google’s latest official build, which is 5.0.2.

Lollipop update for HTC One (M8) and One (M7) delayed as HTC misses 90 day goal

The rollout of Android Lollipop to flagship devices is still happening more than 2 months after the update started rolling out OTA to Nexus devices, and now it appears that it’s going to be dragged out even longer—at least for HTC. The Taiwanese company set a 90 day goal for the release of Lollipop to carrier versions of the HTC One (M8) and (M7), but it doesn’t look like it’s going to meet that goal.

According to Mo Versi, the company’s Vice President of Product Management:

In the spirit of continued transparency, I wanted to share a quick update on where we’re at with our Android Lollipop rollout process. We’ve been working hard in the labs with Google and our carrier partners ever since the code release and are making great progress so far, but if you’ve been following the progress of this rollout you will know that Google has had to address several issues with this release. We’ve been diligently working to fix some of them on our end and incorporating Google’s fixes as quickly as possible, but despite everyone’s best efforts some carrier versions of the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) will not meet our 90 day goal, which is February 1st. While we are committed to delivering within this time period, we are even more committed to ensuring these updates result in an even better experience with your device because that is what the updates are intended to do.

The update has already rolled out to the Google Play, Unlocked, and Developer Editions of the One (M8). But updates for carrier versions of the device, which HTC promised in November would be getting Lollipop within 90 days, seem to have caught some snags. The company is “making great progross,” but it appears that Google has had to address “several” issues with this release.

Google CFO admits the company has been unable to keep up with Nexus 6 demand

During the company’s Q4 2014 earnings call, Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette addressed a few of the reasons for the company’s slower than expected quarter. Pichette said that one issue Google had was keeping up with demand the demand for the Nexus 6. Pichette noted that while the device was well received, the company simply couldn’t get the inventory to keep up with consumer demand.

HTC’s Jeff Gordon, the company’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, has taken to Twitter this morning to say that owners of the HTC One (M8) in Europe should be expecting to see Android Lollipop at some point very soon.

Users have been reporting back that the update hasn’t seemed to hit their devices yet, but Gordon says to keep checking as the update will be rolling out in waves.

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop OTA files start showing up for Nexus 7, here’s how to install them

We saw in late December that Google had published download links for the Nexus 7 (2012) factory images, but now it appears OTA update links are finally making the rounds. While not much is known about the specifics of what this update brings, Google has been fast to push this minor Lollipop revision to Nexus 7 owners. Many have reported that Lollipop brought reductions in performance, so if you’re one of those people, it might be a good idea to try this out and see if it will help.

Google posts Android 5.0.2 factory images for Nexus 10 & 2013 Nexus 7

Site default logo image

Google has just released Android 5.0.2 Lollipop factory images for the Nexus 10 and 2013 Nexus 7. Previously, Android 5.0.2 images had been available only for the 2012 Nexus 7. Today’s uploads for the 2013 WiFi-only Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 carry the same build number as the build released last month, LRX22G.

Google hasn’t provided any indication of what has changed in Android 5.0.2 for the 2013 Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, but don’t expect major changes seeing that it’s such a small numerical update. The factory images are available to download on Google’s developer site now and should begin to rollout over-the-air soon.

If you need help installing these factory images on your device, you can check out our guide here with all the details, but if you’re not the daring type, you might want to simply wait for the over-the-air update to hit.

Lollipop OTA rollout begins today for HTC One (M8) unlocked and developer editions

It looks like January is going to be the month of Lollipop for many Android device manufacturers, and that trend continues with the announcement from HTC’s VP of Product Management that the company has now received technical approval for the update and that it will be rolling out over-the-air to HTC One (M8) unlocked and developer editions starting tonight.

The Android 5.0 update for HTC device isn’t going to be just an update to Lollipop, though, as the company is also launching its Sense 6 skin atop the latest version of Google’s mobile OS. We got a peek at Sense 6.0 running on the HTC One (M8) late last month, which should probably give you a pretty good idea of what today’s update is bringing.

Earlier today we learned that Samsung is rolling out Android 5.0 to the Galaxy S5 in the UK, and also touched on the fact that Android 5.0.2 is today hitting the second generation Moto G.

Motorola says it will update its 2013 & 2014 devices to Lollipop “really soon”

Motorola’s quest to update its devices to Lollipop has gone anything but smoothly so far. The company started its efforts with the 2nd generation Moto X Pure Edition, but quickly learned that it had some more work to do when users started reporting a plethora of bugs. In a statement on Google+ this evening, however, a Motorola software engineer said that devices from 2013 and 2014 can expect their updates “really soon.”

CES 2015: Asus Zenfone 2 first impressions and hands-on (Video)

We got a chance to go hands-on this morning with the Asus Zenfone 2 at CES in Las Vegas, and I think I’ve come to the conclusion that this is one of the most notable smartphones to ever come from the Taiwanese company. Forget the fact that this device is the first smartphone in the world to come with 4 GB of RAM and consider this: At $199, this device, even without its headlining feature (which the base model is notably lacking anyway), is now by far the best $199-level phone on the market.

The update to Android 5.0 for the Galaxy S5 has been slowly rolling out across a variety of not-United-States countries over the last month, starting with Poland and then more recently making its way to Spain. Now, preceding what will soon be the software update’s widespread availability, devices in Russia and Malaysia are being offered (via SamMobile) some Lollipop goodness.

We already know that Android 5.0 Lollipop is likely on its way to Samsung’s current lineup of devices soon (in fact, it’s already hitting devices over-the-air in Spain and Poland). But now, thanks to a post on Reddit from a user claiming to be a Samsung employee, we have a tidbit of information that pinpoints January as the month that will begin to happen in more countries around the world.

Android 5.0.1 already landing on the NVIDIA Shield tablet

We told you last month that the NVIDIA Shield tablet would be getting Lollipop, and that time has since come and gone. Now, while most recently-released devices already have Lollipop (or are in line to get it soon), attention has been turned to see which devices are going to be first to get Google’s first bug fix release, 5.0.1. Most of the Nexus devices have received it already (and you can get those from Google’s factory image download page), but it appears NVIDIA is also making sure its Shield tablet receives a timely update.

Galaxy Note 2 will get Lollipop according to Samsung’s Finnish website

Every time a major new version of Android rolls around, it’s always uncertain whether or not older devices will be updated—and it’s always left in the hands of each individual manufacturer to make these happen. Devices older than a couple of years are usually forgotten, but sometimes there are exceptions to this rule. And a good example of that is what was found this morning: information on Samsung’s Finnish website suggesting that the Galaxy Note 2 will indeed be getting Lollipop.

AnTuTu Benchmark gets 5.5 update w/ 64-bit CPU testing, new design

AnTuTu is likely a familiar name to you, as it’s probably one of the biggest sources of device specification leaks (most recently, a prototype Galaxy S6 was purportedly noticed). But unless it’s your job to test devices, it’s probably not likely that you actually use the AnTuTu Android app on a daily basis. Today, AnTuTu has updated said app to bring a completely new UI, support for 64 bit CPU testing, and a variety of bug fixes.
