Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Some developers on Google Play are discounting apps to previously-unseen price of 1 cent

Site default logo image

Google Play Store Icon

Google usually works with developers toward the end of each year to offer some big app/game discounts, and this year is no different. Google has several big name games on sale for up to 80% off, but there are sales on several other games through the Play Store as well, including a couple which are notably cheaper than the rest…

Android Basics: How to enable the app drawer on the Huawei Mate 9

huawei_mate9_1

In the past, one of the biggest complaints about EMUI — Huawei’s skinned version of Android — is the fact that it didn’t have an application drawer and would litter homescreens with app shortcuts. The only way to gain an app drawer was by installing a third-party launcher. Thankfully, with the release of EMUI 5.0 on Huawei’s Mate 9, there is a setting that can enable a native app drawer without requiring you to download anything…

As 2016 comes to a close, all attention is being shifted toward next year’s flagships. Whether or not we’ll get that remains to be seen, but today we’re learning a lot more about LG’s upcoming flagship.

Prior to the release of the Google Pixel, one of the best Android smartphones on the market was the premium, powerful, and affordable Nexus 6P. However, the reputation of that device is certainly going downhill with several issues popping up as the phone ages. Now, some Nexus 6P owners are reporting a bootloop issue on their devices.

Sketchy rumor suggests ‘Galaxy S8 Plus’ to come with a 6-inch display to fill the Note 7 gap

Site default logo image

galaxy_note7_alwayson_1

Following the demise of the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung’s release of the Galaxy S8 became that much more important. Not only does Samsung have to create a phone to win customers back, but also fill the gap left in the market from the Note 7. Now, it appears that Samsung is planning to bring a larger display to the Galaxy S8 to help fill at least one aspect of that gap.

Android skins from Chinese OEMs have always been pretty bad, and Huawei has always been one of the worst contenders. Despite releasing awesome hardware, it’s always been hard to recommend the company’s devices due to the software. With the release of Nougat, though, things are improving, and now we know when Honor 8 users can expect that update.

Every day we walk around with potential death-traps in our pockets ─ they’re called our smartphones. Each and every smartphone ever made has the potential to explode, and sometimes they do. For the most part, the batteries in our smartphones are safe. So why does everyone suddenly care whenever a smartphone does explode? The Galaxy Note 7.

Earlier this year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 which, by any normal measurement, was its best smartphone ever. It packed powerful specs, all the features we could ever want, a pleasing design, and software that was finally good. Overall, it truly was a great smartphone, until they started exploding

Custom ROM w/ Viper4Android audio mod fixes Google Pixel audio distortion for some [Video]

We told you a couple days ago that some Google Pixel users — including two of us here at 9to5Google — are experiencing a weird audio distortion problem when playing different media at high volumes. Now, it appears that some tinkerers have found a temporary workaround as we wait for Google to fix the issue — and the good news is that it’s solely a software fix…
