Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Some Harry Potter magic is coming to your Android phone w/ Google’s voice commands, Maps & Daydream

Remember when, a day before Google’s massive hardware event, Verizon‘s website leaked the Pixel and included a rather unspecified “Google Magic” feature? Well, that never turned out to be actually anything, unless that was the carrier’s way of referring to the Assistant.

However, that doesn’t mean that some magic hasn’t found its way to Android

Firmware is what’s keeping the Nexus 5X/6P from supporting Pixel’s fingerprint gestures [Update: Google is ‘evaluating’ an update]

google nexus 6p

Google’s Pixel smartphones support a handful of features that the Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X don’t. Why not? According to Google, the hardware doesn’t support at least some of them — namely Night Light and Fingerprint “Moves.” Google confirmed outright last month that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X physically couldn’t support fingerprint gestures since they require the new fingerprint sensor…

Feature Request: Four ways that Google Pixel’s fingerprint sensor could be much more useful

Feature Request is a 9to5Google series where authors offer their opinion on how to improve popular hardware or software products.

One feature we’ve seen floating around the Android space for the past year or so ─ most recently on Google’s Pixel smartphones ─ is fingerprint quick actions. Since picking up my Pixel, I’ve been heavily using that feature to access my notifications and quick settings, and it’s great, but I feel it could be more useful if it had a few more tricks. Let me explain…

How to bring fingerprint sensor quick actions from Pixel and Huawei to your device

Site default logo image

A feature that we have seen on the Honor 8 and now the Google Pixel is the ability to swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to bring down the notification shade. While Google has confirmed that the gesture would not make its way to Nexus devices, a developer has made an application that will bring the feature to any phone running Android 6.0 or above with a fingerprint sensor.

LG V20 Review: For spec-hungry Android enthusiasts, it’s the best Android phablet you can buy [Video]

2016 has been a tough year for the Android market. In previous years we couldn’t count on one hand the number of awesome devices, but this year there have only been a few to choose from. The Galaxy S7, specifically the Edge has stood out as a clear winner, despite the praise given to competing devices like the HTC 10. On the other hand, no one really cared about LG this year. The G5 was a flop by every definition.

Now in late 2016, there still isn’t much to pick from. The Galaxy Note 7 was close to perfection, and then it literally exploded in Samsung’s face. Google’s Pixel aims to fill the void, and redefine what an Android smartphone can and should be. However, if you’re not looking to get a Pixel, the LG V20 is 100% what you should be looking at, especially if you’re aiming for a big phone. Let’s take a closer look.

Android Basics: How to turn on and adjust Night Light settings on the Google Pixel

One of the trends in today’s technology is the ability to remove the blue tints from the screens that we are staring at all day long. The reason for this is partially because studies have shown that we have a hard time falling asleep after our eyes have been subject to the blue light. With Android 7.1 shipping on the Pixel, Google has included a feature called Night Light which will tint the screen red and cut out some of the harmful blues…
