Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Opinion: Five features that I want with the second-generation Google Pixel

Site default logo image

We’re constantly on the search for the “perfect” smartphone, but it’s still impossible — and will likely remain as such — to even get close in that endeavor. Google’s Pixel smartphones came as close as any smartphone before, in my eyes at least, but they were still very flawed phones with tons of room for improvement.

What made the Pixel so great? As we detailed in our review, it really came done to the software and performance. Google created a phone that offered performance and reliability on Android like we had never seen before. Combine that with a clean Android interface, useful features like “Moves” and Google Assistant, and top it all off with one of the best cameras ever on a smartphone, and it becomes clear that you’ve got an amazing smartphone….

Google testing complete redesign of ‘My Apps’ section of Google Play, includes sort option

Site default logo image

Before Google ever pushes out a major update to any of its applications, the company sends a ‘dogfood’ build of the app to their internal beta testers to get their feedback on new features, designs, or anything else. It appears that Google is currently beta testing a brand new Play Store update that revamps the ‘My Apps’ section…

How to download, add, rearrange, and remove widgets on Google Pixel

Widgets have long been a hallmark feature for Android. When comparing the two major mobile platforms at face value, it has always been — at least until the most recent updates to iOS — easy to say that customizable widgets are one of the reasons you might want an Android phone over an iPhone. Well, widgets haven’t gone anywhere. They’re still around on Google’s new Pixel phone, and here’s how to manage them…

Here’s a look at a near-final LG G6 in the flesh with a super glossy back

Site default logo image

We’re just a few weeks away from LG’s launch of the LG G6, and as we get closer, the leaks continue to pour out. Recently we’ve seen renders showing off thin bezels, some very unfinished prototypes, and even heard details on the phone’s specs. Today, though, Business Insider has gotten its hands on a new image of the G6, showing us a near-final unit for the first time.

Huawei says Android Nougat w/ EMUI 5.0 will hit Honor 6X in March

When the Honor 6X was unveiled at CES, we were disappointed to see that it would be shipping with a much older version of the company’s Android skin — EMUI 4.1. Although the 6X is a budget handset, it was unfortunate to hear that a phone launched in 2017 would reach customers running Marshmallow. Today, Honor has confirmed that it will begin rolling out the EMUI 5.0/Nougat update to the Honor 6X in March…

Sony beats Google’s Pixel, begins pushing out Feb. security patch to several Xperia phones

Every month Google gives device manufacturers an updated build of Android with security patches that remove vulnerabilities and fixes bugs. Although we normally see these patches hitting Pixel and Nexus devices first, it would appear that Sony is on top of its game this month and is already rolling out the February security patch to several of its handsets before it arrives on any of its competitor’s devices…

Latest Instagram beta brings photo gallery support to some, but it’s not fully functional

A common advertisement type on Instagram is a post that features more than one image, something that regular users are not able to do. While regular users can, of course, stick images together,  this feature is one that allows you to swipe side-to-side to see separate photographs within a single post.

It appears, however, that this feature will soon rollout to the public…
