What is Google Stadia?

Stadia was a streaming service that leverages Google’s vast cloud infrastructure to deliver AAA and indie games alike over the web without needing specialized gaming hardware. This ambitious effort follows in the footsteps of the company’s other large platforms: Search, Chrome, and Android. Google hopes to bring this form of entertainment to the next billion gamers by removing various limitations that exist today.

What happened to Google Stadia?

In September 2022, Google announced the closure of its Stadia platform. The cloud gaming platform later shut down on January 19, 2023. Refunds were issued to customers for the cost of games, add-ons, and Stadia hardware such as the Stadia Controller.

Most games on Stadia were already available on other platforms, and the few Stadia exclusives have mostly expanded to other platforms as well.

In April 2023 it was confirmed that Phil Harrison, the former head of Google Stadia, had left the company.

Stadia reportedly surpasses 3 million app downloads with a big boost in late 2020

Google’s cloud gaming platform, Stadia, kicked off with a rough launch that’s been followed by a year and a half of adding games and features and, unfortunately, closing its first-party studios before releasing any games. After a Googler said that the platform is “alive and well” last week, a new report seems to back that up with claims that Stadia has surpassed 3 million app downloads.

2021’s first half has been full of disheartening news for Google Stadia since the closure of Stadia Games & Entertainment (SG&E) earlier this year and most recently with the departure of John Justice earlier this month. Many have questioned the staying power of the product, but according to Google, Stadia is still “alive and well” and has taken on a new product lead.

When the new Chromecast with Google TV launched in late 2020, the product came with the promise that Google Stadia would be supported sometime in the first half of 2021. That deadline is just six weeks away at this point, so the clock is certainly ticking for Google to take action. Let’s take a look at where things stand.

Several Google Stadia staff members join Jade Raymond’s Sony-backed ‘Haven’ studio

After news broke earlier this week that Google Stadia’s product lead John Justice left the company, it’s been revealed that more names are on their way out. Several more staff members from Google Stadia, and specifically Stadia Games & Entertainment, have left the company to join “Haven,” a Sony-backed studio by their former boss, Jade Raymond.

Epic Games apparently offered Fortnite for Stadia in exchange for free access to Play Store

fortnite

Epic Games launched Fortnite on Android in 2018 without putting the game in Google’s Play Store; you know, that place where it’s safe and easy to get apps on any Android phone. The reason was that Google, like Apple and others, takes a cut of revenue for in-app purchases on apps and games within the Play Store. As it turns out, Epic Games was considering methods of bargaining with Google about the Play Store cut that, apparently, meant Fortnite for Stadia was at one time an actual possibility.

Opinion: Actually, the new ‘Mighty’ browser is the ‘Chrome Cloud Tabs’ feature I’ve been waiting for

Mighty browser

Mighty is a new browser project that puts Google Chrome in the cloud and streams it to your PC. While I don’t know if Mighty will end up making sense for my personal situation, it does perfectly resemble a product I’ve found myself hoping Google itself would build as a feature in Chrome. How worthwhile is Mighty itself, though? And will (should) Google copy it?

Cyberpunk 2077 for Google Stadia

Listen to CD Projekt Red’s CEO laugh nervously when asked how Cyberpunk 2077 sold on Stadia

The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was rough, to say the least, but it actually highlighted the strength of Stadia at an opportune time. Unfortunately, it seems that boost didn’t really do a lot for the bottom line, as in an earnings call this week, it was heavily implied that Cyberpunk 2077 sales on Stadia weren’t amazing… through laughter.
