Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Should Android apps have the navigation bar on the top or bottom of the screen? [Poll]

Site default logo image

There is a new trend in which developers have started to move the placement of the navigation bar within their apps. Before, if an Android app had a navigation bar, it most likely would have been placed on the top of the screen. Recently, though, we have started to see more apps move it to the bottom of the screen, much like how apps are designed for iOS. Do you think apps look and work better with the navigation bar placed on the top or bottom of the screen?

Images of a dual-camera Samsung Galaxy S8+ prototype show up online

In the smartphone market, if one company is highly successful at implementing a new feature, we tend to see more devices pop up in the wild with something similar. One such feature that is showing up more and more is dual-cameras. That’s why when the Galaxy S8 rumors started to make their rounds, some were speculating that Samsung would include dual-cameras in its upcoming flagship. While this didn’t happen, new photos show that the company was at least experimenting with the idea…

How to update your smartwatch to Android Wear 2.0 manually using OTA downloads

Site default logo image

Google began the process of rolling out Android Wear 2.0 to a plethora of smartwatches all the way back in February. This latest update brings many enhancements and refinements, but most notable are its revamped UI, on-watch Play Store, and watch face complications. If you’re hoping try out the new features of Android Wear’s latest but haven’t received the OTA update yet, you can try to manually install it on some watches with ADB tools…

The Moto Z2 Force likely won’t be a Verizon exclusive, may come to T-Mobile

Last year’s Moto Z was a pretty solid phone, but I don’t think anyone can deny that the Moto Z Force was better. With improved battery life, the shatterproof display, and a more comfortable build, it was just no contest. Except for one thing. The Moto Z Force was an exclusive to Verizon. The Moto Z2 Force, though, may change that.

If you could, what specs would you upgrade in your smartphone? [Poll]

Site default logo image

Whenever new devices come out, there are companies like iFixIt that tear them apart and attempt to see how difficult it is to repair them. In these cases, though, they are only looking at how easy it is to repair broken screens, replace batteries, and fix other minor aspects of the device.

Today, we received a report of a Nexus 5X owner who was able to successfully double the amount of installed RAM from 2GB to 4GB. A while back, another user even upgraded his Nexus 5 with extra storage. If it was possible, would you manually swap out the preinstalled internal hardware for something newer and more powerful?

A Nexus 5X user upgraded his device to 4GB of RAM and everything still works

Site default logo image

Google and LG’s Nexus 5X was never meant to be the best Android device on the market when it launched in 2015, but it accomplished its goal of being a spiritual successor to the popular Nexus 5. However, it wasn’t without shortcomings. Most were easy to look past, but LG’s decision to limit RAM to just 2GB was certainly odd, and annoying to say the least. Now, though, a Nexus 5X user has upgraded that to 4GB, and everything still works on his phone…

Samsung is working on the Galaxy S8 Active for AT&T, not that you should be surprised

There’s no doubt that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are impressive smartphones, but they aren’t perfect for everyone. The metal and glass design, regardless of the strength of the glass, is going to lead to some broken panels for some. However, it seems that users will still have a choice this year, as Samsung is apparently developing another “Active” version of the Galaxy S8.

Should Google offer a dark theme on all of its apps? [Poll]

Site default logo image

Android is all about customization and allowing users to change the operating system to fit their style. For this reason, custom builds of Android allow for users to enable dark themes throughout the operating system and some app developers have also built dark themes into their apps.

Although it isn’t live in the YouTube mobile app, today we did see the option pop up allowing for a dark theme on the desktop. Do you think Google should build dark themes into all of the company’s applications?

Google’s WebVR now compatible with Cardboard, new experiments website [Video]

Back in June of 2016, it was revealed that Google was working on a way to make virtual reality accessible from every web browser, dubbed WebVR. Then, with the release of Chrome 56 Beta, Google started to allow developers to begin testing their WebVR projects on the web. Today, Google has published 12 WebVR experiments for users to test out not only with Daydream headsets but also those with Cardboard…
