Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Comment: An on-watch Play Store is pointless if you never use smartwatch apps

Site default logo image

I’ve had my LG Watch Style for a week now, and my thoughts are mostly positive. Like we said in our review, the Watch Style is Android Wear for those who want the basics done well, and I agree with that conclusion. It really is a basic watch, and it really does perform those basic functions better than any Android Wear watch I’ve tried.

But after a week of using the LG Watch Style (and Android Wear 2.0), I’ve been thinking about one thing that I haven’t seen people talk about. I never used most of the smartwatch apps on my previous Android Wear watches, and I never use most of the apps on my LG Watch Style. So what good does one of Android Wear 2.0’s biggest features — an on-watch Play Store — really do?

The Samsung Galaxy S8’s bezel-less display could be called ‘Infinity Display’

Site default logo image

We’re looking forward to the full debut of the Samsung Galaxy S8 later this month, but ahead of that reveal, we’re still getting plenty of new information about the device. As we’ve seen in multiple leaks, and as Samsung has basically confirmed itself, the Galaxy S8 is going to come with a nearly bezel-less display. Apparently, that display will be marketed as “Infinity Display.”

Auto white balance coming to Google Photos this week on Android, desktop, soon for iOS

Google Photos has long been one of my favorite services from the company, mostly because it just works so well. Then, to make things even better, Google goes and adds new features that I didn’t even know I needed. Now, the company has revealed in a blog post that the service will be picking up a new editing feature ─ auto white balance.

Android Nougat is now rolling out to the Moto G4/G4 Plus in the US

One of the biggest downsides to buying a budget Android smartphone is their software updates. On most cheap devices, they’re never guaranteed. Motorola’s Moto line used to be the place you could go to solve that problem, but that’s changed over the last couple years. Now, though, last year’s Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus are finally being updated to Android Nougat in the US…

Do you like that Google Assistant is replacing Google Now on Tap? [Poll]

Site default logo image

Announced during Mobile World Congress, Google is expanding Assistant to more phones running Android Marshmallow or higher. This is a huge move on Google’s part as the virtual assistant was previously only running on the Pixel, Android Wear 2.0 watches, and the Home. The problem with the Google Assistant, though, is that it removes Now on Tap. Do you think that is for the better?

Comment: As a stock Android lover, the Huawei P10’s EMUI left me emotionless

Site default logo image

Following its press conference at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, Huawei was kind enough to hand out some units of the just-announced P10 smartphone, one of which I got ahold of. I have been using it ever since, and coming from a Pixel (and a tradition of vanilla or near-stock Android devices before that) I thought I couldn’t help but feel strongly about the EMUI. That, however, didn’t’ turn out to be the case.

So here are a few things I liked about it, and some that, instead, didn’t really click…

The service has improved a lot since it first debuted last year, and things are only looking to get better with future updates. Today, though, Google is announcing some new enhancements to Allo…

Hot off the heels of its MWC 2017 event, Samsung has recently debuted another new device ─ the mid-range Samsung Galaxy Xcover 4. While this probably won’t be coming to the US market anytime soon, this is certainly one of the more interesting mid-rangers we’ve seen from the company in a while.

132 apps on Google Play were infected with malware, from the wrong OS…

Site default logo image

While it’s pretty rare that you’ll come across malware on Android, sometimes it slips through the cracks and presents a threat. Recently, though, a security firm made an interesting discovery ─ 132 apps on Google Play had been secretly hiding the capability to infect user devices with malware. Specifically, malware designed for Windows…

BMW has no plans to adopt Android Auto, 2017 Subaru Impreza added to official site

Site default logo image

There are a lot of things to love about Android Auto, but unfortunately, it’s not available on all vehicles. The list of car makers adding the system to their vehicles is ever-growing, but some aren’t giving in. That’s the case with BMW, who recently confirmed it has no plans to adopt Android Auto on any of its models.

Honor is recruiting US beta testers for Android Nougat/EMUI 5.0 for the Honor 6X

Site default logo image

The Honor 6X was one of a few phones announced back at CES, but first impressions weren’t all that great. The main sore spot with the device was the software. With stronger options available from the company, it was tough to recommend the 6X with the software it originally shipped with. However, that’s soon changing, as Honor is preparing a major update for the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 hands-on: a good tablet you’ll end up forgetting about [Gallery]

Site default logo image

We know that Android, as it is right now, is a formidable smartphone OS. However, when stretched up to tablet sizes that go beyond 7 inches, things don’t really scale up gracefully. With its just-announced Tab S3, Samsung is trying to break that infamous spell, but I am honestly not sure whether it’ll be able to succeed…

We’re still a month away from Samsung’s Galaxy S8 launch event, but we’ve already seen a myriad of leaks on both it and the bigger Galaxy S8+. Just about everything has been revealed ahead of the device’s official announcement, from full specs to a new AI assistant (dubbed Bixby) and even some short hands-on clips of both models.

Tonight’s leak comes courtesy of Evleaks and offers a detailed (presumably official) render of the Galaxy S8.

Google quietly launches ‘Meet by Google Hangouts,’ a new video conferencing app for business

Site default logo image

Google has today launched yet another communication app (via TechCrunch), this time for business. It’s called “Meet by Google Hangouts,” and it’s made for high-definition video calls between as many as 30 people. It seems Google may have pushed this live by accident, since its page on the G Suite website still isn’t up. Or perhaps they would just rather keep it quiet…
