Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Moto Z Play and Nextbit Robin pick up Android 7.1.1 upgrades

When budget Android smartphones hit the market, they don’t often come with the promise of lots of future updates. Motorola has done well in the past with this, and startup Nextbit pushed well over a dozen updates to the Robin. Now, both of these companies are pushing Google’s latest OS to very affordable and solid Android smartphones ─ the Nextbit Robin and Moto Z Play.

Review: LG X Venture is AT&T’s new affordable, indestructible phone [Video]

Shiny glass designs are great, but some people want something a little less fragile. The V10 was one of my favorite designs from LG because it ignored the trends of glass and aluminum and instead used a rubberized plastic back with stainless steel rails to achieve a rugged but still premium feel.

The X Venture is LG’s latest midrange offering coming to AT&T, reviving the V10’s sturdy design and adding even more durability with a focus on outdoor living.

Samsung’s Bixby still doesn’t have a virtual assistant … but does it really even matter?

Galaxy S7 october 2019 security patch

During the Galaxy S8 unveiling, Samsung made a big deal about Bixby, its new AI interface with the bold claim of being able to carry out any task on the phone using just your voice. Most virtual assistants can only do simple voice commands like initiating calls, changing songs, or opening apps, but waver in functionality when asked to change system settings or perform complex tasks. Bixby promised to do all of this, but many were disappointed when the virtual assistant wasn’t available on the Galaxy S8 and S8+ at launch.

In its current state, Bixby is able to identify objects in the camera viewfinder (sometimes) and aggregate news in a Flipboard-like side page on the home screen … and that’s about it. Initially, Bixby’s virtual assistant update was supposed to be available in late May, but June starts tomorrow and according to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung is still weeks away from being ready.

Motorola teases upcoming phone launch set for tomorrow

Yesterday afternoon, Motorola Canada took to Twitter to tease its “next bold phone,” set for a June 1st announcement. We’re not sure what exactly this new phone could be, which I actually love — I’ve grown tired of every new phone being leaked in full days, weeks, or even months before their announcement. But a few possibilities stand out.

However, the company has recently discontinued those devices to make room for the upcoming OnePlus 5. Now, we’re getting confirmation that the company won’t be leaving them behind, confirming Android O for both phones.

Comment: How BlackBerry fixed the Keyone ahead of its launch today

BlackBerry’s big release for 2017 is the Keyone, and it has all the potential of being the best phone the company has ever released. In my review earlier this month, I had a lot to say about the device, some of it good, some of it bad. However, now that we’re on the day of launch, I thought it’d be worthwhile to take another quick look at the phone now that the company has been able to adjust things under the hood.

LG V30 ‘Project Joan’ renders show us what 2017’s second LG flagship could look like

LG’s flagships have typically come out on a twice-a-year schedule for the last few years; the G Series hits in the spring, and the V series hits in the fall. While the G series has typically been LG’s “mainstream” flagship offering, the V series has instead gone above and beyond in terms of sheer features and adds things — like its second screen — for those who might want more.

If the latest early concept renders of the forthcoming LG V30 are anything to go off of, the V30 might be the biggest departure from the norm we’ve seen yet with that lineup…

LG reportedly working with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon 845 for the LG G7

LG had a tough choice to make with the LG G6. With the Snapdragon 835 tied up in the Galaxy S8, the company needed to either wait or release with last year’s hardware. I think it made the right choice going with the Snapdragon 821, but it puts a glaring difference between the G6 and S8 on paper. Now, LG seems to be working to make sure this doesn’t happen next year as the company is apparently collaborating with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon 845.
