Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Samsung says the Galaxy S8’s ‘red tint’ issue is not a defect, simply the nature of AMOLED

Site default logo image

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are easily two of the best phones you can buy today, if not the best. However, since their debut, many customers have been running into issues with a “red tint” on the display. Now, Samsung has come out with another statement to say that this issue is not a defect…

Some Galaxy S8 owners are having trouble with fast wireless charging

Site default logo image

The Galaxy S8 may not have the best battery life on a smartphone today, but it makes up for that with just about every charging method available. You’ve got standard and fast charging over USB-C, as well as compatibility with both Qi and PMA wireless charging. Further, the device includes fast wireless charging, but some users seem to be running into issues with that functionality…

Galaxy S8 teardown suggests Samsung worked on OIS for its front camera [Video]

Site default logo image

Samsung’s new Galaxy S8 and S8+ are two fantastic Android smartphones, and part of the reason for that is that they pack just about every top-of-the-line feature you would ever want.

However, it seems there’s one more interesting feature that Samsung might have been working on before shipping the phone that never quite made it to launch…

No, Motorola is probably not switching to the ZUI skin for upcoming devices (in the US, at least)

Site default logo image

Some of the best aspects of almost any Motorola device over the past few years have been fast updates and clean software. While the former of those is long gone, clean software is still very much present. Now, a sketchy report making its way through the Android blogosphere misleadingly suggests that Moto is ditching that for a heavy-handed custom software layer over Android.

That concern, which seems to be spreading quickly, is pretty much unfounded…

This app can still remap the Bixby button on the Galaxy S8 to anything you want — sort of

Site default logo image

As I stated in my Galaxy S8 review the other day, Samsung’s new digital assistant, Bixby, is pretty pointless right now. Its functionality is very limited, to say the least, and it certainly isn’t worthy of its own physical button. Past attempts to remap that button to something else have been blocked, but there’s one that still works and it’s an app called “Bixby Button Remapper.”

Bixby Vision’s ability to shop on Amazon is missing from the Galaxy S8 on Verizon

Site default logo image

Samsung went all in with its virtual assistant called Bixby by adding a physical button to the left side of the handset that isn’t supposed to be remapped to do anything else. Unfortunately, though, at the time of the Galaxy S8’s launch, Bixby is not complete. Now, according to Cnet and other independent sources, it looks like Bixby is even less operational on those Galaxy S8 units from Verizon…

Are you picking up the Galaxy S8/S8+ or are you waiting for the Note 8 (or something else)? [Poll]

Site default logo image

Last year, before its eventual recall and discontinuing, the Note 7 seemed like the phone to beat. It not only packed in everything that people loved about the Galaxy S7 but it also featured some neat new tricks thanks to its S-Pen. Unfortunately, it was discontinued but now we have the Galaxy S8. With the Note 7’s reputation of being one of the best phones of 2016 (minus the whole battery exploding situation), are you going to pick up the Galaxy S8 or wait for the presumably even better Note 8?

Although it hasn’t quite been a year since the phones were announced, leaks and rumors of the Moto Z2 Play are starting to make the rounds. Today, Technobuffalo got its hands on a photo of the successor to last year’s Moto Z Play…

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ update to come next week to fix the ‘red tint’ problem

Site default logo image

Although the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ were not officially available until today, that didn’t stop some carriers mailing out handsets a little early. While most users appear to be happy with their brand new smartphones, some people noticed that the display has a slightly red tint. Samsung now plans on pushing out an update next week to address these complaints…
