Android tablets have not seen a significant update in ages, but Motorola is reportedly working on one that features a new “Productivity Mode.” However, it appears that the software takes a lot of inspiration from parent company Lenovo’s tablets.
Some of the best aspects of almost any Motorola device over the past few years have been fast updates and clean software. While the former of those is long gone, clean software is still very much present. Now, a sketchy report making its way through the Android blogosphere misleadingly suggests that Moto is ditching that for a heavy-handed custom software layer over Android.

With improved battery life, the shatterproof display, and a more comfortable build, it was just no contest. Except for one thing. The Moto Z Force was an exclusive to Verizon. Early last year, Lenovo announced that it would phase out Motorola branding for ‘Moto by Lenovo.’ A year later, the Chinese parent company is backtracking and fully returning to the storied brand for future products.
While Lenovo’s strategy for high-end devices hasn’t convinced me, their idea of what a midrange or budget phone should do and be (and, most importantly, cost) is still more than valid. After all, it’s not too distant from the original Moto G’s philosophy, which was good and hasn’t changed much since.

Alongside the Moto G5 and G5 Plus announcements, Lenovo unveiled some new Moto Mods at its MWC event today. The company stressed during its presentation that Mods have become hugely important to the Moto brand since their launch with the Moto Z, and it’s introduced new partners to bring even more features to its flagship-tier devices.
Following a number of leaks, including specs, hardware, and even the retail packaging, Lenovo finally announced the Moto G5 and G5 Plus today at MWC 2017. The Moto G5 continues the company’s successful G series of affordable smartphones, now bringing even more premium features like a metal design and a fingerprint sensor previously found only on the G Plus and Z series.

Earlier today Lenovo unveiled a new version of its Yoga Book tablet from last year, the Yoga A12. The new larger, more affordable machine offers lesser specifications, but with the added screen real-estate and larger footprint the update makes total sense. My biggest question? Why is this not a Chromebook?

Update: Republic Wireless has posted on its community forums that Motorola is currently rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat as a soak test to a limited number of unlocked Moto Z devices. In the post, the mobile carrier also confirmed that Motorola should rollout the update to all unlocked Moto Z models on February 17 if everything goes as planned.
Motorola hasn’t been as good as they once were when it came to updating their handset in a timely manner. Years ago, some of their phones had been updated to the latest version of Android even before Nexus devices. However, it wasn’t anywhere near perfect. Now, it looks like Lenovo is giving the form factor another shot with a new Yoga Book model, this time with a larger display and more affordable price point.
Going into 2017, not much is known about Lenovo’s upcoming Moto lineup. The company reportedly opted out of making a new Moto 360 for Android Wear 2.0‘s launch, while their flagship device has yet to leak. However, Moto is planning (via CNET) an event on February 26th at MWC.
Late last year, renders claimed that Lenovo was reviving the Moto X in 2017. Images have surfaced today from somebody claiming to be selling an identical looking phone. However, the key difference is that the device in question is apparently the Moto G5 Plus.
